I used to enjoy training simiar to a bodybuilder, using machines and cables mixed in with bodyweight and free weights but fell out of love with it after reading too many comments and watching too many people online talk about how it isn't "functional". Recently ive got back into it after a number of years experimenting with kettlebells and compound-only workouts (but never enjoying it). I must say, since returning to a more bodybuilder/PPL routine, im starting to fall back in love with it and do consider it functional plus there is less chance of injury as opposed to crossfit or powerlifting (in my opinion/experience anyway). I feel healthy, strong and fit, i add some cardio after each workout and make sure i stretch and im starting to feel like a new person, plus my physique looks better which is a bonus! The Bioneer is my favourite fitness channel but i also enjoy watching the videos of Jan Olejko, hes in his 70s and is in great shape, he can do dips, pull-ups and press-ups like a young man and bodybuilds everyday, there arent many sports out there where you can still do them daily in your 70s so if you train sensibly i think bodybuilding is very functional and healthy

The timing on this is grand. I just finished using LISS coupled with Qigong to encourage a state change, as I've been under a tremendous amount of stress which has been compromising my ability to live well. I need to work with and understand this process of transformation more deeply, and I appreciate the research terminology that will allow me to do so. Much gratitude for you & your channel. You've got the power!

I really like and practice knees over toes, but what always annoys me are people that write like "I did Knees over toes for one week and my 20 year long pains are gone". Like you said tendons unlike muscles take months to change, that's simply not how fast it works :D

I disagree with this. When people say don’t train every day they don’t usually mean you need to lay in bed and play video games all day on your rest days. My rest day is 30 minutes of light lifting and a 12 mile hike without weight, whereas I do 6-12 miles on training days carrying 30-50 pounds. I used to work harder and have no rest days, but it tanks my hormone production so it’s counterproductive.
@TheBioneer7 сағат бұрын
That sounds to me like you do agree… although I’d argue that’s in fact not a rest day at all!
@LowHangingFruitForest5 сағат бұрын
I just think that it can be dangerous to tell people it’s safe to ‘train’ every day. I would say take a rest day or two every week and focus on active recovery, but yes, it’s all in how you define ‘train’, ‘rest’, ‘recovery’, etc.

When I was at school running was a punishment. If you were an athletic child, you were picked up to do cross-country, but for everyone else, it was a horrible trial you had to do sometimes. We were never given any training. As I grew older it was hard not to see "runners" as essentially those grown-up athletic kids. Whenever I tried it, my lungs would feel on fire, my legs wanted to give up, and I just couldn't keep up the motivation to continue this punishment. Many of the people giving running advice didn't even acknowledge this difficulty (not a critique of your channel I haven't watched it all!), which reinforced the belief that they were naturally fit and I was somehow different. Anyway, this year I did the Couch to 5K programme. Now I run 5K three times a week, something unimaginable just months ago. I am happier, healthier, and feel an enormous sense of achievement. I really recommend it.

A flaw in this thinking- it could be the case that building more absolute muscle, tendon size and strength on the bench press variations may have more real world carry over than the standing cable press. This is what I believe and have experienced. Not that the standing cable press isn’t a great accessory to throw in for some of the reasons you mentioned A crude analogy is the wrestling coach that says don’t bench press because you are pinning yourself A good strategy may be driving as much adaptation as possible in the weight room and then honing specific strength in your chosen hobbies/ sports / jobs I love the deep stretch on the standing cable fly and thinks it’s wonderful for hypertrophy, end range resiliency, and, as you noted, it’s not bad at teaching us to segmentally isometrically contract for stability while only moving about the arms
@iolairmuinnmalachybromham31037 сағат бұрын
I think so. Bodybuilders often get dismissed as not training functional, but actually if you’re make an effort to train every major muscle in the body like they do you’re going to have a lot of versatile strength in all sorts of planes of motion. Then, like you say, training specific compound and precision movements for specific skills
@andojo47473 сағат бұрын
@@iolairmuinnmalachybromham3103 I agree with you, bodybuilders do seem to be accused of being "unfunctional" but in reality I believe it is great for longevity and stength/health plus there is less risk of injury as opposed to many crossfit or powerlifting exercises, im not knocking crossfit or powerlifting, I'm just making a point

The same strategies for autistic sensory overload work for non-autistic. Which is what you’re talking about like counting. Also there are great studies showing how viewing something as a challenge in stead of a threat is fantastic for stress regulation and performance.

Maybe bench press doesn't imitate the real world but it's superior for building muscle.
@TheBioneer10 сағат бұрын
I mean, not hugely! Like I said here, for pure hypertrophy this is far more isolated, more addiction of the pecs, better stretch… you can build massive pecs with this move. And in terms of muscle strength - bench will build all the pushing muscles but with no support. So, not really…

I've been inspired by this video as well as Bioneer's 'workouts spread across the day/3-4 mini workouts' content. When properly executed, one can definitely get some great stimulus in 10 Minutes. Whether to 'Grease the groove'/maintain or even gain as he describes. I.e 10 mins of 2-3 long sets of an exercise till failure or rower or burpees session. (Key being proper exertion during the 10 minutes).

The automated process is something I've found recently. I've been having flying lessons, and to encourage this the instructor just talks to you the whole time. He points out landmarks and then quizzes you on what he's said or asked and expects you to ask intelligent questions about what he's talking about. I found that when I was engaging with him, looking at the sights, and actively listening. I flew at the right altitude and speed but as soon as I started actively flying I kept going wrong. It was really interesting to see it working like that. And I just had a case of the worrier. I'm currently in hospital so I'm hooked up to a heart rate monitor and the nurse was talking to me about protein powder. She was having a reaction to whey, so I explained about the difference with isolate and that it's unlikely to trigger her slight lactose intolerance. Something I'm pretty confident about, but because I was so anxious about being wrong my HR jumped up to 120bpm. Great video as always 👍

You can also do this with Olympic ring, if any of you don’t have a cable machine. Don’t worry it is extremely challenging and you can change the intensity by height of the rings.
