I remember when I first got my mount at level 40, I literally jumped for joy and cheered like a madman. Having to walk everywhere was such a pain and it felt so good to have that mount. never had that level of satisfaction with a game before... lol

I just recently got back into WoW after 4 years. And Classic is the only reason why. The grinding, traveling, socialising and rewards made vanilla so great.

important things to know in classic wow. zebras almost never have hooves and murlocs almost never have heads.

Classic levelling was a therapeutic experience, calm and smooth which is what alot of people want after a hard days work. In retail, somehow levelling feels more stressful even though its "easier".

Barrens has character. Barrens is like school its sucks, you deal with it and you had memories.

The point about power ups is probably my most favourite aspect of classic. One level you're struggling and with the next level or maybe a new item you're suddenly having a much easier time. It feels so good

That hunter quest with Onyxia... where you had to kill 3 different elites solo... was insane and made you use all your hunter skills, kiting, ice trap, eat, damage... etc.

The Barrens had cool wildlife. Especially for hunters. There was the white lion you could get from a quest(by failing it, cause you tamed the lion, instead of killing it) or the black lion that has an extremely high respawn timer so you had to camp the zone in days for a chance to tame him.

How is being able to throw on heirlooms, never having to eat or drink, not having to worry about gear cuz it levels with you, never worrying about dying, having self heals no matter what your class, having a mount at level 1, and being able to use dungeon finder until max level while never leaving org or stormwind better?

When showing the Hunter it made me think about when they still needed bullets. Ah, my time of when being an Engineer was being relevant!

As a horde player...never heard of hogger till i played Hearthstone.

I didnt know hogger was a quest til now... only played alliance for 3 days and it was level 30 15 years ago....

Barrens is WoW to me. The only thing I remember with fondness. I felt connected and one with it. Im glad I played Vanilla back then. I dont think Id be able to capture that feelingg ever again. I play the new Classic while it brings nostalgia as, it doesnt feel the same because of the awareness that there is another version/way of playing the game (retail). Retail robs me that feeling but its all good. I’m just glad it happend.

I remember just getting on a flight path and going downstairs to eat. Things took forever, but it felt so good to get a mount, complete a dungeon or getting a new ability.

Horde cities were designed with logic in mind. Orcs and trolls are going to build huts. Not beautiful cities. The lore of the tauren make sense that they live on a hill. Just like it makes sense humans built stormwind, and dwarfs built ironforge.

Quests like the zebras were meant to do with other quests on your way. But very true they scattered all over the zone without knowledge where spawns point are. Barrens is my best memory of vanilla when I played horde and I mainly played alliance. So that says a lot. I want a time machine just to go back

Cutting Teeth is probably the most known WoW quest. The first Orc quest killing boars in VoT. Think how many times you've seen killing those boars referenced but never being told that the person in the reference is there to kill the boars and that the task is incredibly easy. You just already know as soon as you see it.

I never played past TBC and it sounds like I kinda missed out on WOTLK, but missed out on nothing else. Classic has been such an amazing trip down memory lane. Got a bunch of Alliance topped out and now just leveling my first Horde in 16 years. Oh, Barrens.. How I missed you. And Orgrimmar.

Mankirk's wife is definitely more popular than hogger. I only ran into Hogger later on when people spoke about its popularity. Maybe that's because I started WoW in TBC, idk.

Blizzard didn't specifically choose Alliance first, but rather Eastern Kingdoms first. All evidence in the game files points to this (mobs that appear in EK had lower IDs than Kalimdor exclusive mobs, instance map IDs in EK are all lower, and so on). However because 3/4 Horde start in Kalimdor, Horde zones got screwed, but if you notice, the one Horde race is Eastern Kingdoms is much better than the zones of the one Alliance race in Kalimdor. Even just comparing something like end game zones. EPL was in good shape, while the game released with Silithus essentially unfinished.

Worst Quest: Killing Whelplings to get the Fire Enchantment. Most remembered Quest: Hogger or the Defias Questline. Messager and co.

I never got why Asmon was so pissed the servers went down at level 59. I mean it's not like he played classic anyways. His viewers played the game for him. Either standing around in town collecting hundreds/thousands of gold, letting people just bring him all the mats he needed for legendaries or crafted purps, watching videos and shit while they essentially boosted him through dungeons, or being completely okay with him just master looting himself every piece of gear he wanted though the majority of fights he was either tabbed out or made really dumb calls during a fight. No wonder he got burnt out on classic so fast.

