Eteri Tutberidze is a coach of champions. Yulia Lipnitskaya, Evgenia Medvedeva, Alina Zagitova, Anna Shchberbakova, Alena Kostornaia and Alexandra Trusova have a legacy of unprecedented results in ladies figure skating. Team Tutberidze has earned countless medals on the junior and senior levels of the last decade. In this video, we look at the history, criticism, controversy and questions surrounding the skaters of Sambo 70.
Will Alena Kostornaia, Alexandra Trusova and Anna Shcherbakova dominate the next Olympic Games? Or are Kamila Valieva, Alena Kanysheva, Daria Usacheva and Maiia Khormykh being primed for 2022?
What about the full blade assist technique?
Will Alina Zagitova compete at Worlds this season?
Is Team Tutberidze revolutionizing the sport or killing the artistry of the ladies figure skating?

It’s just a sad cycle.. 1. Young star emerges with great technique (not really) and artistry for their age 2. Young star sweeps all the medals and awards available 3. Young star experiences injuries that affect their technique and slowly get worse 4. Another new star starts to get emerge 5. Young star cannot keep up anymore and leaves Eteri to relearn their technique/at worst leave the sport completely 6. The new young star replaces the old one It never stops

The human body is formed before the age of 25, so Eteri does it right when working with girls under 17, it causes minimal damage to the body. Professional sports are generally very harmful, especially after the age of 17. No, if a women's sport is dominated by children who are able to spin faster because they have not developed into women then it isn't a women's sport. Eteri has capitalized on the number of underage children being introduced to figure skating in Russia and then exporting them into ruining their bodies by performing risky components that are not possible for grown women and as a risult shouldnt be over utilized by growing girls. 🤪

as much as i admire team tutberidze, this is a situation that allows abusive practices to thrive. i agree that eteri believes individualized training for adults is too time consuming, but it's also in her best interest to keep only young skaters and win with young skaters, because when you're 10, 11, 12, you don't know any better than what's told to you -- evgenia medvedeva speaking out because she is an adult with opinions was probably the single greatest risk to eteri's coaching system and power...

Who's abusing who. Girls get not only medals but huge following, own businesses, industry contracts waiting for them. And all that before college. That's an opportunity of a lifetime and they compete for her. The reality is there is only one Turberidze and her talent is to build champions. It doesn't help for us to tell her what she should be doing instead. In business and psychology, there are people like Steven Jobs who create ideas and start things leaving them for others to complete what they started. Called visionaries and business builders, not operators. Turberidze is this type. She focuses on the method she created which raises the bar for the whole sport and shows others how to use it. Girls get to the top and want to stay on it, it's understandable. But there is not enough of her for all of them. Other coaches are trying to cooperate but not very successfully so far. I think the problem is rather that this extraordinary supply is too short for the demand, not the other way round. Maybe she needs to train some coaches that can follow up

The issue is that Tutberidze's skaters are not consistent long-term. They typically have one or two good seasons and then they disappear and are replaced by another lady. They typically disappear and experience a downfall due to growth spurts. I understand that they are phenomenal skaters, but what good is it if they don't last longer than 1 or 2 seasons?

On the 3-3-3, i think the main reason why Evgenia was doing it was Eteri trying to push ISU to make that combo valid rather than intimidating other skaters (even though that's a tactic all top athletes do in some way). In the second half of the season Evgenia even started doing it in competition even though the added triple was worth nothing. They stopped doing 3-3-3 when RusFed told them to stop .

She’s going to keep Zagitova around as long as possible simply because of all the scrutiny she’s under now. She will want to “prove” that her skaters can remain competitive after age 17, that she doesn’t push them out, that Medvedeva could’ve stayed and continued if she wanted to, etc. She knows the current perception has the ability to impact her brand at some point no matter how successful her skaters are, as it will eventually cause some potential talent (and their parents) to consider whether other training environments afford them more opportunity of remaining viable over the longer term...

There is no simple answer to Tiberidze’s coaching. I remember she said during an interview that girls could do difficult jumps earlier than boys and the best time was before girls’ puberty. And she was right and proved her findings. Her students all staged their highest capabilities before their puberties and then yes big collapses followed. I don’t think ISU should ban the quad jumps from girls, instead I think the change on age limit is a good direction. Finally, an introduction on slow-motion replay analysis from today’s technoloby can help judges fine-tuning their marks on more and more sophisticated jumps and moves performed by skaters. The human eyes and perceptions already proved their insufficience when trying to judge a pre-rotation. The result is common negligence on pre-rotation.
@moonlightstripess
@moonlightstripess 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's because (and correct me if im wrong) majority of the men learn the jumps in sequence. In my opinion learning jumps especially the notorious quads shouldn't jumpstarted right away. It is the technique of how to maintain those quads that a skater should first learn. Because afterall it is the legs you need to lift you off but the arms for fast rotation. What most people have observed is that if you start young your body starts using the arms for liftoff, which then makes it difficult to retain the jumps as puberty sets in. I just wish they try to change their technique now so that they don't suffer that much difficulty in the transition period.

