5 жыл бұрынI've recently picked up a couple of new lenses for my Mamiya 7ii and in this video, I'm testing them out on a photo walk with my dog Barney.
I bought the 43mm f4.5L which features in a lot of the photos and the 150mm f4.5L which doesn't get much testing here, but I'll do more on that lens in a future video.
I've been using this camera for over two years now but have just been using the 80mm lens that came with the body. This is a lovely combination but I have been wanting to get more of these Mamiya lenses for a while and thought having an ultra wide and short telephoto would be good choices to add to my 80mm 'normal' lens.
In 35mm conversion terms, the 43mm equates to 21mm, the 80mm is 39mm and the 150mm is around 71mm.
I still haven't got around to processing slide film yet. It's something I may try in the future but these were processed at www.e6processing.co.uk
The slides were photographed on a light box with a macro lens to get them into this video.

Cool camera. Great lens choices. Watched a video recently where they converted this camera to an xpan ratio and shot on 35mm. Got some great photos. Just a piece of plastic really, quite simple to install and remove making this camera quite versatile. Watching the phone booth segment really made me want to take some bolt cutters to that barb wire. Humans can be so strange….

As always you deliver! The slow paced timing and high quality video are just superb. I have a 7 II with 43/65/150 and it’s a great kit. I sometimes use a centre filter on the 43, but the vigneting on the lens gives the pictures a certain “ Zeiss-like” pop.

That phone booth is like a figurative representation of brexit. I have the 50mm for my Mamiya 7II and like it a lot. The 43mm would be great for tighter spaces though.

Another very fine video here, Craig. Nice to see Barney was able to get out and about too. Glad you were able to acquire some additional lenses you wanted to try out. I use my 37mm on RB67 a lot. Works nicely for 2 or 3 horizontal takes to be stitched as pano's in PS. The Provia did I really nice job of it here too. I especially liked your closeup take of the yellow lichen covered old pillbox? with the green foliage at it's base.....

Really enjoyable video Craig..in all my time playing around with cameras (lots of secondhand ones in my old saturday job etc) I never came across a 7ii..looks an interesting camera and that 43mm is a beast, can't believe how deep it recesses in to the camera ! Loving the colour on the Provia 100...

As a fellow M7 shooter this resonates with my efforts to master the 6x7, and especially the metering. I rely too much on the onboard meter (which is not bad) but the examples here show how a spot meter can help tease out the nuances of the available light. Patience, grasshopper! Thanks again for another graduate-level tutorial.

I find the meter on the M7 works pretty well but I like using the spot meter whenever I can. It gives me a better understanding about what's going on in a scene and I feel it's an important skill to get to grips with when shooting film in particular.

Hi Craig, great to see you out with the Mamiya & the new lenses. Some cracking image too boot. Lovely ambience to the shoot. Image wise, loved the tree/rock shot, good composition, great depth n detail. Was surprised you didn't shoot the mackerel sky as the sky was going down - think it looked great. Btw, Barney needs an equity card - top dog :)

Another good vid Craig. After the train went past right at the end I expected you to lament the fact you had just taken the last frame of the roll. The train wouldve been a good shot, both shortest exposure (wide open) you could get away with and a long one acting as an abstract manmade among nature. Good to see you trying some slide film when your mono stuff is always great. I love Provia. Very versatile.

yes, that could have worked with the train. I always see potential photos when going through the footage for the video. There's something lovely about viewing a big transparency on a light box.

@@CraigPrentisPhoto definitely. My favourite part of the photography experience is seeing medium format slides on a lightbox. In my opinion it cant be beaten when the exposure is bang on. Really beautiful.

I really enjoyed this video and the photos. It made me want to try Provia. My favourite photo is definitely the roots of thd yew tree and the moss on the rock underneath them. It's very enchanting. As a whole, I thought all the shots worked well as an illustration or the story itself of a woodland myth through the day.

What a really interesting range of shots. I think the razor wire is around the phone box as they sell for quite a lot of money these days. Although I'm sure its a heath and safety nightmare in the making.

This is the first video I’ve seen of yours but it certainly won’t be the last. I have no idea how long I went with only one lens for my Bronica ETRSi, but I’m glad I’ve added a 40mm and a 150mm to my collection. I still only have one lens for my Zorki 4K, my Jupiter 8, but I’m quite with the status quo there. As a rule I don’t shoot e6 film as I struggle with the developers with my respiratory difficulties. I know they don’t smell as strongly as the C-41 developers but they definitely affect my lungs more. When I see a video like this though I'm sorely tempted to go out and buy a couple of rolls, but the control freak in me won’t hand them over to a lab to develop. You got some gorgeous images there, but I especially like the yew, and what we called "bunkers" when I was a child. The last image was a stunner as well. You have a great dog there and it was a brilliant video, I really enjoyed it.

