Unfortunately, its true. While I don't really like being a critical fella, especially to another team since I'm a Nuggets fan, I followed the Bulls quite well cause of D Rose. Tom had them playing great basketball, and with Fred it seems like they don't know 'who they are' for lack of better words.

+Luis Munoz I think it's a process dude.I'm not defending Hoiberg but Thibs sets play is really boring. You won't see McDermott and other rookies to be playing more than 12 minutes. I think Bulls need to rebuild around Butler, McDermott, Niko and Portis.

+Luis Munoz Honestly, this looks good as a highlight video. I saw way too many games in that era where the offense looked horrendous and we'd go 4-5 minutes without a single bucket. I think the players need time to get out of the previous mindset and into the one that Fred's trying to instill. We also need to make a couple moves to bring in better personnel for the new system.
@Jman511x

+Pan6100 It was always a chemistry problem with the Bulls, I think their offense was bad at times because their players couldn't stay on the court to play together. The whole time Thibs was there the team was never healthy. Rose, Noah, Boozer, or Butler were always hurt, you could blame that on Thibs because of his minutes use or maybe just bad luck. You can't become a great team unless you're healthy, I believe that if the Bulls could have stayed healthy a full season they would have won a championship under Thibs by now.

one of the reasons thibs may not have been considered an offensive-minded coach, is while he ran decent-to-great sets near the beginning of the game or even 1st half, come 4th quarter in almost any game, he often stopped being fancy on offense, and defaulted to really simple sets repeatedly; simple pnr's with rose on offense, with an emphasis on stingy defense. if thibs' going to theoretically coach the knicks exactly the way he coached the bulls, you're not going to get many beautiful triangle-offense-influenced sets in the 4th when the game's on the line.

+BBALLBREAKDOWN Obviously he would build the system around his ideals but also work around the players on the knicks roster. Fancy offense for a defense minded coach will make playing that stingy defense in the 4th more difficult. Do you think the Knicks would really flourish with their current roster under Thibs? I'd love a hypothetical video like that. Showing what the Knicks players could do if they were to play the triangle well.

Thanks Coach Nick for another interesting and insightful video. I always enjoy them and they enable me to understand strategy and gain a much deeper appreciation of basketball. I have a question in which I would be interested in your thoughts. The aspects of the triangle you highlighted make it seem as though it would completely destroy the rest of the NBA. To quote at 4:45 "How can any defense possibly defend this?". While you make this claim, how do you reconcile the fact that the Bulls ranked 24th and 27th in offensive efficiency in 2012-13 and 13-14, but were 5th in 2011-12 (before rose was injured) and 10th in 2014-15 (when Butler made his mark and the Bulls acquired Gasol)? Doesn't this suggest talent is the most important, more so over the type of system being used?
@bballbreakdown
@bballbreakdown 8 жыл бұрын
It is hard to reconcile, you are right. I think a big part was the roster turnover year after year, plus the injuries. There was never much stability to grow as an offensive unit. Also, they only ran the triangle somewhere around 30% of the time, which I believe makes it hard because the offense is a little schizophrenic. The Bulls and Lakers committed to it all the time...

Spurs Motion STRONG is a great way to distract the defense BEFORE transforming into Triangle Offense = the 4-Man who helps set the Double-Staggered Screen fades-out/ flares-out to the WING SPOT after setting the last Pindown Screen. Center runs back across the lane a 2nd time, Block-to-Block into his original spot.

This just made me miss good old Noah, a lot of plays from when he was carrying the team, to me he is 2-3 times better than Pau, I remember Lakers fans telling me and other Bulls fans that after 1season we would be sick of him and it would be more than half are, also Noah gets injured now the Bulls have gone 4-13, he plays hard, never quits and is the best passing big man in the NBA, if he doesn't stay with the Bulls he should sign with the GSW, he would be a perfect fit with them.

Coach since twolves just hired thibs do you think its a good fit? I worry about his tendency to overplay guys specially rubio who is injury prone. Another thing is that the triangle if i understand correctly doesn't really take full advantage of Rubio's skillset. He's a ball dominant pass 1st PG with very limited offense. I could be wrong. Or unless thibs knocks some sense into him and he starts to shoot well.

