this the oldest car i drove for my channel and also the only 2 stroke . it sounds like a moped and it is at first a little weird with shiting on the steering wheel.
but it is not bad it drives very good and upt to 80klm is pretty good to accelerate and will do pretty good in today's traffic. 0-100kph could be possible in 23.6 sec with a top speed of 130kph. the cars weight is 930kg . it is a small car but there is enough space in the car. the trunk is pretty big and there is enough space to sit for 4 people.
this model is the coupe with pillarless windows styles there was also a 2 door saloon availible, also a estate model and a sp coupe
like a small thunderbird model.

Me too ! First and last car with "Lenkradschaltung" ! It was replaced in 1969 by another Audi , the new Model 100 , costing about 8500 DM at that time. Those were the blessed days of the "Deutsche Mark " !

The yellow license plates came in 1978 in The Netherlands. The four rings were the logo of the Auto Union and Audi was 1 of the 4 companies that formed Auto Union, the other 3 were Horch, DKW and Wanderer. The 1000 S de luxe was (and is) a very nice car in its day.

I spent my early childhood in Brazil in the 1960s, and remember the 4-door saloon (Belcar) and the 3-door estate car (Vemaguet), made by DKW Vemag in Brazil. Many of the taxis in São Paulo were 4-door Belcars, and the 3-door Vemaguet were also common. The 2-door coupé is real cool. It also has a wooden dashboard and tasteful instrument panel. I saw one in Brazil only once. Your car is impeccably restored, and a pleasure to look at.

I owned at about 1969 a 1959 built 3=6 two door Coupé with only 900 ccm. - The great advantage of the down rotating rear windows was, that my drunken fellows sitting on the rear seatbank could put their had outside when drunk made its necessary. So that the room inside stays clean! The frontdriven car was very easy to handle on snow in wintertime. At this period of the year it was king on the road with the great small tyres, as well as the VW Käfer and the 2CV.

My dad bought a new 1975 wartburg it was a great car very smooth with it two stroke engine it took a bit to get use to the free wheeling gear box and mixing the fuel with the oil

Beautifull DKW, my Dad owned such one, and he ones transported 17 cathegesanten at ones in Breda in 1968. And four of them were sitting down THE headshelve ( hoedenplank). He was stoped by police and iT even came in THE local News letter De Stem. IT was A two stroke, that means that THE oil is in THE petrol. When he drove away, THE whole street was Blue of smoke.

This factory went bancrupt, because THE vehickles where to good. A VW has at THE LEFT headlight A copper screw through THE glassholder, what resulted in cathode/ anode effect, rotting away THE carrosserie after Seven years, THEN people changed iT for A New car. This DKW lasted at least 17 years, meaning they sold not enough New cars to survive.

I was too young to have a car in the 60's however I was quite a car fanatic, my dad had a merc 220S , one of my uncles had a merc 190 SL which I had several years later along with a Dinalpin ( Mexican Renault Alpine) 1100 bored to 1300CC, another uncle had a Jag XK 120, all this at the time when only mexican made cars could be bought, so those cars were amazing to be had, of those only the Dinalpin was actually mexican made, well in those 60's in my town there was illegal street circuit racing in the streets of new housing suburbs which drew so much attendants, literally thousands , that police woulnd´t dare to show up, there was this guy who somehow got an Auto Union two stroke and had it modified by bike racers mechanics, being light and FWD he would blow the dorrs off any 4 cilynder cars around until the EMPI VW's started to apear, those were good times

Funny hearing young car guys say they've never driven a column shift. : ) Some have never worked on a carb! Great lines. Stylish for a small German car. Though I can see why Saabs did way better here in the US as you can tell that is flimsy in comparison. I do love the wagons of that style. '58s on back had the windshield post slanted in the opposite direction, so I see from videos listed at the right. Thanks for the video!!!

Them's fighting words to any DKW owner. ;-) We always said Saabs sobbed themselves to death. :-) I have the drivetrain for a DKW Junior from 1962 in the garage. It was a slightly more modern engine than in our 1959 1000. It had oil injection instead of mix in the tank but it was only a 750 instead of 1000cc. Ours literally had traveled on goat paths on Cyprus.

After ww2 Most DKW factories were situated in the russian zone.The used the DKW technic for the Wartburg and the Barkas.

@@miller200d . This car had engine 1000 cc, 3 cilinder, 2 stroke...same engine had wartburg and barkas. The factory was in DDR...Democratic Deutchland Republic...is not russian. Befor 1990 year, was two germany country... RFG and DDR...

It's better to push the accelerator between changing the gear because the transmission is not sychronized in this old cars

I rebuild one in 1971. The oil injecktor was unreliable, it was easy to hop them up to 65. We never had disk breaks. It is a pity you couldn't drive it. It cruses at 140km per hour.

Wonderful car, there is one in the city not too far from where we live in a similar restored condition. We had them in Uganda too, back in the 1960's and they even ran in the East African Safari Rally. Are you sure the small engine produces 50 horsepower.? Could be 15 hp.

A DKW 750 engine in a Junior was rated at 34 HP. In a Junior, cruising speed was 74 MPH and full out was 76 MPH with that engine. The 981cc ( 1000 ) engine produced various HPs. As such, all engines were run on a dyno at the factory. The highest producing ones went to racers. The next ones went to the 1000s that were 4-door versions. The rest went to whatever else. A 1000 could produce even more HP than that by a trick they employed. Take two blocks side by side and use one as a compressor for the other. And yes, our 1959 was a DKW. It had a DKW name plate on the rear from the factory. Later they went with a V-6 model of two 3s in a V format and still only 1000 cc.

Two things I already knew it before I started to watch the video: First: That you would let the engine die when starting to move. Second: That you would have trouble changing gears. That's DKW (or Auto Union, if you wish)...

DKW ist in einem Verbund gewesen von mehreren Herstellern und Audi war ein Hersteller neben DKW wie auch Horch und Wanderer.
