Y’all need to rewatch this video again. The little boy is Richard Marx’s character. In the flashback, his father leaves him and his mother for another woman. As a child, he blames his mother for the father leaving. It goes horribly wrong when his mom begins to carry on with other men. He’s so angry and resentful that he burns their house fleeing leaving his mother and her lover to burn & die inside. The part when he mentions “first time someone looked beyond the rumors and the lies; and saw the man inside” is him talking about himself. Because of what he did as a child, that tragedy continues to follow and haunt him through his life in that small little town of Hazard. As an adult, he meets Mary who doesn’t care about his past. For the first time, someone cares about him and he becomes vulnerable to her. So, he and Mary end up having a sexual relationship. But, Mary begins to sleep around which doesn’t sit too well with Richard Marx’s character. It’s a reminder of how his mother used to carry on with other men. The sheriff who was played by the amazing Robert Conrad is stalking Mary. As you know, small towns talk and word gets around about someone’s reputation as in the case of Richard’s character. The same is true for Mary. The sheriff is desperately stalking Mary and is monitoring everything she is doing. In one scene, the sheriff is seen watching them both. You’ll see the sheriff taking pictures of the couple by the river and follows Mary with his squad car. But you can see by her reaction, she rejects the sheriff. This really angers the sheriff. As it would appear, Richard’s character is walking one night and catches Mary with another guy. She sees Richard and is visibly upset because she was caught. Richard doesn’t confront her but instead runs off and leaves. However, Richard is unaware he has accidentally left his scarf as it gets tangled and caught by the branches of a bush. And the person who sees all of this is the sheriff. The sheriff is so filled with resentment and outrage because Mary refused his advances that he plots this whole event to kill Mary and frame Richard Marx for her murder. There’s a scene where Mary is alone by the river after being caught by Richard where she is startled by someone coming up behind her. She turns around with guilty tears in her eyes for hurting Richard she isn’t prepared for what’s about to happen next. It’s pretty obvious the sheriff used Richard’s scarf to strangle Mary and then dump her body into the river. The townspeople get wind of this and go burn his trailer down. As you see at the end of the video, Richard cuts his hair and decides to leave Hazard behind in hopes of starting a new life. This is one of my fave songs by Richard Marx. And when I saw the video, I loved it even more. There is a part 2 of this video (same song) but with new scenes which really points the finger at the sheriff. These updated scenes reveal the sheriff’s obsession with Mary. At then end of this video though she says, “everyone says I should be afraid of you, but I’m not”. She’s saying this to Richard Marx’s character in spite of the things she has heard about him. In the other video, Richard’s lawyer declares Mary’s death as a suicide.

The haunting music that slow walked this story fueled the spooky mystery of what happened to Mary in Hazard, Nebraska, kept this video in heavy rotation during its run on MTV back in the early 9o's. Richard Marx is an excellent musician and songwriter. He has worked several high-profile artists over the years, like Luther Vandross, while also maintaining his own success. His first hit, DON'T MEAN NOTHING, is worth a listen. Another song, KEEP COMING BACK, has a bluesy, forlorn heartbreak that will grab you. Asia, I think you will love the quality and music of this song. BJ will get the message. My point is that both of you will like it. Enjoy

This song is a crackerjack mystery. The video implies a lot of things that aren’t mentioned in the song, but Richard Marx has never said if ‘he’ killed her or not. He’s kept the mystery alive and that makes the song even better - and more haunting.

He has penned many hits for Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Luther Vandross, Lara Fabian, Sarah Brightman, Barbra Streisand, Vince Gill, 98 Degrees, *NSYNC, Natalie Cole, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton, Kenny Loggins, Paulina Rubio, Sister Hazel, Keith Urban, LeAnn Rimes, Travis Tritt, Daughtry, Lifehouse, Hinder, Jennifer Nettles, Toni Braxton, and many more. Richard made his money first by being a singer, then he gave up singing, by writing songs for other artists and bands. He did go on tour back in '90-91. He was busy around that time touring and giving us some great music. He's a legend. "Angelia" "Endless Summer Nights" "Should've Known Better" "Now And Forever" "Hold Onto The Night" "Don't Mean Nothing" "Satisfied" "This I Promise You" are some other good ones from him. The Sheriff did it, then someone shot him and made a song about it lol, but the person didn't shoot the deputy.

I've had a sweet spot for stories about widows and orphans since I was 9yo and read the story of Don Quixote the protector of widows and orphans. So when I first heard on the radio "My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven (widow and orphan) Even then the folks in town said with prejudiced eyes That boy's not right" I was hooked and had to hear the story. Later I saw the video on MTV but it was just Holywood trivia for me. I had read so many mangas and saw so many animes featuring how strong the prejudices against widows and orphans are in our societies, this video has totaly missed the mark.

When he was kid his Dad left him and his Mother so he burned his own house down which made the people in town think he was weird and dangerous. Then the cop rapes and kills Mary and tries to frame him. While he’s in custody the townspeople who are outraged burn his trailer down. When Mary says “Everyone says I should be afraid of you but I’m not” she’s talking to the cop, leaning down to his car window.