After Tonya and Midori, there was a loooong period before Mao brought the triple axel back. Michelle Kwan had to be pushed to do a triple-triple combo. Now a triple- triple combo is not enough. Eteri is taking risks. Whether they are good ones, who knows, but it is pushing the sport further. My favorite of the bunch this year is the 16 year old who won in the French Grand Prix assignment. Eteri's coaching methods maybe are not the best or the most desired, but what i admire in her is her capability to recognise talent. Both Zagitova ana Kostornaya were dumbed by their previous coaches. Eteri on the contrary, gave them the opportunity. And now Zagitova is an Olympic Champion and Kostornaya is a pleasure to watch (maybe l am a bit biased because Alena is my favourite figure skater).

The pattern that emerges here is that it's all about the First Senior Season. There's a big build up through social media, a buzz created through the IG clips of the power jumps and the wave of this expectation is surfed successfully through the debut senior season; what happens after that is what happens after that. This season's current wave is huge and it's very exciting, but we already hear about Kanysheva and Valieva (4T at 13?!!) rising through juniors to form the next wave. And on it will go I suppose. If TT have done nothing else, it has made juniors more interesting!

Thanks Dave for this very informative video! Since I haven't been paying attention to skating for years, I can't really compare past skaters the way you can but I love learning!. I confess I really love Evgenia, at her best she puts so much emotion and artistry in her skating and when her jumps are on she's a delight to watch. I hate that Alina is considered "old" at 17 years, she too has a special place in my heart.I think they should both just skate for themselves and not worry about medals since they both have many to be proud of! Eteri fascinates me-either she is a hard-core coach who pushes these young girls too hard and burns them out or she's the most brilliant coach of all with young girls so eager to learn and push limits because they enjoy her coaching. I'm so looking forward to what these new skaters can bring to this season and beyond.

Excellent expose Dave, more of this, please. I think Eteri has revolutionalized the sport for ladies. It will never be the same again. I appreciate that she pushed the sport technically. The moral debate of pushing young female bodies this hard, the risk for injury, eating disorders, lack of developing skating skills and etc should be considered when speaking about her program. However, other sports put tremendous amounts of physical stress on their participant's bodies too. Some of these methods or moral dilemmas are born out of cultural beliefs of what childhood should represent. I think it should be a happy medium of establishing good techniques in basic skating skills, spins, and jumps. However, pushing young, pliable bodies to do these that will be much harder to learn as they age. I think Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva won't make it to the European and World championships. I see a clean sweep of Eteri skaters at Russian Nationals, Europeans and at least two skaters on the World podium. I see Alena Kostornaia and Alexandra Trusova skating for several years. Alena Kostornaia I see having a career that extends past 2022 Olympics.

Dave, fantastic video! I think no one can deny that Eteri is a champion maker, by any means necessary. Whether or not she is a great coach is up for debate for sure and there will be many opinions. My personal opinion is that I can't call someone a great coach when they allow or encourage a wrong technique to their skaters, one that will not sustain over time. At the same time one has to acknowledge that her school is pushing the envelope in moving forward with the technical content to the programs of her students. So there we have it!

I predict at least one of the 3A will sadly be injured and won't be at worlds (her junior skaters seem to be getting more and more injured now that many are doing quads and triple axels. I imagine the same for her seniors), but I can see a sweep at GPF. I think the factory approach is killing ladies skating and I hope they raise the age to 17/18. The only skater I see making it to the Olympics from her current seniors is Kostornaya because she's a complete package, I don't think Anna or Trusova will be able to hang on that long since they require a 38kg weight to rotate, especially Trusova because she only has jumps and nothing else. Alina seems happy to just skate for fun and because Eteri has so many other stars she can skate stress free, I wouldn't be surprised to see her stay in the game another season with all her endorsements and shows, but very doubtful she cares to go until 2022.

