The CAL pads on these really made a huge difference. They're semi over-ear with much softer pads that let the pair sit stably on my head, really great when on a walk. Now they're actually a comfortable portable hp. The stock pads had annoyingly volumes going up and down too depending on the seal and proximity to the ears when moving. That's totally gone. The CALs are a bit loose fitting on here, but I'm quite ok with that. Sound-wise CAL pads are very close to stock and no worse either. There's maybe a very slight boost in the lows, but I'm really not sure. Maybe it's just a better seal than before when in traffic. Really don't know what Audeze was thinking putting such pads on this good a headphone. The looks, I guess.

Nice job! I gave 'em a rave review a while back here, for a good reason. But, they are kinda "sound first"... Comfort and isolation come second. Sound-wise these are a wonder.

chuckolatte Agree. I got iSine20 and I like their sound. The details on them it’s fantastic. A bit too much treble. Wish they were around the ear headphones as I’m not used to in ear , but they are super comfortable. Better than Shure 846, IE800, and other over the ear headphones. Best thing about them, they come with a Cipher cable that has an amp built in. Really practical for on the go.

Thanks for reviewing these. I've been curious about them since they launched, and even though like you I have larger-than-average ears and wear glasses (and thus don't usually like on-ears), I still really want to try them. Your review just got me more excited. Think I'll finally bite the bullet in the next few months and give them a go.

Just got them today. In terms of their sound I like what I'm hearing. However unlike what most reviews claimed, mine seem to be pretty tough to drive. If I plug them into my phone it is really quite and doesnt sound great at all. I will need to invest into a portable amp (mine died years ago)... its gonna be worth it though, been wanting a pair for travel and on the go and this is it! When I plug them into an desktop amp like Aune X1s they sound just amazing. They seem to be on the darker side so I don't think they are going to be fatiguing for longer listening sessions which is great for me. Anyways thanks for the review.. it really helped me make the decision. As Tyler stated these truely are a sports car for my head. I also have the cypher cable so I'll be borrowing an apple product soon to see if its gonna be a big upgrade.

One negative thing I need to mention about the Sines... When you're stationary, they are great: flat, punchy, energetic etc. But when I take a brisk walk they move around my head lots, as any hp would. But these are VERY specific about placement. Try and push them against your head - they get very quiet. Or try and shake your head while wearing 'em... The sound goes on and off. For an example, If you bend your head to the left the right channel goes way quiet. That small closed cup must be the reason, me thinks.

Sine it's a pretty good on ear. At the end I sold it because I like more my Sennheiser HD25: it's lighter, isolate better, much better bass response, much cheaper price. Sine has a better midrange clarity and bigger sound. There is something I get with dynamic driver that planar does not give to me. Anyway I suggest to get the Beyerdynamic DT150 (get also DT100 velour pads) it's pretty incredibile for price/performance.

I bet, The DT150 is not V-shaped, It's a midrange monster with a crazy soundstage. The bass is punchy but seems a bit boomy. Very High Fidelity Cans. For 125€? Yes please.

These look beautiful and it Sounds like these might be superior sounding to my Sennheiser Momentum 2.0. But the mediocre comfort, lack of foldability, and the fact that it leaks a little sound put these out of the running for me.

Metal - I’ve been looking for a solid performer for the purposes of listening to metal as this is what I listen to a lot at home. I’ve never owned any planars but I’m very intrigued by the Sines and the EL-8s. Either of these can be had these days for a decent price if one exercises a little patience. Am I on the right track with these from Audeze or do you have a better recommendation? I’m not opposed to on-ear so that’s not an issue. I also don’t mind a headphone with a smidge of flavor but I do also enjoy accuracy as well. Keep up the great work! I only recently discovered you and Z and now I can’t get enough! I try and stay away from this community as much as possible unless I’m ready to spend money, haha.

Not the first on-ear planar. My first planar, the Yamaha yh-1 (late 70's) was a semi-open, on-ear headphone.

Do you mean YH3? I think I tried those after making this review, so yes you are correct
@rubenremus5649
@rubenremus5649 6 жыл бұрын
I believe the YH-3 was a smaller, cheaper (later?) version of the yh1. The yh1 was first released with a different model version (I believe it was something like HP-1). I bought the original HP1 when it was first released. Their weak point was the ball-and-socket joint that gave the cups their adjustment range. Sat on the suckers and snap! So I purchased the YH-1 which eventually suffered the same fate... (I still have one of them somewhere, and they still work!) As in the case of the Sine, Yamaha went to an outside designer (in this case the Italian designer Mario Bellini).

Am I missing something ? Many reviews of the Sine mention satisfying bass levels but I can’t hear it, even when using a Mojo. The bass is there but never does it reach the “skull rattling, distortion free lows” mentioned by some reviewers...
@metal571
@metal571 6 жыл бұрын
+Dipnala Tamzil the Cipher cable adds a noticeable bass bump to these so using it analog, directly into any headphone amp will sound different. The bass is not strong or boosted, it's a flat line like other planars. The dynamics are very good, but it's not loud.

