It's really hard to manage multiple Etsy shops and do freelance work with ADHD, autism, and severe social anxiety. Sometimes I'm too overwhelmed to respond to clients for days, sometimes I can't respond at all. I often "work" all day long without getting anything done, but also doing nothing fun like a hobby or relaxing. I work 24/7 from September to December (my main season on Etsy) and after that, I'm completely empty and burned out until summer, but then it starts all over again. I'm not medicated and don't want to, but I also don't know how to improve my situation. So many neurodivergent people struggle immensely and feel completely alone being self-employed, and I think we can use all the help we can get. So thanks a lot for talking about this!.

You might consider medication. I was diagnosed at 50 and medication has changed my life for the better. I still struggle with many things, but I’m able to have a few hours of the day to be very productive because it calms the chatter in my head. 😊

I hear this. I’m medicated now. A total game changer. But took 3 meds to get it right. But it is super lonely. Especially because most of the folks teaching us are not neurospicy. Some are amazing and empathize greatly. And help a ton. But most don’t understand that we feel like superheroes who can fly high, fast, and have laser vision, but we’re in the clouds flying in circles with all the radios in the world blasting in our heads. I wouldn’t trade my adhd for anything. But taming it is a challenge.

This is me all over. Being able to switch hyper focus on and off is the secret super power. I keep a playlist which I only play when I want to focus, once I get locked into it I can focus no matter what. I use music as the switch. Set a timer to have the music end after a few hours and I find I'm able to snap out of hyperfocus and avoid burnout. Keep this playlist for this purpose only, I find as soon as I hear it I start to focus.

LOL I've been found out! I'm "continuing education" by catching up on your vids, while simultaneously updating photos and infographics; all while I have a stack of orders to sew and office organizing to do. And I was just about to start making a list of ideas of how to prepare for the holiday season...until I heard the topic of this vid and starting laughing. I use different KZfaq music for different work activities (mostly brown noise or other colors, binuaral beats, etc). I'll ONLY use ABC sound for Activity A and only XYZ sound for Activity B, so on and so forth. It helps "train" the brain into certain "modes". The problem is CHANGING tasks from the hyper focus. Oooooph that one is difficult. I would be VERY interested in a video series, book, or the like on the subject!

I am pretty sure I have ADD, though never diagnosed. Even though I do procrastinate, it didn't really affect me with a full-time corporate job as I had specific deadlines to adhere to. Now that I am self-employed, I am extremely overwhelmed. It's hard to describe to others in my life. I think working with jewelry, that requires specific equipment and specific components, makes it almost impossible for me to complete a product idea. Trying to make jewelry, source products, product research, and then build a website is way too much for me. I have a lot of ideas but I have a hard time executing them. I spend a lot of time buying new tools and components, only to fail at follow-through. I've told myself no new anything until I use everything I have purchased this year. It's really frustrating and hard on my profit margin, lol.

Normally having deadlines set by someone else, gives you sufficient dopamine or a rush to get things done. It's like when a guest is coming over and you can clean your entire house in 40mins..... Otherwise you could easily drift around aimlessly for an entire week and do next to nothing. So when it's up to just you like in your business, I find it helps to compartmentalize all the tasks and set a time limit for each. You will get a dopomine hit when you complete those small things..... But it just takes some thought to keep yourself on task and keep you going. It also helps to love what you're doing..... A bit of that hyper focus directed into it can actually make you quite outstanding.

ADHD - Inattentive Type here. Creating new products and the dopamine rush associated is easy. Following through with making listings is a whole other thing. I absolutely hate doing photos because it is slow and repetitive. On the days that I have a lot to do - filling orders, putting up listings, responding to customers - I need to take my ADHD meds to get through the day or I would just sit there trying to start but unable to motivate. I don't take the meds everyday because there is a risk for me to become manic. I have tried to implement structure and some of it has stuck - pack in the morning, do layouts in the middle of the day, make orders after dinner. I suspect a lot of sellers on Etsy have ADHD because we have SO MANY creative ideas.