Thanks Coach. Great vid as always. Much as I like Thibs, I'm not sure he's the right Coach for the Knicks. While he can run the triangle (as you demonstrated) there's still the very real issues you brought up earlier in the vid. If we assume Thibs would coach the Knicks in pretty much the same fashion he did the Bulls, then I don't really see any benefit to hiring him. You would still be stuck w/ an offensively limited team whose starting line up is overplayed, and whose rooks are underdeveloped due to lack of playing time (Poor Porzingis would never see the floor again. he's playing about 28 min currently. He'd be lucky to see 10-15 on a Thibodeau team) Melo's getting up there in age and knee injuries. His body can't take the strain. The only improvement I see is in their defense. The Knicks FO are the masters of the Poorly Thought Out decision, but I hope Phil (or someone) can sit everyone down and actually THINK THINGS THROUGH. Also, PJax may want to expand his horizons a little bit when it comes to offense schemes. I know he loves the triangle, but let's remember that Jackson's two biggest triangle success stories were teams lead by (and stacked with) HOF players. Noone on the Knicks is that good.

Can't defend against it perfectly when it has the right pieces because it creates slashing lanes, Curling lanes r one on one opportunities with GREAT ONE ON ONE PLAYERS. IN honesty.. It's basic basketball at its finest... This offense obliterated the "Pick and Roll" quite easily.

+a week ago Depends on what you run for personnel for defense. If they can't communicate well and see where players are going to be, then the triangle just does its thing. Its not just one a man thing. Its a concerted effort to stop the ball from moving and flowing at each junction.

The triangle isn't even intended to be a super high powered GSW type of offense in the first place, the point of the triangle is to take the talent that you do have and if they lack in certain aspects of offense, the triangle puts them in position to maximize their strengths. Also it is a time controlling offense so if you execute correctly, this offense will give you a great building block to start every defensive possession. The 90's Bulls were never the highest scoring team, and neither was the 2000's Lakers but in the playoffs, the triangle got them the baskets they needed and because the clock was being controlled there defense was that much stronger leading to championships. Perfect for Thibs if he can turn around the Knicks. They need more hustle role players like Lance Thomas who can play multiple positions and GUARD multiple positions. Build a team of hustle players around Porzingis, find an elite point guard (Westbrook 2017), and they become a contender

Carmelo and Porzingis will both have a field day with Thibs at the helm. They'll get so many minutes and touches at the post. Knicks also have more personnel suited for the Triangle than the Bulls. If problems will arise, it will be more mental and psychological. I don't know how the Knicks especially Carmelo wouldl react under a tough disciplinarian. Also will there be a power struggle between Phil and Thibs?

This could be a problem with Melo, but the biggest thing is to make sure he doesn't play guys more than 36 mins a game..

I BEG Thibs to come back. Fire the front office. Even though they've been decimated by injury this year, they've been lost all season. When they had injuries with Thibs...the bench players really stepped up. Now these guys are regressing.

id rather have a guidance counsellor than a good offensive coach as a head coach. coach that understands people and what makes them tick.

i'm a bulls fan, but i will root for thibs no matter where he goes, even if it's to the knicks. he's such a great coach. the bulls' front office is trash for firing him.

Wished the Bull never fired Thibs, i personally like good defensive coaches but i think his rotations needed a lot of room to improve on because he played his role players for too long all the time and you could see it in the play-offs.

I will counter this argument by stating that 1. guys are looking for the 'home-run' pass so often that they are frequently missing the right pass. this video accentuates the times when it works, but it's still clear when good pass opportunities are being overlooked. and 2. there are many instances of opportunities of cuts that will wield buckets that are not realized by the players. I still love Thibs as a coach overall, but billing him as a both sides of the ball guy is over selling him. I understand that the guys on the court are like 60% responsible for the problems I mentioned, but truly good offensive coaching takes care of that

As a Knicks fan the moment the Bulls fired thibs I wanted him to replace Derek fisher lol. I've watched most of the Knicks game and it seems like fisher makes little impact on the game and his reluctancy to play young players frustrates me.