Being a sound engineer, I own K701, Sine and 400s at the moment. All are fantastic cans but be careful. The K7 and the Sine share the same sound signature. Open airey. breathy mids that don't pierce at volume. The 400s not so much. If like me, you like your mids tame and recessed enough to play loudly without the conversation voice frequency too up front that make us wince due to our ears being fine tuned the this range you won't like to 400s as much. Mine are on eBay as I speak. I loved them until I got my Sines and K7's and really got down and dirty with the musical chair quick headphone switching this afternoon trying to figure out the keepers. Other than the 800S, I have not heard a consumer phone as good, both open and closed. On top of that, they are perfect for double use for mix and mastering reference, and at the same time great to listen to. That's the duo for me....I listened to the 553 at your guidance but ....meh..I might have had my opinion a bit colored because several years ago I saved for a set of K550's, got em in like a kid on xmas and put em on for ten minutes before rushing them back to the seller. The SINE+K701 is where I'm at now, with the 7 every so slightly topping the Sine due to the open space and layering in terms of goosebumpness. Whats rarely discussed is how most quality phones sound delicious at gentle listening levels. The question is what happens when you give the phones a solid nudge? Do you wince? A keeper headphone must be neutral but also have that crystal glaze without that fatiguing shrill, that's also part of the puzzle for me. Before I buy or try any phone I go to your site because I agree with most of your assessments. Thanks for doing what you do as it help us weed through the jungle and hopefully lessen the casualties of the headphone death spiral. You help us understand WHY we like what we do and thats the key.

Ozma actually i've had this headphone for a month already and have to say portable headphone amp is mandatory. Fiio x5 or x3 just can't deliver enough juice. Using them with fiio a5 gives significant improvements.

@anemoia8010 6 жыл бұрын
I can agree that it's not possible to get the most out of them without a proper amp. But in terms of loudness, I find the x5 to be absolutely sufficient. Perhaps I just like to listen to music at lower volumes. Are you happy with your a5? I might consider buying one because I was looking for a portable amp anyways. :)

Ozma yes a5 is a very good amp and will drive sine-s to its full potential. Also i have upgraded my fiio x3 ii to x5 ii and i have to say you get noticeably better bass response, soundstage and detail retrival. i am running x5 line out to a5. The only downside is that it's bulky for a portable use :)

metal571 I will give it another listen. I had a LCD-3 and never enjoyed it. Have a NAD HP-50 and loving it a lot. It's really sort of underpriced with the current market standards! Now I am looking for an upgrade with better imaging. It does not re-produce height very well. Its obvious when you listen to Chesky's headphones demonstration album. And maybe something with extended bass below 50Hz and slightly more openness.
@metal571

HP50 measures so well. I'm really looking for one of those to review since it meets the Harman target response almost exactly. And BTW didn't mean to be harsh - but compare this review to my LCD3 review that I just did recently on my channel and you'll see I agree with the muddy bass and lack of detail. The SINE is so different, however the on ear design can definitely be uncomfortable for many.

Why against Apple, out of curiosity?

+Brad Sevy I just need the customizability of the Android OS. Main phone is a Pixel XL right now and loving it. Basically it's an iPhone for Android people, still maintaining that customizability and a fast update schedule

metal571 Before my son was born, I was all about that root and ROM life. Despite being an Apple employee I had tons of Android phones. Tinkering with kernels, flashing basebands, etc. Then comes my son. Oh how it changed.

Brad Sevy yeah I used to root and install custom ROMs all the time but not anymore. I still prefer the freedom though to get things to look the way I want that Android has always had without really rooting. Lots of those old custom ROM features are now in stock Android which is great

*_I just picked these up for my teenage daughter and she actually prefers these over a lot of other higher priced cans. Much love from beautiful Bangor, Maine where recreational marijuana is legal, home prices are still some of the lowest in the entire nation, auto insurance is the lowest in the entire nation and the scenery is absolute nirvana._*

i have magni/modi. How would you compare Beyerdynamic DT 880 and AKG K702 to HD 650? Thanks!
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
+Sasa Nikic both brighter, DT880 bring the brightest of the 3. 702 also has a 2k shout. 702 has the widest stage with the most imprecise imaging, DT880 had a slightly less wide stage with the most precise imaging of the 3.

Thank you very much! Do you think there could there is a difference between 250 Ohm and 600 Ohm Beyer?
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
+Sasa Nikic Yeah 600 ohm is capable of faster transients. The DT880 600 ohm sounds quite a bit like the HD 800 for cheaper.

Is this something you've done? I was thinking of getting a bigger/softer pad for these but didn't want to experiment without talking to someone first.

they are crap. with Iphone at max volume still sound too low and there is no way of getting them any louder. simply not loud enough. any mini headphones sound much louder than these.

ChessGuru I have the same problem, I just can't drive them with any mobile device. The sound is so thin, they are harder to drive than my 770 80 ohm and my hd25 70 ohm.. Not sure if we got faulty units or whats going on. And I paid full retail price for these

They certainly need more power than most smartphones can provide. I'd recommend looking for a portable amplifier or a digital audio player. FiiO has relatively affordable ones.
