Cardiologist Says Oatmeal Bad
While oatmeal and oats are often touted as a wholesome breakfast option, it's crucial to recognize that they also come with their fair share of drawbacks.
Why Oats are Bad?
One of the primary drawbacks of oatmeal and oats is their high glycemic index (GI). Foods with a high GI can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, followed by a subsequent crash. This can lead to feelings of lethargy, making it challenging to maintain stable energy levels throughout the day.
Oatmeal and Phytic Acid.
Oats contain phytic acid, a naturally occurring compound found in grains, seeds, and legumes. Phytic acid can bind to minerals like iron, zinc, and calcium, inhibiting their absorption in the body. Consequently, relying heavily on oat-based meals may contribute to nutrient deficiencies over time, particularly if adequate measures are not taken to mitigate the effects of phytic acid through proper preparation techniques like soaking, sprouting, or fermenting.
Why You Should Think Twice About Eating Oatmeal
In addition to phytic acid, oats also contain other antinutrients, such as lectins and avenin. These compounds can interfere with digestive processes and potentially trigger gastrointestinal discomfort in sensitive individuals. Symptoms may include bloating, gas, cramping, and diarrhea, particularly for those with underlying digestive conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or leaky gut syndrome.
Oatmeal for Breakfast. Is Oatmeal Good for Breakfast?
While oats offer a decent nutritional profile, they are not a complete source of essential nutrients. Relying solely on oatmeal or oats as a breakfast staple may result in a limited variety of nutrients being consumed, potentially leading to micronutrient deficiencies over time

That’s true, but this video does give legitimate reasons as to why oatmeal isn’t beneficial. Also, if a food isn’t supplying ample nutrients then it really falls into the “junk” category. Definitely judge food for yourself, but any food that doesn’t supply the body with sufficient nutrients really is an automatic chop imo.

I have had 40g of organic oats every morning, don't add anything to them, followed by 2 boiled eggs for the last 45 years and I ain't changing now. This is yet more scaremongering by KZfaq influencers. I'm never hungry until lunchtime. I don't eat between meals. My total carbs for the day is usually no greater than 180g. 'You're probably not eating it plain'. How does he come to that conclusion?

Each to their own, for every Cardiologist who says oats are bad for you there's another one who will say they eat oats every single day for breakfast with a generous serving of oat milk, - Dr Caldwell Esselstyn is one who comes to mind. For myself I'm almost 70, eat oats daily, love them, I still work full time in a physically demanding job, I'm fit and take zero medications.

Next day I use my cuisinart waffle maker for 10 minutes. Afterwards I wait until it cools down for few minutes because it is mushy inside if hot. Tastes great with everything, I no longer make any bread. Even tastes better next day. Good luck, you will enjoy it!

Phytates’ Role in Preventing and Treating Cancer One of the most important beneficial functions of phytates is their anticancer activity, which inhibits the growth of cancer cells. They also improve immune functions by enhancing the natural killer cells that hunt down and dispose of cancer cells without affecting normal cells. They starve tumors by preventing new blood vessels that may feed tumors from forming and by cutting off existing supplies. Not only is cancer cell growth reduced, but cancer cells go back to acting like normal cells. Phytates’ Role in Osteoporosis Protection Recent studies have shown that phytates protect against osteoporosis. Studies concluded that women with the highest phytate levels had the lowest levels of bone loss in the spine and hips, similar to the outcomes of anti-osteoporosis drugs, but without the drugs’ side effects.

Well anyone who thinks osts are unhealthy obviously is NOT a qualified doctor. An excellent source of soft fibre, reduces cholesterol, and blood pressure. The questions you raise are concerned with manufacturers processing the oats to death, natural compounds which are removed by cooking, and that oats are PART of a breakfast, NOT the whole of the breakfast. The groups you identify... Well THAT'S what Darwin was talking about...

All of these points can be easily debunked: 1) Don't buy any "flavoured" oatmeal. Just plain oatmeal. 2) The same "experts" that are concerned about phytic acid in oatmeal are also heartily recommending you nuts: almonds, walnuts, brazilian, macadamia. Soaked or not, they're not any real problem except maybe for really messed up people from a metabolic standpoint. Antinutrients are present in many healthy vegetables (like leafy greens), but their real impact in the human body is insignificant. 3) "Is not as complete as other breakfast foods". It's the only food, other than eggs and quinoa that has all 9 essential amino acids. High in manganese, phosphorus, copper, B1, selenium, magnesium. 4) This point is right, you have to see what works for you. Some people have bloating, others do not. Also, keep in mind that 1 molecule of starch breaks down into hundreds of molecules of glucose. You need to burn this with intense exercise, or the excess sugar will convert in body fat. If you have a low intensity physical job (professor, programmer, or retired) oats is not a good idea. But if your energy demand is high or want to build muscle you can't get much better options. And don't mix in the same discussion all carbs like saying that pasta, bread, cereals (sugar bombs) are the same with oatmeal. Oatmeal actually have soluble fiber to slow down the blood sugar levels increase, unlike let's say pasta or rice. And they have lots more nutrient - my point no. 3 5) If your GI tract is sensitive to oats, then yes, oats may not be for you. But most people actually have a problem with gluten, just buy gluten free and organic (no pesticides). It is said that carb heavy meals make you fatigued. That is correct. But again oatmeal have more fiber per serving size than many other grains. So, it's gonna be harder to have a blood sugar crash. Also, you're not supposed to eat them anyway if you're sedentary. If you think you should have grains in a rounded diet (not my opinion) then oats and quinoa are clear winners. But if your stomach disagrees, then avoid them. It's as simple as that.
