@@josefengelhardt2767 He also uses mostly the same crew for each film as well. I think he does this not only to keep a close-knit "family", but I'm sure the fact that the cameramen already know how to frame a shot in his style without constant adjustment and explanation helps lol

A lot of directors actually use similar castings and crew. Scorsese, Tarantino, and Sandler just to name a few. It's a straightforward way to create your media and it beats constantly vetting new people and hoping you don't end up with any hardballs to work with. Plus a lot of them are friends off-screen, and why would you pass up on the chance to work with and help out your loved ones?

Wes always nails one thing: The mundane awkwardness of a normal conversation. In a way, I think everything about his style of filming (the angles, pacing, color palate) is built around setting the tone for these moments. We see and feel the uncertainty of one spoken word to the next, and we smile, as we see ourselves.

The weird thing is that I always found Anderson's dialogue quite stylized and stilted -- not in a bad way, but not naturalistic at all! Or maybe only like 10% naturalistic.

Several of his movies are highly over rated. Did love The Life Aquatic, Rushmore, and Moonrise Kingdom. The other problem with his movies is they obviously attract pretentious douche bags who think they're smarter (and somehow better) then people who don't watch his movies. Arrogant ass hats with very high opinions off themselves.

Just as Hollywood’s crème de la crème clamored to be in Woody Allen’s films, although I can’t recall any director other than Anderson who stacked all of established Hollywood in each film.

My favourite thing about Wes Anderson films is despite the whimsical, almost childlike nature of their aesthetic there is a dark melancholy that permeates throughout the story. Really makes the buttoned down emotions of his characters sing

Right? It's always bright and beautiful but a little... bare. Leaves you feeling uneasy in a way that's hard to put your finger on. Just the sets themselves feel... ominous, and I can't describe how. It's like life itself, in a minimalist aesthetic.

I have seen every one of Wes Anderson's films, and he never disappoints. They are truly bizarre, but in an enjoyable, likable way. The sets, colors, dialogue, camera angles....brilliant and unique. There is a REASON every big Hollywood name wants to be in his movies!

100%. I'd say some are slightly more forgettable as opposed to his top films which stay etched in your memory (Moonrise, Life Aquatic, Tenenbaums etc) but never bad, never even mediocre. Always at the very least a good, enjoyable experience that lifts your spirit.

I do think Isle of Dogs is a bit disappointing compared to his other works, but it’s because I didn’t quite resonate with the characters as much as I should. It’s still pretty good though.

I often equate Anderson's work to that of a painter. It's as if Anderson's films are living works of art. In a world where films, and filmmakers, have become cookie-cutter, it's nice to have this kind of unique take on storytelling. I don't know what this film will bring, but it looks quite interesting. So far, The French Dispatch is my favorite WA film, but that could change.

@Concrete It's a group effort; no one person/role does everything on their own. The costume designer/director comes up with designs based on input and feedback from the director (among others). If the director doesn't like it then they go back to the drawing board.

@@gt6808 lol no it's not a filter, it's to some extent what you say but it's actually mostly him using the kind of vintage film stock and cameras and high-saturation film processing that those "filters" in the photo apps are meant to try and simulate.

I'm not surprised that audience reviews are so low. They have been trained with junk food all their lives. I am also not surprised that there are so many famous actors in this movie since they have been forced into performing for most of their careers into high profit junk food movies and just jump at the opportunity to do something creative and outside the box. They are, after all, artists. I loved this movie. It was an artistic masterpiece. I have literally fallen asleep taking my kids to the cinema in yet another iteration of Transformers but this movie kept me awake just waiting to see what would happen next. With most movies nowadays, I feel like I'm watching the same dozen or so scripted stuff, rehashed, again and again. Such a breath of fresh air!!!

God I love Wes Anderon's style so much. One of the true artistic voices out there along with Tarantino and a few others. You just feel it in your bones that it's them when you watch a trailer, before even a few seconds have gone by.

