Atheist Scholar Explains The Old Testament In Its Original Context | Joshua Bowen PhD
(Subscribe to @GnosticInformant) / gnosticinformant
Following from the popular Volume 1, The Atheist Handbook to the Old Testament: Volume 2, takes up the challenge of providing a clear and useful guide to those wanting a better understanding of the Old Testament, including its cultural and historical background, as well as discussions on contentious topics like violence and genocide, and whether the Exodus was a real historical event. Volume 2 also covers the narrative of the Old Testament from the conquest to the divided monarchy, and a brief history of Egypt to help situate the biblical text within agreed historical events.
This book provides:
clear and straightforward explanations to complex topics
direct engagement with hot-button Old Testament issues
specific arguments to help you in a debate or discussion
Whether you are looking to debate problematic Old Testament issues on social media or have a relaxed, meaningful discussion with a family member over coffee, The Atheist Handbook to the Old Testament is an indispensable resource for you.

Joshua Bowen and Megan Lewis keep climbing the ladder of scholarship excellency. In my view the best lesson we can take from their work is that the bible wasn't the only set of books to put forward some of the foundational values of civilisation... and in most cases it wasn't the first one.

I love the fact that we know more about these societies and their religions than they knew themselves. That's history and critical scholarship for you! The same will happen for our societies in the future, although, I think we have a better grasp on current events today and our place in the world. The US for example is overwhelmed with religious motivated bigotry, ignorance, defiance of government, and in all stakes, is willing to be needlessly violent to achieve those bronze age goals through bronze age methods.

*The Enuma Elish would later be the inspiration for the Hebrew scribes who created the text now known as the biblical Book of Genesis.* Prior to the 19th century CE, the Bible was considered the oldest book in the world and its narratives were thought to be completely original. In the mid-19th century CE, however, European museums, as well as academic and religious institutions, sponsored excavations in Mesopotamia to find physical evidence for historical corroboration of the stories in the Bible. ***These excavations found quite the opposite, however, in that, once cuneiform was translated, it was understood that a number of biblical narratives were Mesopotamian in origin.*** *Famous stories such as the Fall of Man and the Great Flood were originally conceived and written down in Sumer,* translated and modified later in Babylon, and reworked by the Assyrians ***before they were used by the Hebrew scribes for the versions which appear in the Bible.*** ***In revising the Mesopotamian creation story for their own ends, the Hebrew scribes tightened the narrative and the focus but retained the concept of the all-powerful deity who brings order from chaos.*** Marduk, in the Enuma Elish, establishes the recognizable order of the world - *just as God does in the Genesis tale* - and human beings are expected to recognize this great gift and honor the deity through service. It's a common device in many religions to symbolize cleansing, transformation, passing from one phase of life into another by water crossings. Other symbols can equally be adopted for similar ritualization in the same manner, e.g. the tradition some American South slaves had of jumping over a broom or garden tool to wed (see "Roots" for a depiction). So the Red Sea crossing could easily have been an allegory as Gnostic Informant proposes; perhaps even a merger of more than one crossing story, since the drowning of the Egyptians seems not only unlikely but overkill as an original storytelling device. [Wash that Egyptian right out of our hair?]

Considering the book isn't extolling the old testerment as even remotely true it can certainly be said to be a useful book to read if you would like to debunk Christian apologetics, on the otherhand, the historical handbook of the old testerment would suggest the possibilty that its factual. So I'd say the title is very fitting.

If a civil debate was held on one topic only.When was the book of exodus written,close to the events purported to have occurred or 700 years later by a people engaged in mythology it would be a blow out win for the former.People like Joshua Berman and David Falk would easily show how no reasonable person could use terms or words no longer in use 700 years later.kind of like when I read old newspapers from the early 1900s and can immediately notice the differences in use back then.

