Just finished Assassin's Quest. Oh god, this author is fantastic. It's so refreshing when compared to so much plot-driven fantasy I've read.

RIGHT!? Some of the best writing I've encountered from a modern fantasy author to date. I always get something new out of them even when I reread :)

I've been reading Hobbs books since I was 18, ten years ago now! It was probably the right ending for all, but i don't think the stories of all the characters in this book are done with. I'm waiting on the next trilogy to be announced!

I bought this book yesterday while looking for something to read. Never knew about Robin Hobb. Only after reading two chapters did I do a amazon check and realize that there was a world to explore. So this book is going on the shelf while I begin this journey.

I agree with pretty much everything you mentioned in this review. The Hobb books are so important to me for so many reasons and this finale was ALMOST everything I could have asked for... I have so many thoughts though. Gah. And I definitely agree about Robin Hobb's writing. It's simply the best Fantasy writing I've ever read. Hobb writes better than Martin, miles better than Rothfuss, I Just... I appreciate her so much hahaha.

I've read the Farseer and Liveship trilogies a few years ago, and it's probably time to get back to that very interesting fantasy world. I would say Hobb's writing style is different from other authors I've read, not sure what exactly makes it so. It's possible that she'll write more books with Fitz in them.

The writing is personal. It sticks to one or two view points and thought is very important. You see Fitz's thoughts and him thinking of others thoughts the Skill and Wit are magics of thought and character growth happens when thoughts are accepted or shared. Her writing is thought not normal storytelling.

One thing Robin Hobb has always done with her Fitz books is made sure that each trilogy has a sense of completeness and finality with their endings, so that had she not decided to continue any further, the reader wouldn't feel shortchanged or be left hanging with the story. Assassin's Quest could have worked as appropriate ending because it's narrated by an older Fitz looking back at the events of his youth from the perspective of being many years removed from them. Fool's Fate would have worked especially well as a series finale, because it has a sense of closure around the sense that Fitz would finally experience the kind of domestic satisfaction that had always been denied him. It will be interesting to see how the end of this trilogy will affect how we'll feel about what has gone before, and whether we will be able to imagine what avenues would be left to the author should she decide to resume the Elderlings story later ( She's not especially old, and might be able to recharge her batteries and pick the saga up again say, when she is in her 70's)!

John Whatley I feel this last book left so much open, especially when it comes to Bee. I'm absolutely sure there will be more series in the elderlings world, and I don't feel this was ever meant to cap the whole story, but rather just one of the main stories.

Yes! That's something I really appreciated about her books. I hate it when you're left with a lot of unnecessary cliff hangers. I will say she definitely left it open to keep exploring this world and I really hope she does :)

I just finished this book :) I'm not quite sure how to feel about the ending. I wish that Fitz had gotten to be a father to Bee for longer. Though it makes sense for him to end by carving a dragon, I didn't feel like it was his time yet.

Hi S! It's been a real pleasure to watch all of your reviews on Robin Hobb's books you done so far. Question 1 - Have you ever thought of doing a hangout/chitchat on Hobb's books? I would love to see a chat like that..and if I get to wish who would be in it, it would be you, "Kitty G", "Eagle's books" and "Big Z 7337" 😃..just a thought.. Question 2 - Any thought on interviewing Robin Hobb herself? You could always do it together with some one..and I think all the Hobb fans would love that.. Question 3 - If you could make a wish on a book collaboration between 4 authors, who would it be? My would be Diana Gabaldon, George RR Martin, Robin Hobb and Patrick Rothfuss (or Lian Hearn or Philip Pullman or Carlos R Zafon, can't decide 😃) and if I could some how go back in time..it would be Jane Austen, Leo Tolstoy, J RR Tolkien & Doris Lessing..I really would love to see those people write a book together!Wishing you a beautiful weekend, take care. Hugs & sunshine ☀ N

I so understand getting attached to characters and their world. Sometimes I’m so attached that I can’t continue on to other books for awhile because I’m not ready to give up those I just read yet. Has that ever happened to you or am I just a weird reader. Lol

