I'm out and about on a film photography photo walk in my local woodland. I try to capture the change of colours as we head into Autumn. I'm using my medium format Mamiya 7 II camera and a roll of Kodak Portra 400 colour negative film. As always, my dog Barney, has come along for the walk too.

Beautiful, let me say: silent photography. the other side of autumn … no explosion of bright colours, but the subtle beauty of nature preparing for another cycle … the contrast between the perishing and the structures to stay like trees, landforms (sorry for my english … austrian ;-) … love this approach to photography very much and feel quite nostalgic thinking of the time when I owned a Mamiya M 645 …

Thank you Jakob and I think your description was spot on. As I walked around, the changes that were happening felt subtle and understated. I hope this comes through in the images. I'm enjoying shooting on the Mamiya at the moment and I'm glad I've gone back to incorporating an analog process back into my photographic workflow.

I watched the first bit twice. Once listening to you, twice to try to figure out what the obviously wonderful thing was that Barney had found in the leaves. A pine cone? A bag of gold? A nicely aged bit of calf liver? It was something special, whatever it was! I especially liked the last photo. Wonderful stuff. The first one was full of mood and just beautiful. I’ve never used Portrait 400 in the dark woods so it was interesting to see its limitations and strengths. I’ve only ever shot with it in well lit situations (generally). I live in the US Pacific Northwest, so it’s a concern here.

I wish it had been a bag of gold, Chuck. No, it’s usually a stick or a log. He always picks them up to carry. If I take too long faffing about with my photo thing, he will normally try to bury it somewhere. As you can see, there is an obvious yellow bias in the greens with the Portra. It is lovely in ‘good’ light but I was interested to see how it would work with the soft lighting and darker conditions I had that day. Thanks for watching again; I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Craig, I love the slow process of working with film and this on you video is emphasised by the lack of music, which does make enjoying watching the process all the better. I am however, still drawn to digital I'm afraid. I have grown impatient and can't wait to see the images!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, I'm enjoying shooting film again and the channel has kind of edged that way over digital. I'm not saying one is better than the other but at the moment, I get more pleasure out of shooting with the different formats on film. I'm excited about watching your progress with the Pentax MF though and I've looked at it myself (and the Fuji MFs) as a direction I may turn to in the future.

I love shooting Portra 400, but for the lighting conditions you had during this shoot I think I would have used a transparency film to pick up the contrast a bit. Maybe Provia 100? I really like shooting Velvia too, but i would have to shoot ISO 50 (I don't much care for the ISO 100) but I would rate it around ISO 32. The problem with that would be reciprocity in the conditions you had. Looooonggg exposures! Lovely images from a lovely day in a nicely wooded area. As always, I enjoy your videos. You're doing a great job!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you’re quite right John, I think the conditions would have favoured transparency on this occasion. Portra was the only colour 120 film I had so I went with it. Interesting to see the results though. Thanks for your support - much appreciated.

enjoyed the vlog. The Mamiya is a nice camera, do you have any other lenses for it? Do you know the difference between Portra and Ektar, or why you prefer one over the other? Thanks Craig....long live film!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I only have the 80mm for this camera. I know Ektar would have been a better choice for a colour neg film for these conditions but I only had Portra in 120 so that’s what I used. I’ve got a few sheets of Ektar 4x5 so I’ll do something back in these woods with similar lighting/conditions soon. Thanks for watching.

Nice shots. It is a pitty you did not had a 43mm to photograph the tree roots still nice composition with the 80mm. With this kind of forest and mist i really like velvia 50. I have a Mamiya 7 and the 43/80/150mm lenses. I enjoyed the video. Good work and congrats for your channel!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think some transparency would have worked well here. Maybe in the future, there will be the funds for other lenses but until then, I'll keep plugging away with my 80mm. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you liked it.

Great Video! And some amazing shots taken. Why did you use an external lightmeter? How does it compare to the internal one? Greetings from Germany
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruno, I'm just trying to get as competent as I can in metering different situations. I know I could use the internal meter, but by spot metering and making decisions as to what the exposure is (and making a note of it at the time), I can look at my film afterwards to see if I exposed correctly. In the last few years, I've got so used to shooting digitally and adjusting my exposure by looking at the back of the camera. I feel it's a skill worth mastering again. Thanks for watching.

great channel! and well.. if you ask for feedback, here it is. Kodak Protra 400 is crazy bad for green/yellow color photos. Yellowish green doesn't work here. I would have chosen any film that keeps greens green, or shift greens towards green-blueish color. That would have an extreme inpact to the viewer. Otherwise very enjoyable video!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could be right here. The green/yellow tones are stronger than I anticipated and obviously it's more apparent when chopping the images in amongst the film footage. Maybe for colour neg, something like Ektar would have given a greener green and would have worked better in this situation? Excellent feedback though - thank you for your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Justin, I've actually got a few sheets left of 4x5 Fuji Pro 160NS. Like yours, it's now expired but is being fridge stored and I'm looking to get it shot in the next month or so. You're right in that it would have worked better for this situation. But experimentation is good! I'm glad you've been enjoying the audio. I'm almost ready to dump my Epidemic subscription as I haven't used a music track for a while. Trying to record ambient sound whenever I can - I feel it fits quite well with the slower pace of large format photography. Cheers.
