Sometimes a shape is just too complex for the add ons that normally make panel lines easier. But all is not lost, while it is a bit of a longer process it is perfectly possible to make uniform panel lines!

Oh my gosh, thank you. I'd spent a while now trying to figure out how to make these kinds of panel lines. I tried making series of faces, shrinkwrapping them onto the mesh then solidifying them and boolean-cutting them out, and that had a load of issues, then I tried using a curve, shrinkwrapping it onto the mesh and lofting a square profile along the curve, before boolean cutting, and that still had issues... This looks like it'll work out fine though. Thanks for making this.

a little improvement 1.Face Out 2.Cutter Intersect Face (get only Face 3.Face Solidify with Offset 0 (get the real Line cutter 4.Object Difference Line Cutter thus the Panel Line will face to object face rather than face to viewport

though the width of panel line may change on curve surface boxcutter seems only samples at the start point need a better way to get same width panel line on curve surface

I don't know how it's possible, but you always seem to have this amazing ability to always upload the exact tutorial that I need, when I need it. I am noticing that with some more complex overlapping panel lines (like the airplane panel lines shown in another one of your videos), I am getting issues where the booleans will solve correctly in some orientations of the part, but if I rotate it, it totally freaks out. All the normals are right, and everything is parent correctly as far as I can tell, so I don't know why it does this. (why must you do this to me, Blender???)

That's frustrating. A quick one to check is that the boolean operation is set to "exact" and not "fast" as that can make a huge difference to the calculations Blender is able to make to get it to work

The mesh is so dense that you can almost get away with selecting faces and using extrude along normals (at least for the 'straight' lines). Nice to see that my amateur approach of using booleans to accomplish this on the type of situation is actually reasonable :) There's an interesting situation you have where the angle on the panel line that goes to the top doesn't follow the same relative distance to the front of the "vent". What's your recommendation for following arbitrary edges? So for instance if I wanted this panel line to follow the edge that isn't at "standard easy" angles (45, 30, 15, etc) at a set distance...

In that case I would just use that edge as something to make my cutter from. I'd copy the edge, extend it and then make a shape from that for the intersection boolean.

Boxcutter is basically unusable for me if I'm woking on a high poly model like a helmet or something. I have an M1 Macbook pro so my performance isn't an issue. I double checked that the add ons were up to date, and reinstalled them just to be certain. Yet whenever I try to start drawing my lines, it gets unbelievably slow, and then if I try to inset, Blender crashes completely. I have no idea why and it's so frustrating since I paid for these add ons.

That's really frustrating. I haven't got a Mac to compare but I heard that Blender does have some performance issues on Mac's as it was originally designed to be used on PC. I can't speak to how true that was but the videos here were all filmed on a 5 year old laptop at the time (while running the recording software) so the addon's should work. Sorry I can't be more help on this.

I appreciate your reply! It's so weird, everything else functions super smooth, it's only after I've extruded the cut through the model that things start crapping out. And only on dense meshes. I take it doing this panel line process is more of a final step thing after you've done all your subdivisions? Gonna keep trying, maybe I just did something wrong along the way@@ArtisansofVaul

@Luke101 Yeah. To be honest I don't use SubD a lot as I prefer more control but I would so it after yeah.

Is it possible to use Justpanels for more complex shapes like this or like guns and such? I've been playing with it and sometimes it works, sometimes it has issues.

The main issue I have found is with it trying to bevel everything. Turn the bevel size to 0 for everything and it works pretty reliably. You can change it to that in the defaults in the addon settings too so you don't have to do it each time

@@ArtisansofVaul Oh snap. Yea I'll change the defaults. I definately don't want bevels on majority of them anyway unless it's flat. Always got the tips my man

A problem I keep having is that Boxcutter's Inset causes Blender to lag a great deal, like to the point where I can't see what I'm doing. I have a powerful device so this should not be happening. Any ideas?
@ArtisansofVaul

I really don't. My laptop isn't hugely powerful and I don't have this unless I'm cutting something very complex