@mish098aimer Yes, but you forget something very important. The inner competition. Yuna Kim and Caroline Kostner didn't have a serious competitor from their country. Russian female figure skating in our days, is like female figure skating in USA in 90s. The younger "grabs" the gold medal from the older. I don't say that is fair but it is a reality.

@mish098aimer It depends, on the age limit. It will be 16, 17, 18 or 20 years of age; 16 will be fine by me. By raising the age limit a lot you exclude a large amount of capable, both artistically and technically, figure skaters. Also a lot of young figure skaters will abandon the sport in order to do something else. Don't forget that Caroline Kostner was 15 years old in her first European Championship. If it was forbidden to her at that time to participate, i think she wouldn't have been the athlete that we all know.

Team Tutberidze has definitely energised ladies figure skating from a relative sleepy sport. And because of her, junior skating has achieved a level of interests as that for the seniors and ladies are scoring higher than the men at times. However all this comes at a price to figure skating's integrity and the sanctity of proper technique. Extreme pre-rotations, full blade assists and dubious edge take-offs are now the norm, redefining the very structural integrity of the sport. It is as if many of the jumps have now morphed into something else. Not to mention crammed programs and the arms-in-the-air(tano) position that mar a program's aesthetic appeal when abused. Sometimes less is more! Also, her skaters have cleverly masked poor skating skills that become more evident as they mature. I know she has achieved fame and success for many of her charges, but many eventually suffer some sort of disillusionment. Her methods are abusive to not just the sport but also the young athletes, both physically and mentally. ISU should raise the minimum age for seniors so that young athletes are not trained to last one season or 2 and then discarded.

I feel sorry for all these little Russian girls who are starved, over trained (reportedly 12 hours a day!) and often done with skating by the time they're 18 whether due to injuries, loss of jumping ability, emotional issues, or most likely a combination of all 3

I wish there is age limit to senior championship and grand prix event of more than 18yr, so the team could think more about preserving the physique of the athelets longer. It's uncomfortable to see so many young athlets quit due to injuries.

I really wish Eteri would teach them proper jumping techniques so that they could have longer careers. I'm hoping with the age increase that she will realize that she must do this so that she can have students that sustain themselves until 17 and 18

It’s interesting to see this article after the news broke about the failed drug tests at the 2022 Olympics. I can’t help but wonder how the usage of these methods may contribute to the lack of longevity in the physical capabilities of these athletes especially when given while they are still developing/growing into adulthood. I find it to be a very sad and tragic waste of effort and talent in the long term, simply for a series of momentary short term wins. It’s bordering abuse of these children

Only one girl tested positive for doping, and it wasn't for real performance enhancing drugs like anabolic steroids. How can you say that the training methods they use is child abuse? Any great achievement in life requires some kind of sacrifice.

Everyone talks about Eteri "pushing the sport forward" but the thing with ice skating, is that its only part sport. So much of it, for so many fans, isn't about the technical at all. To see amazing flips and jumps -- watch gymnastics. The combination of both is what makes ice skating so special... and Eteri pushing the sports part, to the detriment of the artistry part, feels like a step back. It isn't all her fault though and the ISU gets a huge big thumbs down from me for making rules and not following through on them... the cheating judges don't help either...Honestly, the past few years I have focused more of my time and enjoyment on pairs skating...the ladies single skating is just too depressing.

Looking at the scores so far, it is possible and perhaps likely that Kihira will prevent a Russian sweep at GPF. Also, and this is of course speculation, but I don't think the trend of skaters retiring or leaving the group at such a young age will continue in the same way into the future. Skaters like Valieva, Akatieva, Zhilina, etc. may slowly join the top skaters, but not overtake or displace them. Even mathematically speaking, it is not very likely that some newcomer will beat the current top skaters the way that they beat the former top skaters. And I don't think that skaters like the 3A or Rika will have problems with body growth such as skaters in the past have had. I think in a few years we will rather have a ladies' field in which, say, the top ten skaters are all very close to each other. It will be ridiculously exciting. 😁 Ps. I disagree with what you say about the full blade assist technique. Yes, their blades are pretty shallow and almost fully on the ice. But that's the keyword here, almost, not fully. They're still technically using their toepick. Especially if the skater is on a lean you cannot but conclude they are on their toepick, as being on full blade would simply make them slip. That's just physics.

It then no longer is a pick assisted jump. The jump is then much closer to a loop than a lutz or flip.

@@comment6864 oh right. Yes, I agree with that reasoning. Physics says that you can't prerotate a counter-rotated lutz jump, so if you're prerotating 180 degrees, you have a problem.
