Losing the company’s Captain “Skipper” would be like Easy company losing Captain Winters.

The Pacific is criminally underrated

Completely agree. Had it been the first in the trilogy, everything would be compared to IT. It’s better than BoB in many ways.

@@cpj83 Yeah but also it reflects the general public’s lesser view of the Pacific theater vs Europe. Hitler has always been the focus of WWII so the Pacific is oddly less interesting to many.

A historian described the war in western Europe as a boxing match and the Pacific as a gutter knife fight. Very apt.

The scene with the bunker is 1 to 1 straight from the book, right down to the guys running out with their pants falling down. The only things they fudged a little are that Sledge shot the guy nearly point blank in the gut and saw the look of agony on his face, and thats why he felt so crushed and depleted; And they fudged the incident with the prying out of the teeth, that happened on another day and was far more brutal in the book. The soldiers inside survived because Japanese pillboxes were built with concrete partitions, so the grenades they dropped in didn't kill everyone. They also hit it with tank fire, a flamethrower, and more grenades, and there were still living guys inside there after all that. R.V. Burgin detailed the same incident in his own book.

You are only on 7. Hold your judgement about "better" until the end. You will ultimately conclude that a comparison can't be made between the two, no more than the actual two theaters of war were comparable. The war in the Pacific was an extermination mission not a battle between armies. 22,000 Japanese on an island, Marines shell, bomb, stab, shoot, burn, bury bludgeon from one end of the Island to the other, and 200 Japanese are captured. An extermination.... at the Japanese's request! No eloquent translations of a German Generals speaking to his men equivalent in The Pacific. It was, as Sledge said in his book: "Two Scorpions in a bottle trying to kill each other." Two different wars. You will see this well explained in Episode 10 of the Pacific in a very artful way (no spoilers). You will conclude that it is best not to make the comparison at all.

America and the West were raised on stories of heroism in the European theater of war. They're familiar with D-Day, the Battle of the Buldge, the Blitz on London, and Salerno. As bad as those battles were, Americans and the West know very little about what the Marines faced the--dark and horrific conditions they endured. The Pacific shows the cruel and darkness of lost humanity the Marines faced on a daily basis...and America was not prepared for this story.

When it comes to the Pacific war, many Americans are familiar with Iwo Jima because of the famous flag raising picture.

Pearl Harbor is celebrated every year on Dec 7th but Bataan is never celebrated. The defenders of Bataan and Death March survivors were one of the first U.S. armed forces to experience the inhumanity and horrors as “captives” under the Japanese. Some had to endure the unimaginable on those Hell ships, which is also relatively unknown. The Death March survivors are all gone but their courage and incredible bravery and sacrifice should never be forgotten - just like so many hard-fought battles that happened in the Pacific. I totally agree that much of the Pacific Theater still hasn’t received enough recognition.

While I agree that the war in Europe is better known and remembered, it's not true that Americans "know very little" about the Pacific theater. I grew up in the 60's and 70's, my father was part of the Greatest Generation, who was in the Pacific and Korean War. Believe me, we kids of my generation were familiar with Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. There were even movies (some mediocre) about those campaigns. It's the later generations who know very little about the Pacific. I think even some young Europeans didn't know there was a war in the Pacific.

The Japanese force on Peleliu numbered over 12,000. Only around 300 were taken alive as prisoners, the rest fought to the death, as was the case on most islands that were invaded by the US. Captain Haldane (Ack Ack) went to scout Japanese positions near the end of episode 6 in the coral ridges. In this episode, he does the same off screen. He went to scout, peaked his head up out of cover, and was shot in the head by a Japanese sniper. RIP. Sledge was one of around 15 Marines in his company that wasn’t killed or wounded on Peleliu.

Legendary men, Haldane and Ed “Hillbilly” jones. Some of the greatest leaders our country has ever produced. Their men described them as close colleagues and both extremely kind but caring and brave leaders. Haldane would scout enemies so his men wouldn’t get hurt. This cost him his life, as a sniper turned his scope at the last minute and spotted him out of the blue. Sledge mentions no one ever came close to those two in terms of leadership

Fun fact: The Marine Corps is part of the department of the Navy. They are literally Naval infantry, sea soldiers, hence the name Marine. Although you never want to refer to them as soldiers. They have a strong nautical tradition and heritage inbred in their service, such as calling the company Captain “Skipper” and answering with aye aye and other naval terminology. Marines are considered elite, experts in amphibious operations. They are a rather small force by comparison to the Army. Where the Army has hundreds of Divisions, the Marine Corps has a Maximum of Five Divisions. Sempre Fi do or die, Devil Dogs, Gung Ho, gung ho, gung ho, Leather Necks. Get some! Marines adapt, improvise and overcome. First in, First to fight!

I think part of the reason that The Pacific doesn't get the same amount of love as Band of Brothers is that people felt it was disjointed and not as clear a narrative. I also think that some viewers were likely turned off by the brutality depicted in The Pacific, but that's the reality of the war and, in my opinion, makes The Pacific actually the superior series. Granted, I'm biased - both of my granddads served in the Pacific Theater - one in the Navy and one a Marine - so I feel a sense of connection with this series more so than with BoB.
@RJKookie
@RJKookie 28 күн бұрын
That was my experience. I saw BoB when it first aired and then when The Pacific was released I felt let down. I didn’t feel as connected to the guys as BoB but then I got hooked on Ep. 5 and really became invested in Sledge’s story. Ken Burns’ “The War” made me love him even more and I read his memoir and The Pacific grew on me and I started to love it more and more after every re-watch.

My interpretation is he resented the women being there because these guys just came out of "Hell's own cesspool," (from Sledge's book), the murder, filth, the horror... and for the military to bring these innocent girls from home into their world of horror? I sure he wanted them as far away as possible from all that. "What are they doing here?" Right? That's just my interpretation.

18:10 The military culture in Europe developed from mercenary units which were hired by local kings, with one king hiring mercenary units to fight the mercenary units hired by the other king. In that culture, surrender was expected - they were mercenaries, not loyalists, so once it was apparent the battle would be lost, one side would surrender, and the other side, also being mercenaries, would accept the surrender and allow the units to depart the field. Honorary surrender developed as part of the military code. In the far east, the military code developed along a different path, and 'honorary surrender' was not something they observed.

Does that include China, did the Chinese also not surrender or take prisoners throughout their history?

I think BoB is probably higher rated than The Pacific for a number of reasons. From my own experience, BoB is is more “rewatch-able.” It’s very intense at times, but never too long before a respite for your senses. The Pacific is an amazing achievement in storytelling and television production, especially in the area of filming prolonged sequences of complicated and intense combat. Aside from the Holocaust depictions in BoB, The Pacific goes to a more horrifying, gruesome, and graphic display of darkness, cruelty, depravity, and gore. It’s an amazing series. I just find it to be a much more difficult rewatch than BoB. Much of The Pacific is an assault on the senses and emotions. A must see series, but exhausting.

One look from Eugene to that cocky officer was enough to shut him up. When you look into the eyes of someone who has experienced hell it must be a sobering feeling. Basically Eugene is saying to that guy just by looking at him “Shut the fuck up…you do not even have the right to even talk to me” or something like that.

BoB was a great series, but The Pacific took things to a different level. They did a fantastic job with the psychological aspect of the war. Perhaps it is a personal bias of mine. I always found the PTO more interesting than the ETO. Initially, I liked BoB better, but once they got into their stride with this series, I thought it eclipsed BoB.