*Let's briefly run through the 'ten plagues':* First the rivers are turned to blood, all the fish die and the waters stink. No one has any water to drink. This lasted for seven days and would have resulted in mass deaths due to dehydration. Amongst the first to die would have been the children. *The author doesn't think to explain how the Hebrews were saved from this. No record of it was made anywhere in any Egyptian records.* Exodus 7:17-25. This is followed by a plague of frogs which had somehow survived the rivers of blood that had killed all the fish. A mere inconvenience, nothing more, and a big stink when they all died, *but no record anywhere.* Exodus 8:2-13. Next we have the plague of lice about which very little is said *and of course no record was made.* To a people who would have been accustomed to lice this would probably have been nothing remarkable. Exodus 8:16-18. Then the flies. Apart from the land being 'corrupted', whatever that means, there don't appear to have been any ill effects from this and they disappear as quickly as they came a few days later. *Nothing worth recording there, obviously.* Exodus 8:21-31. Now the author seems to begin to lose the plot and describes a 'grievous murrain' *which kills all the Egyptians' cattle, horses, camels and sheep.* ***They all died - hold that thought.*** *No Egyptian historian or keeper of official records deems it worthy of mention.* Exodus 9:3-6. Next come the boils which afflict everyone and everything, including all the livestock ***even though they had been killed by the 'grievous murrain' a few days earlier,*** *apparently, and yet no-one thought to write anything down anywhere.* Of course, anyone who understood anything about microorganisms and the aeteology of boils would have described this as an infestation with Staphylococcus - the signs of faecal contamination - but the author was obviously unaware of these. Maybe he was just in too much of a muddle by now to care. Exodus 9:8-11. Now it's hailstones so bad that every plant, every tree, every servant (for servant read slave) ***and even the livestock (that our story-teller has forgotten already that he killed off in the fifth plague before given them boils in the sixth) were harmed.*** It looks like our story-teller has learned from his earlier silly mistake with killing all the livestock too soon then having to resurrect them later. He mentions that some plants survive. Do I smell stinking fish again? *The greatest hail storm in all Egyptian history, apparently, but not worthy of being recorded.* Exodus 9:18-25. It's the turn of the locusts and it's suddenly obvious why some plants had to survive. *How could the locusts turn Egypt into a barren desert if the hail storm had done it earlier?* Good thinking there. Shame about the earlier boob! *Mysteriously, no Egyptian scribe appears to notice any of this or the inevitable famine and mass starvation which would have ensued.* Exodus 10:4-15. And for the penultimate trick, it's going to be dark for three days. *No one makes a record of this, obviously.* Exodus 10:21-23. The last 'plague' is not so much a plague as a ritual genocide. *Here our tale takes a nasty turn and the true character of the Hebrew god is revealed in all its glory - a petty, vindictive, homicidal psychopath who has not yet acquired the omniscience he will be granted later. He kills every firstborn Egyptian in a single night,* ***including the firstborn of all the cattle that died in the fifth plague.*** *For some reason he needs the Hebrews to leave a secret sign so he doesn't kill them too. Weirdly, he can't tell his own chosen people from ordinary Egyptians and doesn't even know where they live.* And he had been leading up to this, apparently, because after every plague he 'hardens the heart' of Pharaoh so that he wouldn't let the Hebrews go. He had actually been planning this genocide all along just to impress people with his powers. *And still no-one thought even this mass killing in a single night worth making a note of in any Egyptian records.* Exodus 12:1-30. And then, of course, Pharaoh could muster up 600 horses to pull the chariots ***from amongst all the dead livestock from the 5th plague*** (Exodus 14:7). Google *"Rosa Rubicondior: Origins Of The Exodus Myth"* ------------------------------------------------------------------ In addition, look up the below articles. *"Debunking Christianity: PATTERNS OF POOR RESEARCH- A Critique of Patterns of Evidence:Exodus"* *"For you were (not) slaves in Egypt: The ancient memories behind the Exodus myth - Archaeology - **Haaretz.com**"* *"Why the Exodus Story Has Value Despite Being Complete Myth - Psychology Today Australia"* *"Is the Exodus a Myth? - Worlds Beyond"* *"Historicity of Exodus and Moses - The Creatively Maladjusted"* *"Biblical Contradiction #81. 22:00 "Isn't it possible?" This sounds like some kind of fallacy. They are trying to make the evidence fit their preconceived conclusion. Occam's Razor might be useful here. But there's probably some more powerful tool. We need to look at the probabilities perhaps? If something is the least likely but still possible option and we grant it, "for argument's sake", then that leads us to another point where again we are confronted with choices and the least likely but possible option supports the Bible, and again we accept it, we're piling one unlikely option onto another. The combination is even less likely than each one on its own. I'm not expressing this well but you all probably get the point.
@fepeerreview3150
@fepeerreview3150 Жыл бұрын
21:35 I suppose another response is, "Yes, it's possible though it appears to be a much less likely option. (State the reason why.) And then finish the response with the question. So isn't ALSO possible that Nebuchadnezzar is NOT the father of Balshezzar?" It will be much harder for the antagonistic interlocutor to refuse to accept the possibility. Then we have 2 hypotheses and a pile of evidence. So we can sift through the evidence together and look at which one is supported by more of the evidence. The subtext here is that the antagonists will eventually have to acknowledge, at least to themselves if not out loud, that they are clinging to beliefs despite the evidence. At that point they will need time to digest that reality or create a new excuse to allow them to maintain their fiction. Either way, we've done all we can do at that point.

