Recorded April 22, 2021
In conversation with singer, songwriter, and novelist Wesley Stace
Acclaimed for “her hauntingly beautiful voice and fearless experimentation” (NPR), singer--songwriter Rickie Lee Jones has remained one of music’s most intriguing figures for more than four decades. Combining rock, jazz, blues, and pop, her 18 albums have garnered two Grammys and a multigenerational fanbase. A sought--after collaborator, Jones has been a guest vocalist in more than a dozen other musicians’ works. She is also a celebrated record producer, actor, and narrator. Last Chance Texaco is an intimate account of her unsteady childhood, the pleasures and pitfalls of early success, her battle against substance abuse, and her enduring position as a woman in rock and roll.

When did you find your poetry was most best expressed in a song 🎵 such as last chance Texaco. This song as a 65 year old I feel the sadness of the need for gas and the price the world paid for the American oligarchs greed in collusion to overthrow the middle east...sad but true end the waron Gaza. 2 state solution, 1967 border. Yes, as Cat Steven's sings, Morning 🌄 has broken... and we gave a new day. and their ever present

I have loved RLJ since the self titled album with the song, “Last Chance Texaco”. As a songwriter/singer myself , that was one of my favorites because of the clever lyrics, the smooth melody and Rickie Lee’s sultry, sultry vocal immersion.

Rickie is an American original, such a brilliant mind and creative artist. I hope she gets back on the road once COVID finally fades into the background. Her work deserves to be more widely know by a broader audience. Can't wait to read her book.

I'm reading this book at the moment. I love the language she uses, and the descriptions of her relationships, and the FEELING of the pain that Rickie Lee often brings to the book. She she writes her book like she writes her songs . It's unpretentious and natural. At the same time as reading, i am re-familiarizing myself with Rickie Lee's music. I was led back to her again via my love for the music of Laura Nyro, and by the way, i LOVED the tribute Rickie Lee pays to Laura Nyro in the book. Just as significantly, I saw Rickie Lee on a Sky Arts TV program recently here in the UK, and fell right back into her story. Congratulations on a great read Rickie Lee. and thank you for your music.

I've been a superfan since discovering her in my teens in the 80's. Have seen Rickie-Lee twice in concert in Australia, this interview is just fabulous. She's fabulous! I found Girl at her Volcano on tape in a 2nd hand book/record shop. I was already a fan from her first album but LOVED Volcano. Every time Daryl Brathwaite sings Horses, I die a little and hope Rickie gets her royalties. I have a story seeing Rickie-Lee at the Enmore Theatre Sydney, would have been around 1989. She came out in a pink pinafore which was very uncool attire for someone as cool as she but fitting for the 80's. She was playing Coolsville on a grand piano and someone's mobile phone rang. Mobile phones were not common in the 80's, she kept playing but stopped singing and looked at the crowd and said ever so slowly, "is that the phone man? is it for me?" Pink pinafore faded away as it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen as a 17 year old fan.

I'm almost finished with Rickie's book. It's wonderful and beautiful. I'm reading the last pages slowly - to not let it finish for me - too soon.
