The Automatic Trucker's Hitch is just what the name implies. It is a Trucker's Hitch that automatically locks off the tension you apply to it. It also allow you to tighten down your load quite a bit tighter because it utilizes an additional wrap on the the working end, thereby increasing your leverage. It holds best when using a smaller diameter rope or cordage, but can be tied effectively with a variety of different types and sizes of rope.

Love this video, especially the cows hitch loop! A more secure way for heavy loads is two counter clockwise loops one on top of the other. This applies tension to the loop closest to your anchor point on your bite first making it hold better under heavy loading. Although a little slower to tie.

The double wrap is popular among bushcrafters when rigging a ridgeline for a tarp shelter. Keeps the tension on the line and prevents sagging. Great video - thanks.

There’s a thousand truckers hitches videos out there. They’re all pretty ridiculously difficult to do for a dumbo and hard, not instinctual to learn, easily forgotten and seem impractical. One that I kinda invented was easy enough and worked ok but needed two hands to undo and under several tonnes of load would tighten up a bit. This one, however, is super easy and quite fun and satisfying to tie, quite pretty to look at and comes out like a slip knot when you’re done. Hallelujah.

These things should be taught in school. Even a week or two course showing how to use rope. I can’t count the amount of times either myself or someone else fumbled with a rope trying to make something work. Sometimes with sketchy results. My dad showed me the trucker hitch when I was younger but we never knew about the automatic version. He was also excited when I shared this video with him

You don’t have to go through the metal loop a second time, only the a second time through to rope loop for it to bite down. He just does that for added leverage when pulling the rope I think.

It is called a versatackle when run through both loop and anchor twice. It also gives much more mechanical advantage than a single pass truckers hitch. Just fyi, great vid👍🏼
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 2 жыл бұрын
I think the Versatackle is a little different. It uses two loops instead of one. It it essentially the same, the difference is that the second loop acts as your anchor point. And because it uses two loops, with multiple passes between those loops, it has a lot more friction. Plus, you need more room than the back of a truck bed to make it viable. It is a good alternative to the Voodoo knot though. I think it is more of an arborist knot, not really viable for tying down cargo. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts though.
@scottbrown2857
@scottbrown2857 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! My bad, you’re right. Well whatever I’ve been tying😂 is essentially the versatackle but run through the anchor point instead. As long as you’re not using rough rope ur gold. Dont need any more room to tie, self locks, huge mech advantage. Give it a try

This is interesting. I’m concerned that the cow hitch actually forms a poorer version of the full sheep shank. If you study the full sheep shank you will notice the half shanks are spaced apart. The risk with your version is they are very close, potentially touching. That compromises the locking effect. Also I’ve noticed a proper full sheep shank has the halves rotated the same direction, say clockwise. This causes the rope passing through them to be at a greater angle for maximum resistance to slippage. Study it closely and I’m sure you will see. I’m not a fan of anyone saying “it always has worked for me” if a safer way is no more effort. Good self locking idea and anchor tie off.

This isn't the same as the other automatic truckers hitch I've seen, both work great obviously because being able to hod that tension is awesome. One thing I will say is that with this version of the automatic Trucker's Hitch he has to be sure to have enough rope in your working end in order to make it through your loop a second time depending on were you set your loop. Other versions I've seen have the working end pass through the loop and then rather then going down through the anchor and back up through the loop they just pass through the loop a second time right away, this also works great. Another one does the same as I just described except before going through the loop second time it actually loops around the rope itself and back through the loop though I have found that one to be harder to untie.
@Roonza
@Roonza 7 ай бұрын
Yep, agree with you completely. You don't always have enough rope to go around a second time so you need to learn both versions. The very last one you mentioned is of the least value, it looks good but I have also found it hard to untie, I don't think it adds much value.

I'm glad to go and learn the Kalmyk loop, and everything here made perfect sense! I just don't understand why the mid loop was that cow hitch one instead of a normal trucker's hitch. Just showing an alternative?
@GavinKing_AKA_plumpNation

Is the normal mid loop just a slip knot? Or an alpine butterfly loop?
@pedroclaro7822
@pedroclaro7822 Жыл бұрын
 I went and fiddled with it. The loop that points towards the standing end is slippery, and the one he latches on to pull tension is not. The way he dresses it it looks like two half hitches with a loop inside each. If you tighten it differently you can see it’s essentially just two slippery overhand knots, and the friction of both knots is what holds it in place. I researched it quite a bit and I have no idea what this knot is called.

For the anchor point, could you use the boom hitch, or constrictor hitch? I now the constrictor is difficult to remove but I'd rather sacrifice a piece of rope than risk losing something on the road. Know-i-meen?

With such a system you can fasten, for example, a surfboard, but God forbid you use such a knot ( 0:45 ) to tie something heavy and serious!! Remember - what is easily untied by hand will be loosened in movement, swinging and shaking.