I see your point. Language is important here. Wouldn't "Song of the Sea" be the Israelite side of the Sea People's invasion of Egypt? Wouldn't this suggest that they were actually from further afield than Canaan originally, & then settled in the region after the Bronze Age Collapse? I've always suspected populations from as far as the Iberian and Morocco constituted The Sea People. This defeat at Egyptian hands would long survive in their myth, possibly as an exodus from slavery. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Egypt mention chasing them back to Canaan and crushing them? Called them nomads on the stele.

Can you do an episode about the two different YHWH's and the two different Old Testaments? Nobody even knows there are two and it's weird... The Kuntillet ‘Ajrud inscriptions mention blessings by the names of YHWH of Samaria (Yehowah) and YHWH of Teman (Yahweh). Like all ancient Near Eastern gods, these two regional gods must have had central temples. This article examines their possible locations and suggests that the combination of the Kuntillet ‘Ajrud inscriptions with the eighth-century prophecies of Amos and Hosea holds the key for identifying these. In light of a detailed analysis of Hosea’s and Amos’ prophecies, it is further suggested that YHWH of Samaria was the name of the major God of the Kingdom of Israel and his main temple was located at Bethel, and that YHWH of Teman was the name of the God of the southern desert regions and his temple was located at Beer-sheba. Israelite traders who traveled southward probably visited the latter god’s temple, offered him sacrifices, made vows to repay him if they succeed in the expedition, and thus turned him to be their patron god during their travel in the desert region. This suggested identification explains why the Judahite cult place of Beer-sheba appears in Amos’ prophecy alongside the Israelite sanctuaries of Bethel, Gilgal, and Dan.

I find one of the greatest challenges Christianity faces is; To explain their worship of the Old Testament God who is depicted as indecisive, intolerant, destructive, and genocidal. While claiming to believe in monotheism also believe this God is the father of the New Testament Jesus who appears separate and distinct in body and personality characteristics yet they are supposedly one with each other . The "Trinity concept doesn't white wash these differences any more today than it did just prior to the First Council of Nicaea. The only argument remaining is Isiah 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.” in which case, Christianity is worshiping a god whose core psychopathy is both good and evil. If this is the "God" who created the universe, then humanity is doomed to a subservient eternity at the hands of a dictator who demands constant reassurances through meaningless rituals. I personally believe the entire system of belief is nonsense.

