As a spanish guy, yeah, Caganers are a thing. Not a modern one, either, they have existed for centuries. But they are usually super cheap, and people collect them. You just went to a turist trap shop, so, yeah, of course they were expensive. :p My grandmother had hundreds of those, of different quality, stored in a couple shoe boxes, and at christmas she always wanted to place all of them in the "nativity scene" (or Nacimiento, as we call it), and the rest of the adults of the family always tried to convince her that it was not appropiate, while all the kids tried to go to her house to help her. The joys of being a kid in Christmas. :p
