Oh wow I just found this when I searched for "Autistic Morning Routines" and I really like how you get your kids ready for school! Huge props to you, I could never be this organized and chill in the morning myself, let alone get everyone else dressed, fed and out of the house (though I do not have kids, so this is me hypothetically speaking). As a grown up on the spectrum I still struggle a lot with mornings and really enjoyed watching and listen to you talk about your sons needs! Your approach is really nice and fun to watch

Can totally relate to this! It’s a relief to know we are not alone. Our son avoids getting dressed completely, and is hyperactive; and inevitably mornings are very stressful. And then we have a 30 min commute in traffic, to get to school. Great reminder to keep calm, take each day as it comes, and stay in tune to their emotions. Enjoying your channel! My son also is allowed to take a stuffy to school for comfort, we fond a heavy stuffed dog like a heavy blanked and he loves it... He is not able to eat without tv though, but we pick our battles.

Hi Tara, my name is Caitlin. I am 20 years old and was diagnosed with adhd at 3 and autism at 12. I was also born 3 months premature at home delivered by the ambulence, in an incubator for 3 months and on oxygen until I was 3. I know this video is from 4 years ago, so you may or may not see this comment. This video was actually the first one I found. My mum had a hard time getting me to school when I was little. I remember I'd always have really bad anxiety, and would purposefully take a long time to get ready. I'd even try hiding under my bed sheet when mum came to wake me up. There were tears, and hand flapping, some yelling too. Mum always had to hold my hand and get out of the car and actually walk me into the school grounds and then give me a hug and say goodbye after a teacher I felt comfortable with had come over before mum said goodbye so that I would feel comfortable after mum left. Saying goodbye was always really hard, and I would ALWAYS cry and scream. School itself was fun, and I enjoyed it. However when it was time to actually leave to go to school, that was when the anxiety would REALLLLLLY kick in. I had anxiety getting ready for school, but it was WAY worse when it was time to leave the house. I'd try to take a toy with me which wasn't really allowed, but we found that if I had a teacher who I trusted and was with that teacher the whole time in class, like she or he was helping me with my work and constantly checking in on me, the anxiety disappeared for a little bit. The best part of the day was when mum came to pick me and my sister up from school and I'd get to tell her all about my day, what I did, how much fun I had. And she'd always ask me "So you had fun? That's great! What was your favourite part of the day?". Unfortunately anxiety doesn't last a day and then go away forever. The same thing happened every school day until grade 7. Even then I still had a lot of anxiety, so my mum would walk me in the school gates over to where my friends were and then my friends would make me feel loads better. Some of them were also in the same class as me which was great because we got to walk to our classrooms together and sit next to each other. Being an autistic child/person is never easy, but its definitely a superpower in of itself.

Thank you so much for sharing.... so amazing to see the little things happening in your house with which I can relate so very well like the getting dressed in the morning part.... our little man is 11 and I still dress him some mornings. This is not something you can mention to just anyone because they would simply not understand the delicate give and take game we play to get things done in a calm friendly way on a regular basis... that balance of helping them to help themselves which can be quite a complicated process, more so because very often parents of children on the spectrum are on it themselves.... and the amount of judgement you sometimes go through is just sad!

I love this channel and your stories. I have a daughter with autism and she is not high functioning. Like you, I always have the foods she likes readily available because she is extremely picky.

My daughter hasn’t been diagnosed, but I started watching your videos as I was wondering if she has some level of autism. So much of what you said resonated with me and the methods/tricks/hacks you use are the same as what I have found to work. She’s nearly 6 and half the time I still dress her. If she’s thinking deeply about something she can’t multitask and do stuff like get dressed. I’ve learnt to get her to tell me straight away what I’ve asked her to do to check that she has heard me or takin in what I’ve said. Thank you for your real and honest videos xx

New subscriber, 6yr old daughter been diagnosed a few months ago. Agree 100% with the iPad we couldn’t coupe without it! My school tip is, I put her iPad on the table with her “limited” breakfast ready before going into her room to wake her then iv got a coat rack on my daughters wall with all her cloths and shoes laid out the night before with her hair brush and hair ties ready to go next to her bed. I wake her get her 100% dressed with shoes on before she can go to the table and watch her iPad and pick at breakfast till we walk out the door. While I organise my other 3 kids to be out the door at 7:40 am. With lunches etc done the night before and bags at the door.

New subscriber🎆 Thank you for posting about your story. I have been on the wait list for 8 months to try to get my son diagnosed and finally next month he gets his eval. I pushed the whole autism thing to the side his first three years of life but once he turned four I started to really think into it. He will be 6 next month. We go thru very similar things every morning. He only want chips, gummies or eggs for breakfast. Fights me for chips most of the time. He has meltdowns about getting dressed frequently. Never wants to try and do it himself. It's very rare he does. Fights me and has meltdowns about going to school everyday and he will literally ask me 50 times a day after school if he's going back to school the next day. Will be watching your videos! Walmart and Amazon has a 3 wheel bike that is low to the ground and doesn't have a chain. My son really likes it a lot. We also got him a balance bike which eventually helped him learn to ride a regular bike. It's so nice finding others moms with kids who have autism. I love your channel.

