Our buddy Jim Hessler from the Battle of Gewttysburg Podcast joins us again. This time, it's to talk about a part of the battle that fascinates as much as it confuses many students of the battle. We are talking about Longstreet's Countermarch, of course.

Always appreciate Jim's knowledge and story telling, I always learn a little bit more I didn't know from him. I would like to correct him on one thing though.....The Walton's was a Thursday night at 8:00 show on NBC (we were all in front of the console tv each week). Lou Grant was a different night on CBS, so we would not have been able to watch one after the other. These things are always important to keep straight. Great job Matt!!

Hahaha those shows were in reruns when I was a kid, so I don’t recall the first run schedule. However, I do remember having to decide which show to watch. It was agonizing at times.

Lewis, I will defer to your expertise on the Waltons and Lou Grant time slots. I was more into 'SWAT' and 'Starsky & Hutch' type of programming back in that era. But I will lay credit for AG's first ever "Lou Grant" reference, as the younger listeners scramble to Google to figure out which brigade he commanded.

Ha! Both ABC shows by the way! If there’s ever a podcast about 70’s tv I think I’d make a great guest because I have too much useless knowledge of that topic. That Gran Torino they drove was a classic! I actually preferred Kojak (NBC) and Hawaii Five-O (cbs). Now back to the battle and that pesky counter march….

Another fantastic episode. Keep em coming! The armchair general that I pretend to be, combined with the advantage of 20/20 hindsight, I just keep returning to the conclusion that Lee should never have fought here after failing to get the high ground on the 1st. After all is said and done, he set his army up for a slow-drip reverse- Fredericksburg on the 2nd and 3rd.

Big round top was covered in trees wasn't it? If so, how could he see hardly anything?

It was but there were probably clearings. At points. Vegetation coverage chances over time. Like now, there is a big gap in the trees right at the top of BRT from a tornado last year.

I think the defeat was Lee's poor strategy and it started with him comitting to battle at Gettysburg instead of his first choice which could've won the war but being just a few years from his death and after years of campaigning took iy's toll and he was in bad physical condition so short tempered due to chronic pain etc and to have Longstreet rebuffed was not a normal response from Lee and Longstreet didn't get his way so Lee decided to do as it was several points it could've been victory but the charge into the center was folly and almost criminal as Lee's emotional staus along with sickness/pain he should have deferred to Longstreets plan..and Im no fan of Longstreet and feel if he had not wasted hours getting in position their fate was sealed....

Too much talking about talking about what may or may not have been talked about what and why to talk about. Better to get straight to business separate events from commentary and commentary on commentary.

@@addressinggettysburg Geez, whatever happened to "inclusion"!? I accept that I don't qualify for this elite group; I was trying to learn rather than glory in my superior knowledge. But it is always a good idea to complete one thought at a time in some organized sequence, even among the Elect.
