ATV Hunting Australia - Thermal Shooting Pigs, Feral Cats, Foxes & Hares

On this trip I was out hunting and shooting again on the ATV with thermal equipment. Great to get a few miles under the wheels on the quad, explore a new area and shoot some feral animals for the farmer.
Feral pig numbers are on the rise again with the rain and abundance of feed. Catch 22 trying to shoot them as it's extremely difficult to see them in the 1m + long grass. Even with thermal hunting equipment you can only achieve so much.
This little swift overnight hunt was into a new area for me. Well worth the effort and it will be a very rewarding location with a huge spectrum of target species.

Feral cats are so destructive, good job mate. Without their control there'd be no natives smaller than a wombat left.
@FkRoP
@FkRoP 3 жыл бұрын
@@markheller76 It's the other way around. Feral cat are almost inconsequential to humans. However, have a look at the information regarding feral cats on the Australian Government's site for the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. Here are some summaries of their impact to our native wildlife.
@FkRoP
@FkRoP 3 жыл бұрын
Feral cats threaten the survival of over 100 native species in Australia. They have caused the extinction of some ground-dwelling birds and small to medium-sized mammals. They are a major cause of decline for many land-based endangered animals such as the bilby, bandicoot, bettong and numbat. Many native animals are struggling to survive so reducing the number killed by this introduced predator will allow their populations to grow. Feral cats can carry infectious diseases which can be transmitted to native animals, domestic livestock and humans.

You can't tell some people Steve........ I'm sure the science and extinction statistics are incorrect........NOT - Choot the feral cats. It's the best conservation as a hunter you will ever do.

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Onya mate . I was raised on a wheat , sheep , rice farm near Deniliquin nsw . Shot more things from swallows around the sheds , to ducks , crows , galahs , rabbits , foxes , roos , emus , feral cats n dogs than one would like to think of . Currently , i live in the lockyer valley in SE Qld . Im celebrating my pet hate of Blackheaded minors with a low powered air rifle . Any animal not meant to be there in my book is a noxious pest . Even geckos are on the hit list . I pop the occasional wallaby off the verandah , but only for dog food . Shooting for me wasnt fun , it was , and still remains a job of vermin eradication . Like you , i rarely miss . Ive , quite a few times , embarrassed my city friends that range shoot in the field environment . A farmers son with a gun is worth 20 city slicker enthusiasts . Its a proven fact . If i was more financial , id happily sponsor via patreon . Please accept my comments as support and approval of your great efforts . Cheers mate .

If you want to consider a long range caliber 6 mm with a 108 gr or 115 gr ELD Match will kill every single thing in Australia except Buffalo 😅almost no recoil and eats the wind . I have killed hogs the same size and much bigger in South Africa over 600 to 800 meters. You want the speed and no recoil and the bonus is cheap to shoot and than it bucks the wind which is the biggest problem. 6 mm Creedmoor

@EDGE of the OUTBACK 6.5 is and l do agree with you but it lacks the speed. Speed is the big killer on problem animals you want to make big holes and drop them where they stand the bigger the bullet the more difficult it is to open and more recoil as you know. It is you choice of course but as l suggests contact me l have been doing this for 33 years and l am sure the 2 of us will have a lot to talk about 😉 And take my word you want to consider coming to South Africa for a hunt 😅😅👍🏻

The PRC isn't a slouch mate. I'm pushing 147gr ELD-M's which have a very high BC at 3011fps. 6mm Creed would be nice too mind you but the 6BR has much less bark, I'd maybe gain 100-150fps but burn more powder. There's no wrong answer with cartridges, it's all good fun.

@EDGE of the OUTBACK Definitely if you get 3011fps out of your 6.5 than you're good to go and yes there is no one caliber for every thing 😉 Your BR is up for the job for sure. Let me now if you decide on a scope for the long range shooting. Cheers 🍻

I'm running a Althon Cronus BTR Gen2 4.5-29x56 FFP on my 6.5PRC. It's excellent and I'll chuck it up there against anything else other than maybe the Kahles FFP scopes. Have been very happy optically and mechanically with the adjustments. It's a heavy tank though 😞

Probably because if left to roam outside they can cause a huge amount of damage being a small predator.

@@jamesjames4844 I'll ask you one question. Are you an Australian. I'm guessing you are not as all these animals I'm shooting are for pest control. They are introduced pest species which don't belong in my country.

I’m in Scotland and a decent sized hare averages about seven to eight pounds but some areas hold bigger hares about nine pounds but they don’t look as big as the ones you were shooting

I'll have to take some scales and check for you. Have never actually weighed one but I do know some are bigger than a fox if you line them up.

Why are hares considered pests?
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK

They are introduced feral animals. Some people don't mind them. Others like this property, the hares damage newly sprouting green crops by pulling out the shoots roots and all.

Please have a Google on foxes and feral cats in Australia. They are a huge threat to our native animals, there is nothing "stupid" in the greater picture of trying to stop native animal extinctions. The cold of winter HAS killed more mice than these introduced predators ever will. The mice are pretty much gone now after a 6-8 month plague. Yet leaving foxes and cats to continue killing our defenseless natives is not an option.