I'm a teacher with a small business AND ADHD. This isn't a criticism at all, as I love this video, but 'ADD' is an outdated term, and all the different types of ADHD now fall under the 'ADHD' title. I can definitely relate to what you are talking about. My biggest problem is moving from the creative process/making my products to photographing and listing them. I actually hate that part of the process and have so many (hundreds and hundreds) of finished products that are not listed because I'll do ANYTHING but list them! I'll then get stuck in ADHD paralysis mode and get overwhelmed by all the things I still need to do, and by all the tabs open in my head. I'm still working on navigating this better.

@@etsyconsultant So say you have a group of people who need to clean up their SEO on Etsy. If you had a 3 hour (or however long you think it takes) zoom session. You pop on and say “okay we’re going to look at our keywords, first we’re going to analyze what’s working for us. Here’s what we’ll be doing (explain what to do), now let’s answer questions for 5 mins.” You answer questions. Then say “I’m starting the timer for 15 minutes. Go do your analytics and we’ll come back and discuss. After the 15 minutes is up, you come back on and say “okay how did we do. Any questions?” Answer questions. Then “okay now we’re going to look at (whatever the next step would be).” Then repeat that for each phase. Us ADHD folks love analytics (or I do at least) but we get lost in it. And often don’t finish. You could have these working sessions for anything. Like validating an idea. Or getting a shop set up. Or quarterly maintenance. Or setting up your first listing. The key to success is that it’s live. Not pre-recorded. It would work well for neurotypicals as well, but highly beneficial for neurodivergent folks like myself. Hope that makes sense.

I think so. my daughter and grand children are all add spectrum and I guess thats me as well but at my age 57 no point in getting a diagnosis now as I am an expert. through experience. In general its great for my daughter and her business until she gets too many orders and gets overwhelmed. I bounch around from idea to idea which is good because I do dry lots of new items and I have unique ideas.

Hi Genevieve, it is a difficult condition to work with in ecommerce, as well as life in general. What would you like me to talk about in these videos?

File an appeal, if your store is permanently suspended, you will most likely not be able to get it back.

@@etsyconsultant anything to keep focus on tasks. Ultimately, I need to break my day into time chunks. So much for dyeing yarn, so much for photography, paperwork, updating listings. I think that's on me.

Let me start by saying a big THANK YOU for all of your wonderfully informative/helpful videos. I LOVE your direct, no b.s. approach! Also, I am SO glad you're going to talk more about this! I have ADD and am about to embark on a new journey selling vintage items on Etsy. I was doing really well, buzzing right along like the busy bee that I am -- buying great stuff, doing diligent research, coming up with pricing, taking nice photos, writing nice descriptions until I got to.... the DREADED SHIPPING! (insert sudden, loud dramatic music here!) AAAAARGH!!! TOO. MANY. DECISIONS/CHOICES. Here's where it gets complicated for ME. I live in S. Italy and plan on selling mainly to the N. American and U.K. markets... I have several REALLY COOL but also REALLY BREAKABLE items, as well as some heavy S@%t too... what to do, what to do... do I pre-package everything so that I know the PRECISE weight and dimensions (that way everything's ready to go when an order comes in)? But then, iit depends on where it's going and what if they order mutliple items? But wait, so what about the shipping costs I'd already calculated for each individual item... and what about those PESKY customs? This is where my brain goes into OVERLOAD and I drop everything. I haven't been able to move out of paralysis mode since. Any suggestions you might have would be EVER SO APPRECIATED regarding ADHD overwhelm/paralysis and ORGANIZATION in one of your next videos? Also, if you have any tips for international shipping FROM Italy? 🙏🙏🙏 Thanks in advance! Amy❤

Hi there thanks for your comment. We used to ship from a remote Greek island so I understand you, however It is not complicated. First of all as far as customs is concerned Etsy collects and remits sales tax to whichever State the items is being shipped to, on your behalf. We never encountered any issue with customers having to pay tax or duty. For high value items over $2500 they may be extra paperwork. The Poste Italiane should have a price list that you can download from their website. Use this is a guide, and estimate the price of the shipping, against the weigh of it. If you have a situation where you haven't charged enough for the shipping and you make a sale simply contact the customer and explain that the shipping is € x more, and you can create a custom link for them to pay the additional cost. Most customers are happy with this. As far as everything else goes, stay tuned for more content! Good luck
