I wonder if they will implement a belly missile launch system where they could have several missiles inside the cabin in a slanted position similar to a gun's mag clip so that the missiles could lower into place out of a hidden doorway that launches the missiles. Such a system would only take away around 6 inches of side room inside the cabin each side with the missiles slanted so it would take up about 6 feet wide from floor to ceiling of missiles perhaps up to 7 or 8 missiles each side of inside the cabin. A smaller 20mm Gatling multi barrel gun could be deployed from a pop out turret that has a 90 degree sideways sweep & 45 degree elevation sweep for targeting as well as a 20mm belt fed gun for a operator to use from the rear of the heliplane. These improvements would take the heliplane into a formidable attack class troupe carrier, cargo carrier being used on hotzones.

The Army belly ached a long time ago that it was prohibited from using fixed wing aircraft for offensive operations. This was the whine during the development of the Cheyenne helicopter. The solid rotor was one problem, the other problem was it had wings. Only the Air Force was suppose to have fixed wing offensive aircraft.
@tardis99053 жыл бұрын
The Army's belly aching and whining? Its the Air Force's demands that forcibly created and imposed that fixed wing policy. If they haven't done so already, should come as no surprise if the AF steps in and put a stop to this program.

@mikerogers46404 жыл бұрын
The Rotodyne is limited by advancing retreating blade to less than 200 mph.
@jebise11264 жыл бұрын
@@mikerogers4640 yes it was slow but that is not the limit at all for such craft. if main rotor is rotating much slower and wings take most of the lift 400km/h should not be a problem. after all mi24 has the max speed of 330km/h and with no pusher prop and wings.
@sqeric483 жыл бұрын
Theoretically....would there be a benefit if the blades of the rotors were able to telescope to a 50% reduction plus an additional fold out aileron to increase cruise speed and facilitate a traditional type airplane type landing in case an engine goes down?

A tilt rotor has to use the same blades for lift and for thrust. The twist of the blades has to be a compromise. If they are well designed for low speed lift, they are wrong for high speed flight. It is then difficult to get high speed flight and good efficiency. Bell have been working on tilt rotor design for sixty years. The army want to do better. Really?
@upcycleengineer78254 жыл бұрын
They are working with Bell, I think the biggest issue is they don’t want the prob that arose with the V-22
@chrissmith76694 жыл бұрын
The difference total twist is the same. The twist distribution is where there’s a difference. They can’t really produce a blade with the optimum twist for either. Blade design is a best fit that’s close enough. There are some ideas for blades that change twist with RPM thanks to the magic of composite layers and the 6x6 matrix.

It's kind of annoying seeing how Army acts as they are the ones figuring out the benefits of this platform when in fact because they bailed out from the initial program made it really harder to come to life. Had not been for USMC determination to have the tilt-rotor, they would have had empty talks today or bought the damn thing from Japan.

Why don't I see tilt roter aircraft that are armed and engaging target with it's firepower the military helicopters are armed and are force multipliers by destroying the enemy coming in and out of hot LZs every other aircraft that I have seen has weapons systems on board and can engage enemy coming in and out to give your troops the best way in and can keep enemies heads down until the crafts ammo runs out and then leaves after to rearm and pick up another load of troops

It's a power to weight ratio. Jet engines can't provide enough vertical lift that's why they need a runway. Plus the exhaust thrust on take-off and landing can cause some crazy ground affects.

Two big problems FOD issues and what caused most Harrier landing crash pot stalls where the hovering jet engine sucks in low lift super heated jet exhaust and loses up to 50% of its lifting trust

What I don't understand is why the Army needs to develop their own tilt rotor aircraft when there is so much data already from other successful aircraft like the V22 Osprey, AW609 and prototypes like the XV15 & XV-3. Its like they are trying to reinvent the wheel and it reminds me of another failure to use readily available and successful APC from the Marine Corps. They chose instead to spend billions on a completely new vehicle called the Stryker which also had less capability in every way. It seems the Army loves to spend taxpayers dollars simply because they can.

Incredibly loud. No where near the ability of the Raider / Defiant program. DOES NOT have turboprop speed. Needs much larger landing zones. There are some basic transport in noncombat area missions that this thing is suitable for, but do not buy off on the idea that this replaces helicopters.
@n3v3rforgott3n96 ай бұрын
"No where near the ability of the Raider / Defiant program" ... Except it is faster, flies further, has better acceleration and deceleration, carrier more people or a heavier load, and didn't have the multiple technical issues the Defiant had... Not to mention you are overstating the size of it as it can already fit in the vast majority of LZs the Black Hawk would use.
@brianmoore11646 ай бұрын
@@n3v3rforgott3n9 quite literally the only one you got right is flies further. Your words are obviously without knowledge.
@n3v3rforgott3n96 ай бұрын
@@brianmoore1164 My guy... public knowledge that was released show that the Defiant's max speed in testing was 247kts... that is 63 kts slower than the Valor. They have also released statements saying the valor beat the Defiant in time to altitude tests (acceleration) and time to stop from cruise speed (deceleration). Along with the Valor being able to carry 2 more troops and well over 1k lbs. You have your facts so totally off. The Valor also only has a 19% larger total footprint and can pit anywhere a Black Hawk can as long as it isn't restricted by the blades of the Black Hawk on all 4 sides. IE it is wider but also much shorter so turn it 90 degrees and it will fit. It has also been proven to fit in existing hangars made for the Black Hawk.
@brianmoore11646 ай бұрын
@n3v3rforgott3n9 Since its max speed was not a max speed at all and only a tested speed so far, everything you said after that must be ignored due to your obvious lack of knowledge.

@@brianmoore1164 HAHA Ok so the cruise speed was 33 KTs faster than the max speed the Defiant has shown. You are just a joke at this point. Everything I said is public knowledge and even Sikorsky hasn't disputed the numbers and facts given.
