**This is a REPOST from our Podcast Channel** (It is finals week for Taylor and me.... So we decided to repost this video here since we are swamped with writing papers and taking tests! We love you!!! Blessings, Ashley)
Today I’m here with my newly engaged daughter, Ashley and I’m going to be sharing marriage tips. I love that we are doing this 8 months before the wedding so that you can pray about these and plan ahead. After being married for 31 years, I want to be clear that there are no perfect marriages, but God will use this relationship that you have with Johnny as part of your sanctification process. As you navigate each day of marriage, my prayer for each of you is that you will allow the Holy Spirit to guide and direct your relationship and you will experience the fruit of the spirit individually and together as a couple. Galatians 5:24 says: When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, it will produce this kind of fruit in us: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, Faithfulness and Self Control. So, let’s dive into each of these tips. I’m also excited to hear about how you are doing many of these things already.

My advise: when a disagreement is getting a little heated, always take each other by both hands and continue holding hands while the topic is being discussed. Its REALLY HARD to argue a heated argument while holding hands with the one you love. ❤ (advice from my premarital counselor 💍) Happy Wedding Planning, Ash! Great video, you two!!

I lost my Mother in 2006 and I am the first christian in my entire biological family so I sometimes just need a "Christian Mom" (and "Christian Dad" too) to help me unlearn and relearn things the right way as a new Christian. Thank you for sharing your Mentor Mama with us!

I felt so touched watching this! My parents would fight a lot but hearing you say that you always wondered what it even looked like to disrespect one another... made me emotional. I am just learning how to break free of those bad patterns. You have such a great mom and she is teaching you key qualities to have in marriage and in life! So happy for you all. Bless your family.

I love this too! I would like to add a few things. One, if your spouse is an introvert and maybe you are not, please be understanding. My hubby is very much an extrovert and I am not. He loves to go, go, go! While I get worn out easily. It took him a while to understand that sometimes I needed a break and need some alone time to decompress. The other is this: remember love is a choice, not a feeling. Things will come up in marriage that can be unpleasant and you can't always rely on your feelings. 1 Corinthians 13 requires lots of effort.

Hi Ashley, I saw my younger self in you when you showed sadness regarding the comment that you don’t always take others’ advice. Advice means that it is only something we consider. It does not mean we must take the advice. The fact that you do sometimes take advice shows you are an open and teachable person. Taking or rejecting advice does not mean we are loving or not loving. We can love and respect someone deeply and still not take their advice. 💕

Today as I was meditating, the Holy Spirit revealed to me how the enemy invaded the good that God had created for us and even went ahead to hide/blinden us from the truth that God is indeed good and that there can actually be Goodness in us and we can live in God's goodness. Thank you, Mentor Mama, Ashley and Taylor for standing up and being found as vessels at such a time as this to share, enlighten, and teach us that we can truly find God's love, happiness, and goodness, even in our generation. Much love from Nairobi Kenya❣

Respect is even when you have a strong and better opinion, accept his calmly. Then afterwards use sweets words to say yours, you'll be surprised, he'll take your opinion because he feels you've respected and shown him love.

Marriage is a wonderful thing. I’ve been married for a year and a half. Advice I would give to always make time for each other. Like make time to go on a date once a month or a couple times every other month. It has made my husband and I stronger in our love for each other.

Beautiful advice. May I add we, as women, also need respect. Love and respect go together and I think all humans thrive in those conditions. It’s okay to be strong in our opinions and be part of the decision process, as long as we are both listening and hearing. :)

Awe this is so sweet. I love it. In the same spot with my two older girls. Hoping and praying the scriptures is true when it says to teach your children the way to go and when they are older they will not stray. I also came from a split home like your mamma. This was beautiful.

Hi girls! Blessings from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic! I really loved this video because I'm happy that you got engaged with a Godly man who loves Him more than you do which it's awesome. My advice for both of you (you and Johnny) is that you can make good decisions about your new life and discuss it in a good way. I'm 40 years old and still single but I want to get to know a Godly man who I date with. Please pray for me that God helps me to choose well and gives me strength in my relatioship with God.

A tip: Make even a short prayer 2gether (or if he/she does not want, individually). 1. You will find out how difficult it is to pray when you argue and 2. when you choose to go against that feeling of resistance, God will soften your heart through prayer and the issue will look different, smaller. It will cool down your feelings a bit and give you a more compasionate and rational approach. 🙏🏻

I just love you ladies. Your videos helped me reach out to know the word. I have never been so happy about a wedding for someone I have never met before lol 😂. But I am so happy for you. I have been married for 22 years. We have travelled the world together and have been through multiple job changes and cities together and that has been fun and challenging but it was the hard things like the birth of our son who was severely disabled that challenged our love and dedication to one another the most. The good times make great memories and they are important but it is the holding of each other up when we have fallen on our knees and the pain seems unbearable that we were truly tested. And when you come out of those challenging times your marriage will be stronger for it. That to me is what makes a marriage a life.

This is wonderful insight from mom, and it is terrific that you're learning and hearing from mom what to expect. It is also helpful that you have mom, and family and girlfriends and most importantly the Holy Spirit and yes Johnny and ofcourse youtube. I do however strongly encourage marriage counseling with your pastors and after you get married it is pivotal to get monthly maintenance check ups, just as we do with vehicles where you get the oil checked and see what other maintenance is needed as well. Learn together your strengths and weaknesses and what your roles are from the giddy up. Who does the books? Who cooks? Cleans? Play time? Who initiate sex? When? Where...etc? Triggers are different for everyone. I agree with mom to have weekly dates and pray together and separately. Knowing each others boundaries, likes and dislikes. Johnny being the man and I don't know his history nor how he was raised, when you marry your knight, will he want to lead and if so how does that look. That's a conversation to have and learn together. When you get into arguments, what will that look like...I will say here for the both of you to watch the words you speak to each other and when your children come along. Words carry great power and what you say is what you will have. [Heavenly Father, bridle your son and daughter's tongues now as they embark on a purposeful journey of love and honor that will covenant them together with you, in Jesus name, AMEN.] Compliment and speak life to each other, especially when anger is present and know when to say I am sorry and I love you intentionally as many times as you like. What will yalls ministry look like? How do you communicate when there's a conflict? My wife is amazing when it comes to conflicts and over time learned to give me time. What are our values regarding raising children? ...

My advice is get a good marriage book specifically addressed to wives. My favorite is "Created to be his Help Meet". It's maybe a little controversial and there are things I wouldn't necessarily say that way myself, but I've found it's really good for pointing out my own character issues that I need to work on to work on our marriage. It's big on reminding us wives that we're meant to be helpers and supporters, not critics. Stuff like that. I read it before marriage and re-reading it again now (married almost a year), I'm still discovering bad habits and negative attitudes to break, bring before God and replace with better ones.
