If you are really on a budget, tell your friends. And go to a restaurant with lower prices, or cook for them at your place.

I can relate to this lady, and I'm a guy. Every time with a group, guys or girls etc...either the bill is split OR I pay for it all. Despite my meal is always the cheapest. The sad part, I lost so many friends cause of this greed, but....I'm not paying for anyone's meal anymore so.....YAY :)

I thought everyone just automatically ask for separate checks at a restaurant. Guess I'll stick with people in my circle. We get separate checks, and if the restaurant don't split checks, you better look at the menu, round the prices to the nearest dollar, and pay for what you ordered. I'm not paying for anything I didn't order, unless I volunteer to.

Why is she just being honest with her friends??. Steve, she can't do all those things cause she's on a budget. True thing is her friends aren't real friends, they are just inconsiderate!! you sit on a table and y'all order champagne and one person orders water, as a friend it should tell you something. Everyone should have paid for their own meal in that situation and not order things that are extra in front of someone who can't afford it, and rub it in her face and on top of that be unfair towards her by wanting to split the bill. I think they could still enjoy a nice meal at a nice restaurant, if they were just fair&reasonable and not be extra

I had that happen when I went out with some coworkers, it wasn’t a fancy place with champagne and all that,, but I knew my budget and they were spending way more than me, then were upset that I wanted separate checks. I’m not splitting the cost of people’s fancy desserts and glass of wine when I just had a plain slice of cake and I had soda instead of wine. They weren’t happy but too bad

Who splits the bill if their not ordering together?? My friends and I only split the bill if we have ordered something together like a huge pizza or something, but if everyone is ordering separate things then guess what?! YOU ARE PAYING FOR YOUR OWN DAMN MEAL. These ain't her damn friends. Friends should be honest enough to say stuff like this to each other!

The problem isn't that it's difficult to work out what is fair, the problem is dealing with the manipulative tactics of those that want their meals subsidised by others

Steve is too funny!! LOL. I've been in that situation. One day I came to terms that those fancy meals with my friends were not in my budget, so I was honest with them about being on a budget and because I also wanted to hang out I found places to go with friends that was affordable and fun for all of us. Like instead of going to dinner, we'd go to lunch and oftentimes brunch. That cut the bill In half. Sometimes they'd treat me to dinner and in return I'd cook them something since I'm a great cook or I'd pay the tip (generous and still in my budget), or I'd pay the tolls or fill up their gas tank. Or she and her friends can do a pot-luck dinner where they eat at someone's house and the others bring dishes. My friends and I worked it out and in the end, we'd have a great time and we're all still friends to this day. Honesty is the best policy.

Up front, ask for separate checks. I get her point--we've all been in the position of not being able to afford everything we want. But if her friends want to be with her they will also see that she can't afford what they can and begin to go to places that are less expensive from time to time. If they are really her friends...

If I saw my friend order water & an appetizer, I wouldn't ask them at all to split the bill while we were getting expensive drinks, & food.

I just went through the same thing a few months ago. She should let them know ahead of time that she's on a budget and try to find something to do that's within her budget that they all would enjoy.

i know people who do this as a career. plan a night out with a bunch of people, arrive early start ordering expensive food and alcohol, and then split the bill with the innocent people who arrive on time, or a bit later, who order appetizers and don't drink. it is distasteful and beyond disgusting. walked away from this scenario, never looked back.

I had a friend like that at work. I was a single mother on a lunch budget and occasionally would lunch out with my co workers. One lady would get appetizers, main course, dessert and coffee for lunch! While everyone got a smaller plate and a soda. She always convey people to split the bill so we all paid a portion of her big meal. That’s not a friend.

I watched many of these Harvey Q&As and I think steve is always on point with his answers but this one is just awful and plain wrong. Maybe she tags along to the restaurant to keep her friends company or just to hang out. I would never split the bill if my friend ordered the lobster, expensive wine, appetizer, pre meal drink and a Swiss chocolate dessert when I ordered the salmon, house wine, garlic bread and a coffee. I don't care about a couple of dollars but if my friend racks up a tab that's $30+ extra then you pay for you, unless we're really good friends. Thing is many people take advantage of situations like this and tries to split the bill when they ordered more expensive stuff. If they know the bill is separate then they usually scale back. Funny because if they get stuck with the bill for what they ordered they try to call the other person cheap..

"Split the bill" doesn't mean you go 50/50. That means you pay for the stuff you bought, they pay for their stuff.

Being cheap and broke are not the same. Been in this situation you have to speak with your friends a head of time and ask to be on a separate check. Or you can go to the waiter and ask to be separate and ask them to be discreet about it.

In Italy, when you go out, they do not do separate check. It was like this in Rome and in Lecce (city in the south). Being from North America, I would always pay for what I would eat, so when I saw that everyone was eating then the check came and it was split among everyone I learned quickly. I couldn't be cheap. I decided to order well.

I had a girlfriend invite me and someone else for lunch or a meal to share some news. We went ordered and ate. When it came time to pay she asked if she could borrow money because she forgot her wallet or did not have enough. My other friend was a student and single mom so naturally I paid for this other friends meal. It was like $10 bucks but I never got paid back. Whenever we went out again, I was quick to ask for separate tickets or pay my movie ticket first to prevent future occurrences.

I don't understand the split the check thing at all. Every restaurant i've gone to with friends has just asked "will this be together or separate?" and we say separate and then they just give us individual bills with what we each ordered. That makes things so much easier. I will pay for whatever I order and you can pay for what you got. I would feel bad about making my friends pay half the bill if I got way more stuff than them. I would rather everyone just pay for their own thing.

Not to mention, most restaurants can split specific items between checks, so if your order starters and apps, they can always split those between everyone’s bill.

this is a fair question. if it's not practical to get your bill done separately....some of these meet ups just have to be missed out on. But if you are going to go and the check is going to be split evenly.....then Steve's advice is valid. Otherwise, give it a miss. They will eventually ask why you aren't going and you can tell them.

My friends know how I am, I'd look at the menu over a week in advance and calculate my bill. If i change my mind at the restaurant I have a pen and some paper to calculate. Heck my friends even ask me if they can use the pen and paper for their own bills XD and we still all leave the restaurant laughing like madwomen

We get one bill just to make it easy for the waitress. But everyone pays what they eat. “Plates” app on iPhone is really good to divide what everyone has to pay.

Steve she's on her Budget. There is another approach for that. Everyone is on Budget 50% of the Time. The best answer is keep your cash on the table for the food you order. The person with heavy money will do the Management. Everyone will appreciate the effort , rather than running away to the toilet during Bill time.

From the information given in this video I understand everything went down the way it did. But I feel it possible she didn't not want to speak up because she will run the risk of feeling outcasted from the group. Can't really not go either That will prob say something to her friends too. Her position is little difficult when you see what she is really dealing with. Not every detail comes out when asking for help. So I see Steve approach to this problem. This way all her friends will get a taste of the truth from this woman, without creating other issues at the same time.
