Super video, thank you. I think it's worth highlighting the price as a key factor. The Tapo 10m 930 set is still a third less than 5m of the Govee M1. I went with Tapo over the superior M1 because I'm doing a 40m office build and for the price the functionality and connectivity of the Tapo excels. It's only accent lighting but still gives a lot of the zoned options of the M1. Will definitely consider your alternatives when I'm looking for actual lighting provision such as under counter kitchen builds, thanks so much for the lumen research, very valuable.

Figured I'd bring this up, tplink just updated their editor and available presets for the L930-5, allowing you to select "off" as a colour on the painting options and even apply some additional effects to the colour painting option, but many of these effects seem unfinished as of writing, but it's better than the lack of options from before.

I love your channel and content, I have one comment or suggestion, When appling light strips or anything with tape backing it is best to check the surface for bumps, and unlevel spots, sand it down if needed. Next put on some rubber gloves, clean the surface with alcohol as you shown. KEEP the gloves ON [because the oils from your skin will effects the stickness of the tape] as you did only pull a few inches of covering at a time. Finally firmly press and hold each section for 5-15 seconds each, use mounting clip at bends, along long section, more it hanging in a downward position and for sure at the start, the end and at all connections. This will make your install look better and last a lot longer. If the lights you get didn't come with accessories, Amazon has a ton of them in kits. Check size and number of pins. On some surfaces we added extra sticky with a spray or roll on glue accelerant. Check with 3M for an accelerant for glue tape. Adding a metal track with clear plastic cover will protect the strips and they will last forever. Keep these great videos coming. HEY YOU..... LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE ....NOW

I’ve invested in the TP-LINK TAPO strips and am very happy with my simple applications (backlighting, tv, shelves and art). I don’t use the strips to light parts of the room, instead accenting with light. Appreciate the video of comparisons. Hues performance might be great, but ‘everything’ else is no starter for me. A couple of custom light alert we use are one for Phone Ringing another for the Door Bell for when listening to loud music or the ringer is off. Or like me get tunnel visual while watch YOUR channel or playing video games. I use flashing patterns or up coming storms, another for mail delivery from a sensor added in the maibox. This is my favorite one, when the garage door opens, it signals to the family to come out and help unload the groceries. I've been working on alerts for food and other event timers, such as bed time, keep medicine, TV shows, etc. While writing this I missed a couple of alerts notifications, So I'll be creating one to flash the lights in whatever room I am in at the time, that I have a missed notification I need to check on. I need this I am alway missing the simple alerts that most people are more dialed in on.

Eve/SwitchBot won't do a sunrise/sunset at this point (I think). So don't pick those. Also, you can absolutely use them as flower lights, but I've always noticed that the grower lights have a few blue/red LEDs and are relatively intense. So yes, but think about how you're using the strip. :)

I'm looking for primarily white light and want to control temp and intensity, and I don't want to go with a product which is too dim. I will need a total of 40-50'. I haven't decided whether I'll switch the lights or use some app. Thoghts?
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 6 ай бұрын
If you're going to use a switch, likely don't go smart. You can see from our spreadsheet though which ones are the brightest and can use color temp. So I think you've got good options there if you want to use the app method or other smart methods. But yeah, if you use a switch...don't go smart. You turn off all the connectivity when you turn off the power to smart led strips and bulbs.

I'd say it's close, but not always! Think of it in terms of lumens / meter or point lumens like I showed measurements for in this video. Most smart bulbs are 800 lumens so that's what you're trying to replace!

I just installed the Govee LGBIC outdoor strip (the 10m version) along the counter rail on my newly renovated deck under a basic diffuser rail. It's very much the pre-M1 version (with fewer LEDs per metre) and I got it for cheap last Prime Day. It's not Matter compatible (unfortunately) and will likely never be (grrrr...) - I have to use the phone app via Bluetooth or WiFi - but does have a lot of interesting effects. It's value for money compared to the much more expensive (and only 2m-long!) M1. I'll only consider the M1 for future renovations once it's come down in price.

What is your opinion on installing LED strips directly on a wooden ceiling? I've read somewhere that it is recommended to not do so since wood is quite good isolated so the strips will heat up over time since the heat doesnt have any place to really go to.
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 23 күн бұрын
You'll have some issues potentially. I think it's OK to do with certain strips but you'd need one that wasn't putting off a ton of heat. That might lead you to a lower brightness or lower power version. :) A little heat on the wood isn't a bad thing. I think it's more about it falling down cause it won't stick forever. What might really help you is to put something on the ceiling before the strip.

@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
Hey Tony, in general most wireless technologies have about the same speed and tend to have similar latencies. Zigbee can be snappy too but if you get a lot of devices on your network it can slow down. The other thing that might be happening to you is that some of them are local and some of them require an internet connection. You can try a few things like grouping zigbee bulbs into a lighting group or maybe trying to switch the bulb types or to switch to an edge driver on everything

@@AutomateYourLife Thanks for the reply. It looks like everything I have is cloud based. And I only have zigbee. I thought all zigbee could be used locally. I guess I was wrong. I have a question, can you actually use 4 meters of govee(2 strips of 2m) to light up a room as main light source?
@AutomateYourLife

I think you could, but it'll depend on the room and how bright you want it.

Any way to get the lights to light up 2 steps above and below the step you are on? So every step you are on 4 to 5 steps light up and "follow" you?

Not an easy thing to accomplish, but you'd need an addressable LED strip that allows you to turn on segments individually. We have a review on the Aqara T1 LED strip that could do this

Which one is the best for making more natural light colors, especially warm white? The first time I tried a light strip I didn't like how it made a bluish white and an odd color of pink.
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
I really like the way that Hue does their warm White. It helps to have the diffuser because they often mix in those colours that you saw I do still like Govee but it is not a very bright warm White. The eve and nanoleaf light strips are really bright in all of the natural white colours and as long as you are going to be reflecting those off of walls or other surfaces then they will be excellent and you won't ever see the blues or pinks

RN phillips hue is £70 per 2 meters and honestly with my experience with them i can not say its worth it, the app is pretty good so are the presents but for £70 you are missing out on alot of things like multiple colours per 2 meters you cant have a rainbow or something of similar effect, the strips often break quite easily which results in having to cut chunks out of the strip and the customer service is pretty shoddy for £70 per 2 meters i would expect alot more from this product

I hope they get an Edge Driver too, but I think it's gonna be hard. It's all gotta be exposed the right way to ST so it's local and that takes some effort. Matter gives us hope for basic control though!

@AutomateYourLife I really don't understand why LIFX gets ignored so much. Other than some minor connection issues on crappy home wifi systems, it is the best! It is also the brightest. Has the most color features too. LIFX has also dramatically dropped in price too. I use LIFX for all my home automation lights.

Quick question: With the devices that use Wifi, is that communication local to the house or does it need to go out to the Internet? I am trying to make sure my house is not dependent on the Internet to get things to work and appreciate your insight!
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
Hey! Good question! For the most part, every light strip here is going to work without the internet in some way. Just not necessarily all of the ways you're after. It's going to depend on how you need the strip to work. Here's a great example. SwitchBot's strip can always use Bluetooth through their app to be controlled, so your phone will always have control. Plus you have a remote, and an on-device push button to turn it on or off. However, if you want to control SwitchBot through Alexa, that becomes a cloud connection. Any Matter product instantly does NOT require the internet to operate. Matter products also do NOT require the internet to connect to Matter Ready apps (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant). So those are safe that way. Tapo/TP-Link is very good at not requiring the internet. Since Eve just works with HomeKit right now, I believe that's entirely local too. Hope that helps :)