It’s kinda a parody of itself at this point, there’s no other director whose style is so restrictive, all-encompassing, and un-real. characters with flat affect? check. symmetrical shots? check. pastel colors? check. and etc… like the twee, hipster equivalent of the marvel franchise. or david lynch if he spent his youth in portland and continuously refused to try anything new

@@bc5588 Wes Anderson makes movies in a very specific style and so the parodies follow naturally because genres and tropes are low-hanging fruit for that sort of thing, but don't confuse it with a genuine critique. There's no denying his movies feel different than most other stuff out there, and he's clearly achieving what he sets out to do with consistency. From an artistic standpoint, that's pretty successful. Whether you enjoy it or would like to watch all of his movies back-to-back is a separate matter. There's a lot of breakdowns of his style out there and you should feel free to add your voice to that corpus - and to be fair, you sorta did. Fortunately, we're not constrained to only his movies, just like we're not constrained to listening only to pop music, or looking at only post-modern art or any of the other media and artistic genres that take shit for having a narrow compass or palette. I'm looking forward to this because I know roughly what I'm getting, that'll I'll enjoy it, and that tomorrow I can move on to something else.

Asteroid City brings in a bunch of actors for good performances, interesting shots, unique production design, and a feel of new cinema recreating old cinema. Good start for me on Wes Anderson’s filmography.

If you're just watching the trailer and haven't seen the film yet, maybe don't continue reading: I've been a huge Wes Anderson fan for such a long time, seen all of his films and have been obsessed with and very much influenced in my own creative work by the way he's building worlds, characters and stories. With Asteroid City though... I gotta say I thoroughly enjoyed his previous film French Dispatch but this one was a bit of a miss for me. Even though (as always) he has the most incredible cast (where literally every time a new character is introduced my jaw drops), insane set design, amazing dialogue, pacing (I could go on and on...), there was something about it where I just felt like it wasn't coming together fully as a piece... is that just me or did anyone else feel similarly? Very curious about how people received it.

14 year old Wes Anderson fan here! I've seen all of his movies multiple times, and I can't even begin to explain how excited I am for this one. My dad introduced me to Wes Anderson when I was still pretty young, and since then I've really grown to love his movies. Moonrise kingdom is literally my fav movie of all time, closely followed by The Grand Budapest Hotel, and The Royal Tenenbaums. I also LOVE Fantastic Mr. Fox. Okay I just love all his movies. Anyways I'm super excited to see this one!

You're still pretty young still. You have a good dad though. Moonrise Kingdom is my favorite of Wes Anderson's films. It gets mixed reviews from adults but I think they forget what it was like to still be a kid. Have you seen much Stanley Kubrick? He also had a very strong visual style to his films.

Mr anderson onviously is trying to recreate the childhood he sorely misses. His reminiscent style reminds us all of our past and the great times we spent. A truly magical director with his finger on the pulse of melancholy and drama

@ZanFear that depends on the region of the world your in i think. I live in the states and D+ only has Isle of Dogs. No Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, Grand Budapest Hotel, OR French Dispatch..... then again a lot of those are R and D+ still has very few of those types of movies on there lol.

I’m so happy to see ‘Gabe’ from Eighth Grade playing the son of Jason Schwartzman’s character… he was fucking fantastic in Eighth Grade and he is perfect for style/world of Wes Anderson. Not to mention he totally reminds me of a young version of Jason Schwartzman, on par with Rushmore, it’s perfect casting. I think we’ll see him in more of WA movies in the future

Just like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood in 2019 and Licorice Pizza in 2021/2022, what a perfect summer film to treat us with this year. I can't wait to watch this in a cinema basked in the heat of the summer air - it is always one of my highlights of a summer to watch a film in the cinema at least once.

But both of those films were kinda meh, weren't they? Mildly interesting late entries in great filmmakers' careers that doesn't compare well against their best features. Fun to watch a single time and then barely remember they exist until someone else mentions them. Guess they can't all be gems. I'm sure I'll enjoy it while it's on, going in with such low expectations.

I love that Jeffrey Wright seems has become a staple in Wes Anderson films. Wright is great and such a gifted actor. His performance in The French Dispatch was so good that he certainly earned his place among the Wes Anderson regulars, like Frances McDormand, Bill Murray and Edward Norton.
