Funeral Of Mahalia Jackson in Salem Baptist Church of Chicago 2 Feb. 1972
Mahalia Jackson (1911 - 1972) was an American gospel singer. Possessing a powerful contralto voice,[2] she was referred to as "The Queen of Gospel". She became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world and was heralded internationally as a singer and civil rights activist. She was described by entertainer Harry Belafonte as "the single most powerful black woman in the United States". She recorded about 30 albums (mostly for Columbia Records) during her career, and her 45 rpm records included a dozen "golds"-million-sellers.
"I sing God's music because it makes me feel free", Jackson once said about her choice of gospel, adding, "It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues.

Man!! This brings back sooooo many precious memories!! I was just a teenager, living in Chicago and me, my Aunt Rosie and my Aunt Maggie (Me and Rosie skipped school and Maggie skipped work) and the 3 of us headed to the Arie Crown Theater for Ms. Jackson's home going. What was so INCREDIBLE was that upon being ushered in for the service, we were actually moved into a VIP section of the seating along with people of prominence and I was blessed to have met Ms. Aretha that day as she made her way onto the stage. I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to have sat among the greatness of Ms. Franklin, and Mrs. King.

Life is really amazing when you look at things over time Here's a 29 year old Aretha performing at the funeral of Mahalia Jackson in January 1972. The closing rites to the life of one of her mentors. 46 years later, 2018, Aretha has now been laid to rest with Jennifer Hudson singing the same song to send her off. We are only here briefly, our time, like everybody's will come one day.

I was 7 in 1972, but I can still remember hearing Aretha on the airwaves down in Augusta Georgia more than any other female singer during that time. Yes she is a soul singer, but she sings gospel with more authenticity and feeling than most of these modern day gospel singers who sing gospel for a living. God bless Aretha!

Can't wait to get to heaven someday and see God's choir with Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Nina Simone, and many others whom have gone before us. When I die, I want Mahalia's song Troubles Of the World played.

The greatest voice of the 20th Century, you just can't find a voice like that, all others trail in her wake. When Aretha bellowed like in this clip, it is quite simply the most intense vocal sound ever recorded, a passionate cry, a desolate shout, right from her very Soul, all the way to the heavens and back again. The indisputable greatest, nobody comes close. No wonder Aretha literally knocked people over with her voice, the power was immense. Long live the undisputed Queen of Soul.

@@q.c.chieftain3085 I THINK you got that Backwards. Aretha came AFTER Mahalia. God rest both of their soles. No one could Match Mahalia Jackson. I dare you to listen to Mahalia Jackson singing How I got Over - the 6 minute 27 second Version. The Video is bad, very bad - just listen to her singing, she makes your skin crawl, hair raise on your head. And after listening, if you don't feel something Spiritual, then you are SPIRITUALLY Dead!

Thank you for helping me. I am glad that you did not give up...I understand now that God uses everything we go through to help us. I did not know God was such a prankster. He sure tricked me. I laugh now when I think about how scared I was and how much crying I did. I can only imagine Him laughing when we humans think we are in charge. 1. God and Jesus love all people, no matter the size or weight, no matter the color or complexion, no matter the handicap or handi-capable, no matter where they live or who they live with, no matter what job they do, no matter how much money they have or do not have , etc. 2. The one in charge is God... 3. You read and interpret the Bible yourself...Ask God to help you and ask people who know 4. Keep praying, teaching, reaching, singing, working, watching, etc 5. God loves diversity. Songs: Tasha Cobbs-----Confidence Bri-----I'll Be the One

Aretha singing at Mahalia's funeral was scandalous in 1972. There were a great deal of Gospel purists who felt she was not "worthy" to sing at Mahalia's funeral. She could sing gospel music, but she was a secular singer, worldly and not fit to sing at the funeral of the world's greatest gospel singer. Mahalia would not have agreed to her singing for sure. She was allowed to sing, primarily because there was no other gospel singer as famous as Mahalia and although Aretha had turned secular, she was the biggest artist at the time that could do Mahalia justice . Mahalia used to change Aretha diapers when she was a baby.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure you're right. Back in the day, if anyone grew up in the church the way Mahalia did, they just would rather only gospel artists sing at their funerals, probably. Some people are like that today. I know of some.
