Asterina Starfish, some hobbyists think they are reef safe, others try their hardest to remove every last one of these mini starfish from their system. Here is my experience...

Aquilonastra stars (not asterina) are kinda like bristle worms, where they will “clean up” sick or dying animals/corals or in your case zoas. If they ate healthy polyps/corals, then they would actively eat the other zoanthus in your tank. My guess is that the zoas where releasing something that got the aquilonastra star’s attention and they came in and did their job.

A few weeks ago I saw a single Zoa polyp for 279 dollars. I walked right passed it. As a hobbiest I don't want to give the impression that its OK. I saw some 500 dollar Euphyllia too. Took a drive to Wavre just south of Brussels and picked up 4 Euphyllia headshop named species for 500, a soul dragon, a blueberry, etc. One store is a full service fish store owned by a gentleman who runs the store for pleasure and a small profit, employing 5 permanent people. The other is a coral store run by the owner, staffed by the owner financing a wallstreet lifestyle.

What if you take the GMK and put them in a box in the tank so they still get all the same environment but the stars can't get to them? Then we can see if the stars are killing the GMK or the GMK are just on there way out on there own... Add some science 🙂 rather than anecdotal analogy?

I like this idea! Next time the starfish plays sucker-face with the GMKs again, I'll move that particular frag into a box and see if certain polyps (or other polyps on that frag) are already on their way out. I have to say though, in this case the polyps appeared just as healthy as usual, and the starfish were on 2 adults and 1 baby polyp with no specific distinction.

I have 100% watched asterinas eat my zoas. Even picked them off and watched as they took parts of the polyp with it as they came off. I noticed the ones that are darker grey on top seem to be the culprits.
@InappropriateReefer

I also head the more colorful (more purple) ones are coral eaters... when something like this happens again, I'll pay attention to the pattern. From memory the ones I plucked off the Zoas do seems to have grey on them; can't recall if they were especially more grey though.

I don’t think you witnessed what you think you witnessed. Aquilonastra stars (the are not Asterinas) will not eat living coral tissue, they eat film algae, detritus, left over fish food, and decaying tissue. I am 99% sure what you witnessed was an already melting zoa just being cleaned up. I don’t know how you think an animal with a slow metabolism, whose entire digestive tract is the size of a grain of rice is eating an entire zoa polyp. As Mok-Yi said, they were likely either eating film algae off the polyp, or the polyp was already melting.
@Falteredsoul
@Falteredsoul Жыл бұрын
@@theanimalslaugh I watched them slowly eat an entire colony of specifically utter chaos. eneloping the polyps one by one. Specifically my utter chaos. They didn't bother any of my other zoas. They would eat away at most of the flesh and leave the base and part of the inside left. Which would die shorty after. I observed this for well over a week. They certainly were not fast at munching the polyps. Buy they were undeniably killing them. The only thing that saved the colony was me buying a harlequin shrimp.

Is it possible that the GMKs were already in the process of dying and the asterinas were just feasting on the dying tissue? It could explain why your other zoas seem untouched, especially considering GMKs are known for melting randomly. Either way, asterinas are just too much of an unknown for me.

I’ve had asterina star fish in my Nano for three plus years. At first I was removing them in fear they would “eat” my coral. I’ve come to realize there are a wide variety of the Asterina starfish. Three years later their all over my tank after day. None of my corals have issues and they act as a great CUC.

@@jessebrown1400 it’s up for debate! The ones in my tank are black spotted hahah Maybe it comes down to a food source? Again I’ve also read they don’t “eat” the corals, but the mucus left behind from them walking can cause harm to the corals. No concrete evidence yet!

For years I insisted that they don't eat zoes until I started buying expensive ones and I noticed my JF OG bloodshots not opening up. So I watched and noticed they don't eat them they suck something out of larger polyp ( usually more expensive) one's. Or they do something so they start to shrink and not open up. I still can't kill them so I put them in my QT .

Should of made a chemiclean bath to wipe out any bad bacteria that is causing the STN. I have been doing antibiotic baths after every frag and I have yet to had any losses. Is it helping!IDK but it should kill any bacteria and I have not seen any negative. Makes since that it should work but I don’t have proof except for the fact that even the elegance I cut healed quickly and the frags of that usually don’t make it before I started doing antibiotic dip.

I would normally agree, though in this particular case , the 3 GMK polyps were completely healthy and large before the event. Then again, something did cause the starfish to specifically go after them... and the starfish aren't relentlessly attacking the plug anymore after that two weeks. It's still a mystery.

Hey there, I am from Bangladesh and I am 14 years old. I will be setting up a 5 foot peninsula reef tank in a while. I will have a bio load on the heavier side with four tangs and smaller fish and I want it to be a mixed reef tank with some SPS corals. I was suggested to use the SeaTorch LM25 reef lights for the tank. He told me two units will be enough for the tank. I could not really find a lot of information on them, so I was wondering if they are any good or not. Will they grow corals and will they thrive? Will it look good and is it controllable? Could you please tell me? It would be of great help if you can. I plan on using a bubble magus curve 9 elite for the tank.

I have a question, I hope you, or one of your watchers can help me. I had green hair algae in my 75gal saltwater aquarium. I have pulled all rocks out. I have scrubbed them clean. I have washed them in water and bleach bath (4water to 1 bleach) soaked them in fresh water/bleach for 8 hours, turning and shaking until no more bubbles released. Rinsed each individually the same turn and shake method with fresh tap water. After rinsing, I left them to dry for 24 hours, then set them all out and washed with my pressure washer. Resoaked in fresh water for another 12 hours and now they are left out to dry. When should they be safe to outback un my tank? Should I soak then in a brine solution? Plain water? If so…how long do I soak before they won’t bea hazard? Thanks.