My most satisfying moment was getting exalted with Darnassus as a human. Hitting 60 and hopping on my Nightsaber had me feeling like a badass. Meanwhile my gear was garbage and I had no intention of raiding. That was my endgame goal. The world was so big and you really felt like you were making an investment in your character when you stuck to the grind.

13:30 loved the down time as it meant that I had time to chat whit people be it party members, guild members or just randoms in /general. meaning that I got time to help that guy find that odd quest or be helped whit the same quest 30 min earlier.

I fucking loved Barrens chat lmao it was so dumb but memorable. PvP at the barrens was fun as a high level it felt cool to defend your small town. Also, deadmines was one of my favorite dungeons of all time.

I remember reading a levelling guide back in classic that was basically "Go here, kill these until you hit this level, then go here kill these for the next three levels, then go here and kill these for two more levels..."

I'd say most horde quest hubs are bigger designed. Look at the wrath of the lich king zones. The horde has bigger bases in every zone. Right when you first get to northrend, the horde has a giant castle and the same is seen in a lot of zones in northrend.

The worst is the headless raptors. Collect 8 raptor heads. Kill a raptor - no head. HOW!?

Personally, I prefer the old system. Starting off as a weak scrub, only to end up as a god of war after countless trials and tribulations, it's an unmatched feeling. You feel like you earned your might, that you have actually grown. At the same time, the downtime, having to eat and drink after fights, and the long travel times, it all made the game feel that much more like a classical adventure, where you go out into the wilderness, and struggle to survive. It kind of reminded me of D&D the first time I played, which I loved. Playing as a Hunter, shooting your prey, cooking them into your next meal, and making your next gear upgrade out of the hide you skin off them, it was a genuine experience.

In retail I only kill mobs I need too. Quests are too easy to level fast.

The barrens is hands down the best question zone ever

well on retail like 1-2 years ago that plainstrider quest in barrens was (idk atm) probably worse than most classic quests i've done so far in terms of drop rate

Plus there's no Guild Banks... no Alt characters with tonnes of space in their bank to store things.

1 thing i wish the guy mentioned for classic was for US hunters we didn't have unlimited ammo back then, where we had to keep track of arrows/ bullets and if we ran out like in dungeons, we had to resort to melee which like half our abilities were useless and those were out strong ones.

So my first character was horde, even though I didn't make it past level 20, I will never forget the barrens. The first time I came to cross roads there was an alliance raid going on and I instantly died. It was my first taste of pvp. I resurrected and jumped right back in the fray only to get one shot my a 60 mage. Us lowbies asked for help and in a few minutes some high levels showed up. It turned into a long hard battle. From that point on I was hooked (until cata). I ended up going alliance because it reminded me of lord of the rings and orcs were bad lol, but I spent so much time just chatting and leveling in the barrens its the reason why, even though I have a 50 hour a week job, housework, and kids, I made time to come back for classic and at least make it to 60. I came back one other time for wrath and got to 80. No more time for raiding, but I will come back one more time for the hardcore server. I probably won't last more than a month but I'll see you guys there very soon.

Aah.. the mounts.. I had to borrow 40g to buy my lvl 40 mount, and then I never got an epic mount until tbc. This was pretty common for max lvl players

I just did that zebra hooves quest. Started yesterday and finished today. It took fucking hours and the drop chance truly were as horrible how i recall it.

Yeah mained as a gnome rogue since a few months into vanilla release. Going back to classic I tried a Druid and holy shit it’s even harder Pve than rogue. First 15 lvls was sweaty tryharding melee with a 2h staff to kill 1 quillboar with Tauren racial cd’s and food buff and no bandage or potion cuz my one single backpack was filled with gather quest items.

Have good and bad memories in the old Barrens. But i miss the time there :D I was in the Horde (German Server) and when the alliance was taking over crossroad, than the high level horde came and helped us :D

What I recall from Vanilla Barrens is Chuck Norris.

