#177: Twin brothers Ron and Arnie Koss talk about their experience founding Earth's Best Baby Foods in 1985 with the hopes of impacting real, positive change in the marketplace by inspiring Big Food to also meet the growing demand for organic baby food. They also pose lots of questions about the Real Organic Project to their Vermont peer and ROP co-director Dave Chapman, who was present throughout much of their Earth's Best journey.
In 1985, Ron and Arnie Koss founded Earth's Best Baby Foods, the first organic baby food widely available in grocery stores across the US. They are also the co-authors of "The Earth's Best Story: A Bittersweet Tale Of Twin Brothers Who Sparked An Organic Revolution." Today Ron is a founding member of Global Health Media and Arnie is active in food systems work.

The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince.
The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations).

We believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront.

2 other conversations I've had about soil/chemicals came with neighbors. 2 different neighbors asked about my garden...what I grow and if I used chemicals. They both told me they were avid label readers and had food sensitivities. They were well aware that healthy, chemical-free soil grows the best produce and meat. They both asked if I'd be willing to help them start their own gardens. Of course, I happily said yes! I pray they follow through.

I've had so many conversations about food/soil as of late. My nephew and his wife have 300 acres with her mom. He told me his soil is dead. They started cover cropping last year. He also started a company that puts down rock dust/minerals on farmland. He wants to get animals back into rotation on the land. He told me either they'll make it or lose the farm in 5-7 years. He talked about big farms/corporations who'd like to buy their land. He's very concerned about the future of small farmers and land management.

i love the comments about splitting hairs over till, no-till. this sums up what i think is a major impediment to a cohesive regenerative organic movement, divisiveness over practices. better to come around common values and put aside judgement. best to understand that there's more than one good way to skin a cat and achieve quality while upholding the greater mission.

Brother, thank you so much for pointing out the elephant in the room. I have not pursued real organic certification because I refused to fuck around with the USDA assholes. I’m sure there are many people like myself who feel that way.

I just bought 2 jars, for my cats. They liked it. So happy, I'm so tired of buying cat food and my cats lick the gravy and leave some solid something (not sure what it is but some kind of fake food they won't touch).

Hey, so if your certification is free, I would like to join you. But wouldn’t I first have to pay for USDA cert?

The problem with the word "organic", is the same problem as with the word natural. In both examples, the word is trying to describe what is "not", rather than describing what "is". In the original, the word natural, describes what is not. Natural means "not spiritual". As in; "We are not going to include anything spiritual, in this discussion." With the word organic, one encounters the same problem of what is not. Example; "We will not be using any man made chemicals in the growing process." The terms make a persons mind go two opposite directions at the same time. What people desire is clean, nutrient dense, made by God, food. But, that's a lot of words to describe the desire of the customers heart. Is there a word, in the English language, a single word, a single, marketable word, that describes what "is", without any connotations of what is also, not? The only word I can think of is Manna. However, even Manna has its linguistic problems. It indicates clean (as in, "not" chemically contaminated with man made chemicals of war.) It indicates nutrient dense, (as in, "not" insipid, tasteless, cardboard filler.) It indicates, made by God, (as in, "not" GMO). So, I am back to square one. Even with the Bible. I am open to suggestions. Your turn now.