People believe in religious ideas for a variety of reasons. Mostly because they were born into a specific religion, or they came to a period later in their lives where they needed healing from a horrific experience or a multitude of poor life choices. But most do not read their bibles, instead simply taking for truth what priests, ministers, etc., tell them. When bibles are read, they are interpreted inside an already formed bubble of ideas that don’t even remotely resemble the ideas to which the religion was founded on. In short, they lack an understanding of religious history. For instance, every time I hear someone talking about Christianity, they refer to “The Bible”. But when a historical study of bibles is conducted, it becomes clear that there are a multitude of bible versions throughout, Roman Catholicism, Fundamental Christianity, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and Oriental Orthodox Christianity. So when “The Bible” is being referred to, “A” bible (one of many bibles) is being referenced. These bible translations, in many cases, are not only different from each other, interpretations from individual to individual that are derived from each version can be vastly disparate, and that is one reason we end up with distinct and opposing views. One very important view that has dominated Christianity since the second century CE, is a belief in heaven and hell. Most believers don’t know and aren’t taught that this was not a belief that Jesus or his disciples would have held but rather came to popularity through Greek philosophers. Like all systems within various cultures of a broader society, as people change and their attitudes toward certain topics spill over into the larger culture, religious leaders are forced to change their positions on those policies and ideals. This idea is highly evident not only by the changes in religious policies and ideals we’ve seen over time but also in the numerous religions and their variations which have risen and fallen throughout human history. As we advance in knowledge and change our perspective of our own existence, so does our belief in our gods change, and therefore so do our gods. Lastly, a couple of definitions to put ideas into perspective. Faith - a strongly held belief or theory. Opinion - a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. Neither word is identical, yet neither is dissimilar.

For religious people the idea is not logic and understanding, it,s partly because they wish to secure their next life and partly because they want to secure their power bases in the current life. So, talking about metaphors and stuff like this is only a means to avoid answering difficult questions. Otherwise, you can read great modern literature, I am sure there you will find more beautiful ideas and much more subtle arguments.

Nebuchadnezzar being the father of belshazzar. I believe the word father in the text and sometime used as the term adoption. Or Guardian For example in Genesis 9 Canaan comes out the boat with Noah and his sons. Genesis 9:18 And the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and Ham he was the father of Canaan. Now Canaan establishes the 11 nations of the Nephilim After the flood showing he is a completely different breed from the Adamatic race. So in the reestablishing of the 11 nations of the Nephilim After the flood shows the term father only meant ham was responsible for him and in turn brought him on the boat. It is also confirmed in the letters as they declare only eight Souls were saved, simply because only eight of them were from Adam, So in conclusion this could be the same thing that took place between Daniel and his ruler...

What do Samaritans believe in terms of the Bible? Samaritans believe that the Jewish Torah, and Judaism, have been corrupted by time and no longer serve the duties that God mandated to the Israelites on Mount Sinai. The holiest site for Samaritans in their faith is Mount Gerizim near Nablus, while Jews view the Temple Mount in Jerusalem as their most sacred location. The Samaritan religion: Their principal canonical text and main norm of religious observance is the Samaritan Pentateuch. The Samaritan Pentateuch contains the basic text of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, yet there are about 6,000 differences between it and the masoretic Jewish version. Why did the Judahites not like the Samaritans? The Jews called them "half-breeds" and sent them home. The Samaritans built their own temple which the Jews considered pagan. The feud grew, and by the time of Christ, the Jews hated the Samaritans so much they crossed the Jordan river rather than travel through Samaria.....

Yahweh the god that is worshipped by Jews and Christians is an ancient god in the Canaanite pantheon and is 1 of 70 sons of the high god El Elyon.Yahweh is also the brother of Baal according to the ancient Canaanite mythology. El the high god divided the nation and gave each son a nation whose people were to worship. Yahweh was given the nation of Israel and he was to be worshipped by them. Today its beyond sad that Christians have zero clue to the history of what they believe in. They choose to stay ignorant because the information is available to them.