That really helped me. My son was only newly diagnosed. It's all falling into place now. I think you explained it so well.

Yes it’s hard to get my 3 half years old son get dressed and he mostly want to be carried to nursery. Once in nursery the teachers are great. They really help him settle in his routine.

Thanks for this! My ten year old is very Dillan 😆 We love iPads for lots of things especially creating StopMotion movies with our legos! We keep them in airplane mode to avoid any additional exposure to anything potentially negative like emf and to prevent online streaming ❤️

Going to school is always fun for the body. You managed to do an incredible job with everything. How my child may get there is interesting however. We've tried going on scooters for the first few years. Since my child learned at the age of 10 to ride a bike rather stick to the scooter. This year we don't really know yet.

And when I get home an hour on the couch with a cup of tea to pull myself together again after that morning routine workout 😂 we stopped screentime in the morning. We dreaded if, thought it would make everything worse but it was the opposite. He feels much better now in the morning and everything goes smoother.

iPads are fantastic! I use it to keep grandson occupied while I change his diaper, change his cloths. It's not perfect but it works for now. He's almost 18 months, and really finds it overwhelming. Thanks for your videos Granny Jacque

He doesn't want to, so he can't. You have no idea how much that one statement resonates with me. Our 8 year old is autistic, adhd, sensory processing disorder, and partially deaf. We homeschool primarily because day to day traditional school was a no go. He is on grade level. Can dress himself. Can handle daily things UNTIL he doesn't want to and suddenly literally legitimately can't.

Back in 4th grade I had just moved to a new school and we have uniforms I found out I hate collared shirts so they let me just get a normal shirt with the school logo. I’m in 10th now so I managed to get through it

iPads save the day for us. When he is all worked up, it helps calm him. I even let him watch in his bed until he falls asleep. Most of the people who judge haven't been in our shoes or at least with our kid. What is best for one isn't necessarily best for another.

Curious, does Dylan bring Rowan home after school to play or stay for supper? My youngest, Alex, would do that many times and it was cute to come home from work to find an extra pair of shoes in the entryway. My wife would tell me that Tanis was here, or Brexi, or Alex #2. Often though, it would be his best friend Tanis, who is also Aspergers, has tagged along home with Alex. So would have him until supper at 5pm when he went back to his home, often with Alex as company. Often Alex would stay at his friends for supper, if I was making something for supper he wasn't too keen on having and Tanis's dad was making something way better, according to Alex.

Question - how to identify if an autistic child is "difficult" due to their condition, or just misbehaving. Do you tolerate all his objections and let him do what he wants, or do you try to discipline him a little at all and how? Thank you x

Mornings are sooo stressful, like you said it all depends on the night they have had and what mood there in. Our massive issue is brushing teeth I could quiet frankly cry and scream I've tried everything at the moment hes using the iko from chewigem so far so good 🤞🤞.

I wish my mum had treated me better and understood me I had these issues and I got no understanding just got asked why cant you be normal. I treat my kids better but get alot of grief. I feel like I'm always failing and always feel bad about using video games etc. I get bad looks from people when I use that in public to calm my boy. People don’t realize that technology is our coping mechanism. I am on the spectrum with Asperger’s and I am very high functioning and technology is my escape from a world that is socially demanding.

Does hè go to a regular school?

My autistic son,also Dylan, will also only wear certain things. He has to be fully covered. Long sleeves and long pants every day. He loves Batman. All of his Batman shirts are from Ali express. I can’t find them in Australia a lot. Batman underwear,socks pjs the lot. I’ll buy several pairs of each so we don’t run out. It’s a challenge,I love him though. I got melatonin from a sleep a Doctor when he was 6. He’s 18 now. Doctor specifically prescribed melatonin.,not health food shop bought.

Dear Tara, We would like to get some advice from you that is desperately needed. We are Americans currently living in Guatemala. There is nil to no help where we live for autistic children. My daughter, Tara, has a 2 year old (10 days ago was his 2nd birthday) who although he has not been diagnosed officially, we are certain he is autistic. We are going to have to go this alone, and are anxious to get the best materials and advice that we can. We have watched many of your videos, and can't think of a person we trust more with this advice. We are working on getting Max his passport, which is proving complicated, since the Embassy is closed. I am also trying to sell my property here so we can return to the states, where Max can get help in the coming years. I was hoping he would not regress so quickly, but in 10 days he has become non-verbal. He spoke some of his words still until then. At 1 to 18 months, he had about 30 words or so. Now, occasionally one word a day. We thought we'd have more time. We would really appreciate any advice or books considering that this will be up to us for the near and indefinite future. We have really found a great deal of hope seeing your videos and we thank you for that. Max is a beautiful child, like your Dylan, and so far, he is a rocking back and forth kid rather than hand movements, but who knows what will come and when. My daughter is going through the grieving process, as am I, but we know that he is still our beautiful gift and this is just the way it is. I can't relate to this. All kids on the spectrum are different and I work full time as a single parent so being late for school isn't an option. My son in 10 and will argue about everything. Turning the tablet/tv off leads to him losing it- Trying different things out at the moment. Massive struggle at the moment for me. No family or friends nearby either.

Poor normal kids. I fill sorry for my granddaughter cause my grandson takes so much more time. But I love them both.
