Are You Obsessive Compulsive About SIN?

Do you find in your desire to honor God's ways that you've become obsessive compulsive about sin, identifying sin and trying to get rid of sin in your life? I get many emails and questions regarding sin that have intense obsessive distortions. It drives people to compulsively check for sin and find out what things are sin. Many who battle religious OCD/scrupulosity often find themselves having a fear-based, obsessive pattern in how they relate to the subject of sin. Today I want to bring out this battle and our need to move into grace.

Me too! I read a text while driving. I immediately felt convicted about doing it. I said Lord I'm sorry, this isn't safe, plus it's against the law. It seemed everything was ok. But now I feel condemnation. I just want to be allowed to make mistakes(sin) and if I say I'm sorry, receive forgiveness and grace. I want to be able to be human.

Even though I still struggle, I’ve grown so much in this area. I remember being fearful to leave my house, my room, watch tv or even talk to people due to mindset of sin. It was a bondage. My heart didn’t desire sin but I was always scared I was in it because it became my focus. One day several years ago I heard Mark speak on sin/spiritual ocd. Finally someone could relate to what I was going through. God was already opening my eyes to His righteousness and to focus on that. This teaching has been and continues to be a huge blessing and walk to freedom for me. I thank God for this.

Hey sis wassup, I know how you feel. I was able to find freedom from this. In Hebrews 10:1-14. In that chapter the writer was talking about the futility of the Old Covenant sacrificies for sin. Every time someone had to offer a bull or goat, it was just a reminder that they still had sin. However he said something interesting in verse 2, he said "that if the sacrifices were perfect, the worshippers once purified would have no more conciousness of sin" In other words they would no longer have to be worried about sin keeping them from God because they would have been made clean permanently. If only we had a perfect sacrifice to do this very thing😕............. Wait a minute we do! That's where Jesus comes in. Unlike the blood of bulls and goats which just cleared your sin debts before God for a time, Jesus' blood not only cleared our sin debt but His sacrifice gave us a new nature. Hebrews 10:14- For by one offering He has *perfected* those who are being sanctified. That means us😄. We no longer have to be sin concious because the sin was condemened in Jesus' body and when we got baptised we died with Him going into the water and rose with him when we came out as a new creature. God doesn't identify you with sin, He identifies you through the cross. He sees as a new creation. Sin is no longer imputed to you. So long as you believe on Jesus that you have been made clean, you are blameless, holy and upright in His sight. Please feel free to read the scriptures properly for yourself and pray on what I said. Let the Holy Spirit reveal this to you. Jesus' sacrifice was and is enough. We can live free from this perpetual guilt. God bless you.

Same. I'm really glad I found this channel. I was initially alarmed at how he didn't seem to focus on sin like I was used to with other Bible teachers/preachers. But it makes sense now; we must first begin to comprehend our relationship to God as one characterized by grace, not judgment, and by love, not indifference, and by joy and happiness in Christ, not obsession and fear over sin. And THAT will lead to holiness without the obsessiveness and fear and thinly-veiled self-loathing. God bless you, sir/ma'am. ❤

Hi I hope this helps. ❤ I know how hard it is. I had shared this earlier today. “You have to become a baby again. I know it sounds funny. But it’s true. I’m 40 years old. No job. Not married. I’m living at home. A broken home with parents who are broken in their hearts too. Today as most days as I can remember, I woke up and again paralyzed with the same pressure in my stomach I usually have. With the videos I’ve been watching from my brother Mark, learning what truly our Father’s Love is, I got up and I was just sitting, almost shaking. I just looked up and said, “Father I need to get up, I gotta go to work” (I do Instacart when I can) and my utility bill for water is past due and ready for shut off. But that’s another story. (Hint: stealing). While sitting on the side of my bed I’m reminding myself of how much My Heavenly Father Loves me. After a little while, I get one foot on the ground and then the other. Then I tell Father God what I have to do next. And slowly it starts getting easier. And right now I’m watching this video, same stomach pressure, but with JOY. I say this not looking for pity but to make a point. LOVE IS THE ONLY WAY AND THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN HEAL. And ITS OUR HEAVENLY FATHERS LOVE. I’ve stolen, been addicted to drugs, still under maintenance therapy, backslid for many many years. But My Heavenly Father still LOVES me! And His Love is saving my life. We can’t heal until we let it go. The guilt, the shame, and the fear, we have to give it all to Jesus! I was a huge perfectionist for most of what I can remember, but never knew until a few months back while watching one of brother Mark’s videos. And it was not easy accepting that lol. I’ve broken down into tears kneeling and praying for God to help me many times before in life. You won’t get anywhere, I guarantee it, until you look to yourself and admit you are broken in your heart. That’s when the Journey of Love Healing begins. And it’s only our Heavenly Father’s Love that heals. I’m still in the battle, but I pray that this message helps someone. You have to first learn how much you are loved by God Almighty. And He is Our Father. Thank you Jesus I love you. And you too my brother Mark. I can confidently tell someone now that I love them and not feel guilt or shame. We’re not perfect and never will be my brothers and sisters. But we’re learning. And we are sons and daughters of our Father in Heaven through Jesus our Lord. He loves YOU”

This man's ministry has shown me that even a Christian still can have wrong assumptions and, in extreme cases, a very debilitating mindset, regarding the Bible's doctrine. The pervasiveness of these obsessive behaviors, inside and outside of the non-denominational/Baptist circles (where I tend to be), also shows me something of the revolutionary nature of the Gospel. The grace and love of God is so amazing and so unbelievable to us that even we must fight the temptation to make it more "rigorous" and difficult. But God wants us to enter his rest instead. And that's amazing. 🥲 God bless you all, and God bless this ministry.

The part of you that obsesses about sin is the flesh. God doesn't identify us through sin but through the finish work of Jesus Christ. Roman 8: 9- But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. God does not impute sin to believers because He condemned sin in the flesh of Jesus Christ. Romans 4:8- Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin. Your sins are all forgiven in Christ guys. ❤

Thank you so much for these! I have a question I’ve never been able to ask out loud but OCD and mental health struggles have quite literally ruined my life, my relationship with my kids and left me in utter darkness and despair as a Christian. They were not there before I came back to God. 😢 I just wonder why God allows and does not take away such horrific mental anguish. I’ve cried out to God probably over hundreds and thousand of times to no avail. I was a loving fun fear free person before and I was not even living for God then a few years in *boom* it is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. It made me into a parent that I regret and wish I could’ve fully been the parent I was meant to be.

I am so sorry you go through this. Ok, I am so relieved at the same time to know I'm not the only one who has these feelings of feeling like joy has been robbed and I have all this fear as a Christian and we're not suppose to have fear, so then I feel awful for having all this fewr and obsession around things. Mine comes from seeing other Christians trying to add sins to the bible that I don't see there and then watching them constantly fight back and forth about all these grey areas in the bible and so everyone constantly bickers over their interpretations. And that is mainly where my obsessions come from is never knowing what is sin and what is not sometimes from listening to so many conflicting arguments between believers. Ugh. It's exhausting. Anyway, sorry for my long-winded comment. Just nice to know I am not alone seeing all these comments here.

Like drinking coffee, reading books etc. There are so many different opinions and convictions, that if someone else has a conviction I obsess if I should have it too or if God is giving me a sign. Romans 8:31-39 New Living Translation Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love 31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one-for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one-for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”[a]) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