That indeed is the general consensus of critical scholarship. In the Old Testament there appears the concept of Yahweh’s having a heavenly court, the sons of God. They are referred to variously as the ‘sons of God’ (bene ha ‘elohim, Gen 6.2, 4; Job 1.6, 2.2; or bene ‘elohim, Job 38.7), the ‘sons of gods’ (bene ‘elim, Pss. 29.1, 89.7 [ET 6]) or the ‘sons of the Most High’ (bene ‘elyon, Ps. 82.6). *It is also generally agreed that we should read ‘sons of God’ (bene ‘elohim) for ‘sons of Israel’ in Deut. 32.8 (see below).* There are further numerous places where the heavenly court is referred to without specific use of the expressions ‘sons of God(s)’ or ‘sons of the Most High’. Thus, the heavenly court is mentioned in connection with the first human(s) (Gen 1.26, 3.22; Job 15.7-8) or elsewhere in the primaeval history (Gen. 11.7; cf. Gen 6.2 above), and in the context of the divine call or commission to prophecy (1 Kgs 22.19-22; Isa 40.3,6; Jer. 23.18, 22; cf. Amos 3.7). We also find it referred to in connection with the guardian gods or angels of the nations (Isa.24.21; Ps. 82.1; Ecclus 17.17; Jub. 15.31-32; cf. Deut 32.8 and Ps. 82.6 above; implied in Dan 10.13, 20; 12.1). Apart from the isolated references to the divine assembly on the sacred mountain in Isa 14.13 and to personified Wisdom in the divine assembly in Ecclus 24.2, the other references to the heavenly court are more general (Zech. 1.10-11, 3.7, 14.5; Ps. 89.6-8 [ET 17], 7.10, 21, 25, 27, 8.10-13; cf. Job 1.6, 2.2, 38.7 and Pss. 29.1, 89.7 [ET 6] above). Just as an earthly king is supported by a body of courtiers, so Yahweh has a heavenly court. *Originally, these were gods, but as monotheism became absolute, so these were demoted to the status of angels.* … *It is in connection with the Canaanite god El and his pantheon of gods, known as the ‘sons of El’, that a direct relationship with the Old Testament is to be found. That this is certain can be established from the fact that both were* ***seventy*** *in number.* At Ugarit we read in the Baal myth of ‘the ***seventy*** sons of Asherah (Athirat)’ (sb’m. bn. ‘atrt, KTU 1.4. VI.46). Since Asherah was El’s consort, this therefore implies that El’s sons were ***seventy*** in number. *Now Deut. 32.8, which is clearly dependent on this concept,* declares, ‘When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God’. The reading ‘sons of God’ (bene ‘elohim) has the support of the Qumran fragment, 4QDeut, the LXX, Symmachus, Old Latin and the Syro-Hexaplaric manuscript, Camb. Or. 929. *This is clearly the original reading, to be preferred to the MT’s ‘sons of Israel’ (bene yisra’el), which must have arisen as a deliberate alteration on the part of a scribe who did not approve of the polytheistic overtones of the phrase ‘sons of God’.* Interestingly, it is known that the Jews believed there to be ***seventy*** nations on earth, so that the sons of God were accordingly also ***seventy*** in number. This emerges from the table of the nations in Genesis 10, where there are ***seventy*** nations, and from the later Jewish apocalyptic concept according to which there were ***seventy*** guardian angels of the nations (Targum Pseudo-Jonathon on Deut 32.8; 1 En. 89.59-77, 90.22-27). This view, which I have defended previously, seems eminently reasonable. … *Finally, it is interesting to note that the Old Testament never refers to the heavenly court as ‘the sons of Yahweh’.* As we have seen above, apart from one instance of bene ‘elyon, we always find the ‘sons of God’, with words for God containing the letter s ‘l (bene ha ‘elohim, bene ‘elohim, bene ‘elim). *This finds a ready explanation in their origin in the sons of the Canaanite god El.* Eventually, of course, the name El simply became a general word for ‘God’ in the Old Testament, and so it is found many times. *"Excerpt from “Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan” by John Day | Lehi's Library"* *"The Most Heiser: Yahweh and Elyon in Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32 - Religion at the Margins"* based on the *majority scholarly consensus.* (Written by Thom Stark who is a Christian) *"Michael Heiser: A Unique Species? - Religion at the Margins"* (A second response to Michael Heiser)

God wanted equality. In the beginning Elohim (meaning more than ONE God) made Man & Woman in THEIR image. So the first living Gods on earth were Adam & Lilith. Adam treated his 1st wife Lilith as a lesser being and would not treat her as an equal but wanted power over her- going against Gods orders. She left the abusive relationship and he made up stories about her which were not true. Adam asked for another wife and Eve was fashioned. He then broke another marriage covenant and he accused his 2nd wife. So we have father god who wanted to do what he wanted with no regard and Mother God who protected the ones who needed help. Now you can’t say we don’t have a Mother God because how on earth do you think you got here!!! The first shall be last! Mother God doesn’t want to be worshipped she wants you to worship your family and everyone! Daughter Zion will trash thy nations with a rod of iron. The Bride is awake. The MEN who wrote the scriptures left WOMEN out of the Bible on purpose because they too followed Adam aka Satan, wanting all the power and control. Women possess the power of the spirit and men feared that because it’s stronger than might. The living Mother on earth is the messiah is the female Christ and she wants peace compassion forgiveness unity equality and love. She doesn’t want to be worshipped she wants you to worship each other.

