The way most people interpret Snafu not saying goodbye is him not wanting to disturb Sledge's sleep. Just a good night's sleep would've been a commodity back in the pacific, and Snafu respected that.

There is an automatic nostalgia with Band Of Brothers. And it begins with the color gradient they used. It was like looking at those old pictures. The score was epic and the places we were already familiar with. That's why the BOB stands out. There's a lot about The Pacific that most Americans were not used to. First, they are Marines...not soldiers. Their terminology was different as well as their uniforms. The names of the battles were not as recognizable nor were the ways in which the enemy fought. And the environment in Europe compared to the Islands in the Pacific cannot be more stark. Jungle warfare is absolutely hell on earth. It's unimaginable to many of us today as we sit on our sofa or in our big soft lazy boy chairs in our air-conditioned or heated homes as we follow these characters along 10 episodes. I am an Army veteran of 8 years and I wholeheartedly respect what our grandfather's did during WWII...especially the Marines in the Pacific.

Fun fact, Eugene never hunted again. His dad got him into bird watching, which was a hobby of his for the rest of his life.

A truly magnificent movie about men coming home and struggling to fit in with post-war America was "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946). It was quite contemporary. Brilliant everything. It won 7 Academy Awards.

Actually Sid Phillips told a funny story about his Australian girlfriend from the Melbourne episode. I think her name was actually Shirley and they had a strictly platonic relationship unlike what is shown in the series. Years later Sid's wife called him at work to tell him that Shirley was visiting the states with her family (she married an Australian Spitfire pilot). Sid was confused and said Shirley who? To which his wife replied you know... Shirley. So they stayed in Mobile and in that time Shirley's son fell in love with Sid's daughter and eventually they both got married. So Sid and Shirley ended up sharing grandchildren after all.

I like that moment between the cabbie and Leckie where you see the veterans of Europe and the Pacific coming back together in the states and the respect between them despite fighting half a world apart. Especially the army acknowledging how hard the marines had it. It's rough seeing Sledge breaking down after he returns, wondering why he made it back when so many didn't. I'll never know what that's like, but I guess when you think about it, so many people went off to war and died as we saw sometimes as young as 17, even 19, 20, 22......like they had a childhood and got through school, and never got to live any sort of life after that. How many never even had a girlfriend? How many died childless as only sons, the end of their whole family line? I mean you can question why you made it back, but I think if those kids could speak from the grave, if anything they'd be pissed if they saw the guys lucky enough to survive wasting the lives they never had a chance to live. Seems like the best way to honor the fallen if for the survivors to live the kind of life they died to protect. I'm glad Sledge figured that out in the end. As for Leckie, I mean history is history, but Vera ain't got shit on Stella. Very just seems like she saw Leckie as a "good enough" option. I mean I get being pissed at what Stella did, but I also understand where she was coming from. Her parents had so little, and were never able to have as many kids as they wanted. To be sitting there planning and hoping for him to return and marry their daughter and give them grandkids, only to hear he got blown up on some island....she was protecting them from that. But cmon, like she's gonna say no if he shows up in one piece and the war is over.

More than anything, what helped my father-in-law get past his experience in the war was the woman he married and the family he supported. He raised 3 children. I believe this was the best therapy for àll soldiers returning from war.

I believe one of the things that helped the men returning from WW2 was the fact they returned in units. The soldiers that returned from Vietnam came back one at a time, a support system just wasn't there.😢

Those were Leckie's parents. He mentioned them briefly in the Melbourne episode. Talked about how he was the youngest of many children and how they have lost a few kids and his dad was crippled in the head because of it. Like when his dad was so awkward dropping him off in the beginning. Emotionally closed off to him to avoid the pain he already had to endure. My guess is they just already accepted he was going to die, didn't expect him to be back and used his room as storage.. I hate to break it to you but Stella wasn't real. That love story was just added to the show. Didn't actually happen in real life haha
@DaveAlkema
@DaveAlkema 25 күн бұрын
While Stella wasn't real, Leckie did have a few different girlfriends while in Melbourne. One of them was named Sheila, which is probably who Stella was based off from. It wasn't the love story that was shown in the show, though, more like FWB.

Sledge's book is considered one of the greatest combat memoirs ever written. He wrote China Marine about his time in China after the war. Masters Of The Air is based on the great book of the same name by Donald Miller. It is excellent and the tone is more like The Pacific. I would strongly recommend it. I enjoy your commentary as it is genuine and designed for anything. As a young person you have a good understanding of this time and history.