Hi Mark, apart from not having an analog printing set up (which may or may not come in the future), I usually like to see the process through by developing the film as well. I'm sure I'll get around to doing E6 some time too. I'm enjoying having the other lenses now but there was something appealing about keeping things simple using just the 80mm. I'm glad you like the images and enjoyed watching. Thanks for your comments.

Craig Prentis I only have a 35mm enlarger but I've half an eye for an enlarger that will do both 35mm and 120. The darkroom is my favourite part of photography and I was really lucky a couple of years ago I was given some good quality space saving equipment.

Like you, I have a 35mm enlarger and all the other gear to get going but I don't really have a dedicated space the set it up and leave it. And yes, I'm interested in printing larger formats too so I'd need to get a different enlarger to do that.

Love that Mamiya camera! The lens quality and sharpness really looks fantastic. I think you brought out the best in Provia with those sunset shots, which really were beautiful. For medium format, I 'm shooting a Bronica. As always, appreciate a window into your metering decisions. Very helpful. do you develop your own film? Or send out? Excellent video, relaxing to watch, and filled with good advice, and very good compositions!

I'm not processing E6 at the moment. I put a link in the description to the lab I used. I think getting the spot meter has helped a lot with understanding how to expose with lots of different films. I could rely on the Mamiya's meter but I think taking an accurate meter reading is a fundamental skill in photography and gets you thinking about what is going on in the scene with the light. I'd become far too reliant on working digitally and chimping on the screen.

@@CraigPrentisPhoto Agree, too easy with digital to "cheat". Have started using a Minolta spot meter since having received it as Christmas gift. It has made exposure more reliable, especially with slide film. The expense of film is frustrating as well. Spent $33.00 on a roll of E-6 developing, scanning and shipping, plus film cost. Better be good with exposure! Thanks again for your good work.

Hi Craig very interestering video am in the process of getting a 7ii and some lenses. realy like your approach to photographing the group of trees its always worth waiting around for nature to adjust the light itself,photo was well composed in my view. as a professional teacher i will also echo recent comments in no background music why oh why dos one delibertly distract the narrater every word should be audible . will also add you have a very relaxed and polite manner which is welcome. will have a look to see if you have any subject matter on the 150mm lens as i like portraits as well as landscape, comming from 35 years as a wedding photographer digital is perfect from a cost perspective and a time factor but nothing beats film esp for portraits in obtaining natural skin tone. i have the bronica 6x6 sq with 80 and the very rare but special 180 lens which is perfect in a studio but not for a back pack and i also have mamiya twin lens with a few lenses. observing your video has convinced me am making the right choice. Have just one question do you always obtain your own meter reding.

Thanks Martin, I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the videos. Yes, like you I use digital for my wedding work but I have little interest in digital gear. I’m happy to keep this channel mostly film related. I usually take a meter reading as it’s simple to do on a slow landscape shot but I have been using the Mamiya’s built in metering more recently.

How is the 7 lens quality compared to the Mamiya RB and RZ series lenses? It's difficult to believe its even remotely comparable in quantitative optical quality.

I don't own the RB or RZ so I can't comment on those lenses. All I know is that the M7 lenses have a great reputation and I'm happy with the results I get. I'm sure there are charts that you can look up for comparison info but that doesn't interest me at all.

Thought there was something quite sad and disheartening about that lovely old phone box wrapped up in razor wire like that. Maybe I’m just being a bit too metaphorical and nostalgic. Anyway, another nice episode. Barney had the same look on his face my chocolate lab when she has to stay in the car. Enjoy the new lenses.

I have the same meter, its a pain you cant just select the aperture i reckon, and doesnt like the dark at all but other than that it is quite good and good value.

Thanks Teddy, I tried to replicate how the Provia slides looked but there's no substitute for seeing them first hand on the light box. It's a film I really like for those conditions.

Who thought the razor wire was a good idea though Put a chain and a padlock around it you really want to close it, not something dangerous to animals and people

It does seem over the top when a chain and padlock would have done the job. The box itself is on a remote country lane with no real pathway so people aren't really at risk, but razor wire at a low level is not good for animals.

Get closer with that wide angle! Most of these shots could have been done with your normal lens further back, with little difference. Not that you should *not* ever use it that way, you are just not getting your moneys worth by *only* using it like that.

I think putting on that razor wire is a bit dangerous. Also, not very nice for photographs. I didn't like that razor wire shot much. I'm imagining they don't want you to take photographs either. I like your various compositional attempts. Mamiya made great cameras and glass. I had a c330 TLR with multiple lenses for a long time. What were you using to film the video. It seemed rather low resolution.

I did speak to the owner of the phone box and they had concreted it in and added the razor wire. They are quite valuable and people try to steal them and vandalise them too. I have to disagree about the razor wire though. I am used to seeing these phone boxes from time to time but the razor wire is what made me stop and take the photo. The low res has been sorted now. I think KZfaq was still processing the file.