I loved the way this book ended. It was such a solid way of both wrapping up the main characters' stories and of echoing the end of the original trilogy (which I haven't read since it came out, but it still sticks with me 20 years later, it was that good). Plus wolf imagery, of course! That said, I was really disappointed with the fact that the main characters from the Liveship books went through what felt like the climax of a separate story as part of this one. Because they were relegated to the background here, the drama involved (which was major!) felt unearned to me. I would much rather have seen that material either spread out throughout the series or else have an entire extra volume added so that the Paragon-related story could have carried the weight that it deserved.

I need to talk about it too! Aha I pretty much agree with a lot of what you said in this review, I'm so invested in this zorld, everytime I read one of these books I cannot think about anything else, I keep crying even when I'm not reading, I'm just not completly there! And assassin's fate was no exception. It was an awesome conclusion to the trilogy but also to the serie if she wants to finish it there, it wouldn't feel incomplete (however we do NEED more!). My favorite character of all times if by far Fitz also because I identify with him SO MUCH. I have to say I want such a fan of the fool in this trilogy (mostly in Fool's quest) I tend to find him a bit selfish at times... I feel like I'm the only person thinking this though aha, but I always take Fitz side! [[WARNING SPOILERS]] And the final was everything I could have hoped for, it's an end but it's not exactly a death, and that's what I needed. I LOVED having nighteyes again in the story, he is for sure my second fav character. I love nighteyes so much! And it made so much sense that they carved this wolf dragon together... I do have one complain about this book though. I really don't think Fitz "death" in Cleres was necessary. Here we are again having everyone think Fitz is dead... AGAIN. And all that so Bee, Beloved, Nettle and everyone else had to see he was alive... Just to die again? It made me a bit mad to be honest. We could have had him go back to Buckkeep with Bee(help her know and understand Beloved) and be slowly dying of the worms, forcing him to go to the quarry... It feels like this fake death was basically here to bring tears and despair the reader. Especially as the fool had to announce to everyone one by one, she wanted us to really really hear it, make us believe it. And it had no point but make the characters miserable one last time :( so yeah, I don't agree with that, but with its only a small detail in the end, it's still awesome, 5 out of 5 stars of course. Also I made this very emotional review while I was still sobbing at the end of my read : www.goodreads.com/review/show/1385508897

I definitely struggled with the Fool in the trilogy the most. I still love him but his actions in this one were a lot more selfish than in the prior books. Nighteyes back in the book MADE the story! I LOVE Nighteyes! And I agree with Fitz dying....It was one of those unnecessary repetitive things that I felt could have been left out. And Bee escaping twice only the get captured twice. I would have gotten the point if it had only happened once.

I agree with you the Fool is kind of selfish. His first and foremost thought is the future he foresees and is willing to use his best friend to get his vision to come to life and jilts him after it. Something he absolutely forgets in this one for the sake of revenge, yep selfish. But in this book you really see his selfishness and his foolishness as well. I re-read the books and I swear Amber was the kindest person, sympathetic and considerate, in this trilogy Amber is conniving and selfish. And by now, shouldn’t the fool expect Fitz to skip death in some way? I mean knowing Fitz for soooo long I would never believe him dead if I didn’t see his body and poked it with a stick after full inspection. Fool you were really a foolish in this one. That Trope, of Fitz dying was used so many times, I didn’t believe he would die there either. I was expecting the dragon carving, in the book bee dreams about it so I expected something like that. The carving of the wolf dragon was spot on, that definitely was the way to go for Fitz, and is foreshadowed, the first trilogy ends with Fitz thinking about carving his own dragon, he also thinks about it in Fool’s errand. But, what definitely did not make sense for me was Nighteyes. Robin Hobb spent such a long time with how the Wolf wanted his death to be natural. I loved that he was there, he is one of my favorite characters, but it made no sense. It did not feel like Nighteyes
