Great engines in those for sure. Had an 86 pick up and a few cars with the 22R and they were tanks. The body could be falling apart and beat up from years of heavy abuse and those engines keep pushing. I remember one of them getting close to 400,000 miles and still ran strong for its size. I sold that car and warned the owners it needs new shocks before going 75 on our windy interstate. They didn’t listen and rolled it on a big corner. I took regular care with oil changes and such, so I’m sure that engine had a life still.

You don’t even have to maintain them, my teacher gave his son his 90s Toyota pickup for yard work and he hasn’t changed the oil on a truck with over 400,000 miles on it in like 50k miles. They’re just bulletproof angry little 4 cylinders that refuse to die. Only thing that kills them is the box frame rusting in half. I can literally smell the interior. Reminds me of good memories with my dad…just needs a pack of Marlboro 100’s on the dash and it’s my dads old truck, we always called it the blue goose. Thanks for the walk down memory lane brother. I needed this today.

Toyota is world renowned for its toughness. Best deal on a vehicle I ever had was a 98 camry I purchased from within my family for $200. It had 100.1k miles on the clock when my mom drove it home. Between both of us we drove it 11 years and clocked an additional 140k miles on it before the engine let go. Sold it for scrap and got $215 for it (very low scrap prices at that time) I consider that to be a considerable profit given the years of reliability given.

I got my dream Toyota pickup, started out with a beat up red automatic single cab, now I've got a clean original paint, black, extra cab, 5 speed manual, 2wd, 22re Toyota pickup, with AC and cruise control. I also recently installed a smart stereo and 6.5 inch kickers, literally my dream daily, just a few more things and it'll be perfect 😍

I really love how you cover newer cars (like the Tokyo drift cars I like to call them), that I don’t really understand, but also in my ballpark of older cars and trucks, especially work trucks (like this one here)

I got my dads old ‘89 Toyota pickup with the 4speed manual and 22RE and it still runs pretty well despite some electrical issues.

I had a 1999 Hilux , buy far my favorite truck. I took really good care of it and the best feeling it gave me was it starting up super fast. You literally just had to flick the key for 1/4 of a second and it started every time. Even faster if the engine was warm. I've seen people put it through hell , crazy people, no maintenance , no care , the thing just starts up and goes. You ask them why do you treat it like that and they'll just say " it's a Toyota".

My grandfather had the same exact truck. Same year and model. We did the math, and he had driven that thing around the world 3 times without any issues he couldn’t fix in the driveway. Such a sturdy little truck. Wish they still made em like that.

Something about old Toyotas gives them a certain charm. I have a relative that still has their o.g Celica Supra from their high school days and babied it. Old cars are like time machines if you grew up with them. I hope gas engines won't be completely outlawed by the time my kids get old enough to drive so they can experience what it's like to drive a car from an Era when there weren't cars that have the tech built into them like newer models do today.

I would buy that in a moment without hesitation. I had a 4wheeldrive 1984 Toyota Truck that actually almost made it to 500000 miles on the original engine and transmission. Amazing craftsmanship and reliability.