Women had more biological duties than men (giving birth, caring for the offspring, hunting, gathering, teaching what they discovered about edible plants, inedible plants, seasons, natural environmental dangers etc) and were naturally more observant and thus much more intelligent than their ball scratching and butt sniffing male counter parts. And it was many generations after the first woman appeared that the first intelligent man appeared (the 7 days and nights could be generations), but before this "fall of man", women were stuck in the "Garden of Eden" with man apes who spent their days running around like savage hedonist narcissistic chimps. As a non-atheist, I don't read the stories. I would say there was no historical David or Jesus. The stories present a prophetic message as a witness to their coming. To me, anything that has an historical basis, such as Nebuchadnezzar, is the vehicle used to present a hidden prophetic message and are used to present it as legitimate. Noah treads the winepress of wrath, is found naked, is clothed, and tells us that it is when God will put an end to all mortals. It may also be telling us that there will be waters above the dome of the sky, likely, an icy one, controlling the winds, etc. The story of the tower of Babel tells us that we will all speak the same language some day. The prophetic message is the point, rather than being a historical recored. In a repeat of the story of Noah, Adam, who is also found naked and clothed, wields the fiery sword and puts an end to all mortals on earth by opening the way to the Tree of life. Adam and Noah are clothed from the nakedness of this prophetic message of the Day of the Lord, the day of vengeance as judgment. Jesus and David represent actual individuals. This is David's kingdom and, in the end, Jesus hands the kingdom over and ascends beyond the heavens themselves, to a galaxy far, far, away, from whence he came, so to speak. Noah, Adam, Joshua, and Esau, who lives by the sword, are all witness to the Day of the Lord, when Jesus treads the winepress as the sacrifice of being made to be sin on the day of vengeance AS judgment.

Over 3,500 years ago, God said that the Jews would recall his bringing them out of the land of Egypt: And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons forever. And it shall come to pass, when ye be come into the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD's passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. (Exodus 12:24-27) Though scattered, and though many are unbelieving, there continues to be an observance of the Passover among the Jews, just like God said. In it, they witness to the acts of God in Egypt in bringing the seed of Abraham out of Egypt, just like God promised him (see Genesis 15:13-14). The works and promises of God are rooted in a land and a people: the land of Israel and the nation of the Jews. People in their unbelief may choose to deny them, but the witness that they bear remains. God promised to bring the scattered nation back into the land in the latter days. Jeremiah 31:10 reads, Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock. In our very day, Jews are returning to the land promised to Abraham and his descendants. The blood of a lamb without blemish was applied to the doorposts of believing Israelites so that the Lord would pass over their houses that night in Egypt so very long ago (see Exodus 12:1-13). This was a picture of the innocent blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that would be shed to atone for the sins of mankind (John 1:29, Colossians 1:14). All are invited to, by faith, trust in Christ and his shed blood for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 24:46-47). Apart from faith in Jesus Christ, men will perish (see John 3:16).