Most memorable quests for me were because of their names - "What the Flux?" And "Kickin' Nass and takin manes" 🤣🤣🤣 being level 60 and well geared relatively early in WoW i always heeded the call of "The Crossroads are under attack!!!". Before BG's that shot was so fun. Theres end up being an hour + long battle as more and more people would show up to defend/attack. Inplayed on Illidan which always had a high amount of Horde (though Alliance was tge karger population in Vanilla). So unlike Asmo and his lame alliance friends, we usually wiped out the allies in due time. Either eay it was fun.

I wish those chests had green items... Haven't seen one drop from a chest yet.

I started to play wow on retail during the last patch of Wotlk, I remember lvling the last 8 lvls solely by spamming AB during the AB call to arms as prot warrior and that weekend was the most fun I even had in wow. Sadly 3 weeks after i max lvled the cata pre patch came and with it the icelance mages which ruined PvP completely. Cata was not too good either after the first month came the crashing Warrior PvP nerfs (sure war needed a nerf, but not the biggest overnerf a class ever saw with no fixes for another 8 months or at least as it seemed from forums and path notes :) ) which pretty much killed retail wow for me (played years on private server which ran last TBC patch :) ). I really hope there will be wotlk or TBC classic so I can play it. I am playing classic now but being lvl 35 warrior I am already burned out from the nightmare lvling and prob will just quit. The classic lvling is not hard, its unfair. If anyone played Dark souls, that game is hard but fair, you can finish the game with start gear if you are good enough. You cant do that in wow since wow is just gear+lvl math, almost no skill and space to outplay the pve content (unlike DS etc.) included so pls do not call lvling in wow hard, cause it is not hard, it is unfair which is big difference (sry it is just tilting to me when I hear anyone saying wow lvling is hard so much xD ). I just wish they toke the item system from classic, put it to retail (no fking titanforging etc) and toke away the neck power grind (you dont need an infinite power grind to keep game interesting for players so they keep playing/paying, just make it fun, which it would be without the need to grind ironically xD) and I would have the game of the year for me right there. Sadly the BfA item system kills the retail game so hard for me :(.

About the alliance zones being better and someone in chat saying ehat about the undercity. Undercity was an alliance zone (in lore) that was taken over to become horse so its design is literally based on the alliance lol.

I like grasslands and desert in real life, like it in the game also.

"Innervate me bro". "I cant im in Bear". WATER MADE YOU DISMOUNT. let me repeat. ANY bit of water made your mount disappear. Mounts could not swim. Were talkin puddles. reagents... using gear not for your armor tier. Cloth druids, Leather hunters. Gear transition at lvl 40.

These zones are memorable because they are at the begenning of the game and ppl usualy quited after that.

I feel like the hate for the Barrens is weird. You pick up all the quests when u get there at like level 11 and basically every mob is the zone is killable for a quest. You gotta kill the raptors for their heads, zebra for the hoofs, centaurs for the bracelets, and more I don't remember the names of. The zone is large but its par for the course in vanilla questing in terms of what you actually do, even the distances you gotta run. Imagine being horde in the hinterlands and your fucking city is on the shore at the bottom of the cliffs.

I think horde zones are pretty much flat things with Mobs on them. But I like Orc hunters more than Night elf hunters :(

19:50 - Both factions matter. Even if you're hardcore Aliance, without the Horde, Aliance would loose it's meaning and the other way around. Just like there's no hero without a villain for the hero to fight.

I don’t think you can “plan” an area like the Barrens. Players made it “The Barrens” organically. Was it unbalanced in favor of another faction? Probably. Did it define a particular era in WoW history? Pretty much. Is it an enigmatic design decision that most likely could not have been pre-planned to achieve such a specific purpose? Absolutely. Hopefully the creators can celebrate their successes (ESPECIALLY the unintentional ones) and pave the way for new organic, unintentional awesomeness like The Barrens. Even though I died dozens of times to get that one semi-rare lion hunter pet while I was there, the tension was worth it and absolutely memorable.

this guy make you think its hell but am lv 51 atm and all my gear give me agility for my hunter and i feel pretty powerful. I have no mana but i do as much damage as mage just with auto shot and pet. am already working on my black dragonscale pre raid bis that am gonna be able to wear at lv 55. I personally cannot wait to be lv 55 and have my pre-raid bis and be able mass murder mob.

What Hogger was to alliance, Mankrik was to horde i guess. As a Horde player only, i had never heard really whats special about Hogger