This episode is just so tragic. You can see on Eugene’s face and through his actions how much he is struggling being back. Always thinking about the events he went through over the past year, never being comfortable in his own skin. Something thousands of Marines struggled with when they came home.

KILLED IT BRO. You should watch interviews with Eugene Sledge. He has several from the 80s-90s where he vividly describes his experiences, which makes you realize how accurate this show was. His wife was also interviewed several times and she said he lived with the war for the rest of his life, never a day he didn’t think about it. He had a very strong will that kept him moving forward.

The show does Leckie some favors. From his book, he was a more chaotic and roguish person than his onscreen counterpart, but still very determined and strong. Whereas Sledge gets underplayed by the show. He wrote his book more methodically, so gives a deeper sense of the exact experiences.

4:45 “Japan’s Longest Day” (1967) was based on the book of the same title written by The Pacific War Research Society. It’s meticulously researched - definitive, first-hand account of the 24 hours leading to Japan’s surrender in WW2. Sadly out-of-print book but there’s the newly released - Japan's Longest Day: A Graphic Novel About the End of WWII: Intrigue, Treason and Emperor Hirohito's Fateful Decision to Surrender (by award-winning manga artist: Yukinobu Hoshino). The Pacific War Research Society was a Japanese group made up of 14 members who devoted eight years work to the research of Japan’s Longest Day. They also compiled - The Day Man Lost: Hiroshima, 6 August 1945. Both books are fascinating and educational and essential reading.

Those are leckies real parents and to explain their relationship before the war one of his bothers passed away and his farther never seemed to recover. Seems alot of people miss this, but i believe one of the reason SNAFU doesnt wake up sledge is in the words of one veteran “the Japanese killed sleep” so to see him peacefully sleeping probably for the last time he decided to let him rest in peace. Speaking of Australian sweethearts Sids actually travelled to the USA to meet him and became friends with his family and in a funny twist one of sids daughters would go on to marry one of his sweethearts sons. The scene with Eugene and his dad going hunting basically played out like that, it was his father’s recommendation that instead of shooting birds he study them and this prompted him to go into biology and later being a teacher One thing the show got kinda of wrong was leckie losing faith and somewhat regaining it, but in his own words the war did nothing but strengthened it. Little fun fact that pipe the actor for Eugene sledge is smoking was the real sledges pipe it was gifted to him by the family for portraying their farther greatly and still has to this day kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g8l7iZeB1sfUf2w.htmlsi=0LC_rC72rd3VrNk7 i highly recommend this video its like “we stand alone together” for the TPO but also involving BOB vets talking about their experiences coming home and adjusting back to civilian life. Weather you react to it or not is up to you but still i highly suggest this video if you want to see more of these vets that have now passed on

It's been a pleasure! I've grown accustomed to first watching an episode of a documentary and then watching your take on it late in the evening almost every night! I hope this becomes something that you look into doing more often, If you are interest in another good WWII documentary, one to check out is BBC's World at War. It was made during the 70s, so it had the advantage of having so many of the people involved still alive (and so young) being able to contribute to the show, I remember my Dad watching it back when it first aired because he sat 10 -year-old me down with him to watch the Final Solution episode so I could learn the truth from a good source and have him nearby for questions and support.

Here are some movies and tv series to put on your watch list. Masters Of The Air. Yes derfinately a step down from The Pacific and BoB. But still very well done. Greyhound. Written and produced by Tom Hanks as well as starring him. It is based on a fictional novel by C.S. Forester, but it is as close to Bob and The Pacific in tone as you are likely to get. Generation War. Often misleadingly called the German Band Of Brothers. The story of a group of young German people who go through WWII. Generation Kill. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 seen through the experiences of a group of Recon Marines. The tip of the tip of the spear. Based on a series of articles written for rolling stone magazine by an embedded war correspondant. As close to the feeling of Band Of Brothers as you are likely to get. The Best Years Of Our Lives. Made by William Wyler when he returned from WWII. Tells the story of returning veterans. A double amputee sailor, a Marine sargeant and a B-17 Bombadier. One of the greatest WWII movies ever made. Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags Of Our Fathers. Clint Eastwood's double whammy about the battle of Iwo told from both sides. Hacksaw Ridge. Shot in Australia and starring several Australian actors you might recognize. Tells the story of Medic Desmond Doss who was awarded the Congrwessional Medal Of Honor following his heroic actions on Guadalcanal. Directed by Mel Gibson and starring Andrew Garfield.

The train ride depicted here didn't happen, unfortunately. They did it to give the marines a proper send-off. Eugene was sent to China to process surrendering Japanese and stabilize the region for another year. The guys there were so exhausted and fed up that they almost mutinied.