God didn't say anything. If anyone thinks the Bible is the "word of God" and not ancient authors speaking for their imaginary god, they need to read the below article from a critical Biblical scholar and spend some time reading the other articles on his website. "So for example, when we read carefully what Yahweh says in the book of Leviticus, namely that the Aaronids (the sons of Aaron only), are high priests contrary to the Levites, that they alone are Yahweh’s mediators and the Levites are reduced to mere ministers of the Aaronids, that only through sacrifice can one atone for sins and not confession as preached by the Levites, or more precisely the Levite’s Yahweh, etc., *it can be no coincidence that in these laws and commandments,* ***which are placed on the mouth of Yahweh,*** *that Yahweh himself is presented advocating and legitimating the very views and beliefs of the specific priestly guild writing the text, and, contrary to the views and beliefs of their rivals, the Levites and the Levite’s Yahweh!* We will examine this more closely when we get to the contradictions in these books. But in short, this was the function of ancient literature, and we are allowing these ancient texts to speak for themselves. *In this particular case, the Levites and Aaronids wrote specific texts that each advocated their religious beliefs, views, and their position as high priests* ***by writing these sentiments directly into the mouth of their god!*** But just studying the Bible alone, scientifically, affords us the occasion *to see that many of these so-called words of Yahweh are* ***actually the very words of the texts’ authors.*** When we see numerous texts employing this ancient literary technique, and moreover, ***presenting Yahweh as the spokesperson for their own views and agenda,*** *and* ***contrary*** *to Yahweh’s other words in other texts written by other authors employing the same technique,* how can one conclude otherwise. In other words, when in the composite text that we now call the Bible we find: Yahweh declaring that only Aaronids can officiate as his priests and Yahweh declaring that all Levites can officiate as high priest; Yahweh declaring that sin is atoned through confession and Yahweh declaring that sin is only expiated through the sacrificial cult, no exceptions; Yahweh declaring that he gave laws and commandments at Sinai and Yahweh declaring that he only gave the Ten Commandments at Sinai; Yahweh commanding to exterminate all the Canaanites without pity and Yahweh declaring to tolerate them and live in their midst; Yahweh declaring that the wilderness generation were disloyal and rebellious and Yahweh declaring that they were a paradigm of loyalty and faith; Yahweh declaring that he may be offered sacrifices at any altar and Yahweh declaring that there is only one altar where sacrifices are to be offered up; Yahweh declaring that the people saw him at Sinai and Yahweh declaring that they only heard his voice; Yahweh declaring that circumcision is an eternal covenant and keeping the land depends on observing this very commandment and Yahweh declaring the Mosaic laws as the covenant and keeping the land is dependent on keeping these laws; Yahweh declaring that he dwells in the midst of the people and Yahweh declaring that he only resides in heaven; Yahweh commanding Passover to be celebrated by all at Jerusalem and Yahweh commanding it to be celebrated at each person’s home; Yahweh commanding that animals for consumption must be ritually sacrificed and Yahweh commanding that they don’t have to be sacrificed ritually, etc. ***one must conclude that Yahweh is being used by these authors, each with their own contrary views and beliefs as a spokesperson for each of these authors’ agendas.*** These are all the personal, and competing, views, theological beliefs, and religious systems of our biblical authors. And this is only the tip of the iceberg." *"Studying the Bible"* - Dr Steven DiMattei *"Contradictions in the Bible | Identified verse by verse and explained using the most up-to-date scholarly information about the Bible, its texts, and the men who wrote them"* -- by Dr. Steven DiMattei

In reality gods don't say anything, because they are imaginary. But certainly it sounds like you imagine a god says things. Imagination is not reality

The message of the cross is what matters: The hero dies for the villain. Jesus Christ died for the world. The scapegoat in this case was innocent, whereby in every other world religion, the scapegoat is guilty. Death is put to death by the ultimate display of love: The spotless lamb of God dies to live. Everything in this video could be true, and this would change nothing about what the cross teaches us. Don’t make the genetic fallacy. This has nothing to do with the philosophical and theological ramifications of the cross: Love goes against the decay of this universe. We will all live again. All will be resurrected so that God will be All in All.

28:00 The problem is that with a non-theistic system, you have no good and no evil. In fact, without the transcendental, you have no objective anything, because you are bound to an inescapable self. So while some good points might have been made in this video, the biggest fallacy made in this video is the genetic fallacy as well as not realising that without a personal God, we have no access to the building blocks we need to even make judgements about the biblical text.

The Bible was written to preserve Jewish identity. It's Israel's national myth just as Shintoism is for Japan or Zoroastrianism for old Persia. Every group of people in the world, even today, have a story that is used to preserve national identity.
