It took me til the 4th theater watch to be able to successfully hold back the tears. A visual masterpiece and much more emotionally impactful. I think the Spider-Sully-Quaritch dynamic is more complex than you give it credit though. Spider didn't have much choice once he was captured. It was either get tortured by the science dept or play reluctant tour guide to the marines; and even then he didn't really do anything to betray his allegiance to the Sully's. When he saved Quaritch at the end, again reluctantly, I think it was in response to the unexpected show of mercy by his estranged father when Neytiri was threatening Spider's life. And Spider was scared shitless when he seen Neytiri on that boat lol. Same look he had when Quaritch was watching the playback of his death. Spider would NEVER try Neytiri, he aint crazy 😂

lets not forget spider saved what he believes is his father plus hes a CHILD, you can't hate him for for that. we all make mistakes. especially when we are young and don't know any better.

I cried in cinemas when the humans were hunting down the Tulkun spirit sister and the calf. It’s just so slow and painful to watch that overtime it makes you realise what we are doing to Earth right now. For Neteyam’s death too, just hearing Neytiri mourn over the loss of his oldest son really puts the perspective of a strong parent

The Way Of Water has a special place in my heart and the reason why is because it expresses everything I love. Family, Friends, Animals, Acceptance, Environments, Sustainability and Challenge. Just seeing a moving picture which is an entire world made from complete scratch is incredible. With so the character developments even for new ones, you can tell what kind of character they are just in 3 hours by how they behave, how they move, what risks they are willing to take for a purpose in which we understand on a deeper level. Even so for the animals, every single one is completely unique and I don’t believe there is a copy of that one thing. Each one has their own markings even the slightest detail you can see is what makes each one different

Spider saved Quaritch not just because he was his father, but because he saved his life, Neytiri was going to kill him.

Spider is just a kid who honestly probably doesn’t know where he belongs. It makes sense to me why he saved his father but he wants to be a part of Jake’s family. He made a stupid move but I understand it

saying you hate spider just proves you don’t understand him or his motives/character at all. he was abandoned at birth and an orphan. he found solace through the Sully family but at the same time feels excluded because he knows he’s not one of them and still gets blamed for the things his father and the humans do, and dod during the war, even though he was born on Pandora. Of course he would feel a connection with Recom Quaritch, and you’re being hypocritical if you hate him for that. It’s the closest thing to a father figure he’s ever had and I bet he feels immense guilt for that. He saved him for good reasons, he couldn’t let the closest thing he had to a father die, but he also continued to stay loyal the the Sullys by turning his back on him. And to say he wasn’t doing anything when he was captured? It’s either he went along with them or he continued to be tortured. He never revealed anything about their location even when he WAS being tortured. We have to remember Spider is 16. All of his actions were reasonable, realistic, and had good intentions. He is not the villain.

This movie is outstanding and mind blowing away amazing can’t wait for avatar 3.

Spider never betrayed the sullys until he saved recom miles. And all he did was tag along and teach them the Navi language. He didn’t have much of a choice bc they had a tracker on him and because miles said if he didn’t come with him, he was gonna give him back to the lab where he was being tortured.

I agree that the plot is generic and simple, and I was kind of let down when I first saw this film *because* of the plot. But like many, I rewatched the film multiple times since, and it gets surprisingly better with multiple viewings. The genericness of the plot is just something you have to look past, and once you do, the film suddenly becomes a masterpiece. At least that's how it felt for me. There is so much that Cameron excels at as a director that is on full display here in the sequel: action sequences, world building, cinematography, editing, the character relationships, and the emotional beats in the final act. And as for the plot, it's not groundbreaking by any means, but it doesn't have to be. Every film has its strengths and weaknesses, and the two Avatar films thus far have succeeded in making you *feel* for the world of Pandora and the characters and creatures that inhabit it. You could argue that the world of Pandora *is* the story of the film, that the story is very much intertwined with the world building.

I mean I saw you reply to a comment saying you were harsh here but damn... Miles hates jake for killing his human counterpart. It's also EXTREMELY logical to go after Jake. He's got first hand life long experience with Humans. He was a marine & has that experience with human military tactics. No matter how much he tries teaching the natives of Pandora these things they'll never have that true first hand knowledge. Not to mention their own knowledge & customs gets in the way. Like in the first movie when the OG chief refused to listen to Jake & evac his people. They just don't understand the mindset of the RDA like Jake would. Killing him would remove a MAJOR source of tactical knowledge from the Na'vi. Makes total sense why Jake is a target. Idk you just shit on the Miles story way to damn hard when he's like the best thing in the movie. Character wise anyway, I mean I loved his pure Human first character in the first movie but he wasn't well rounded there. He fucking is here. He's got legitimate reasons for his actions. Not every RDA soldier killed in the first film were assholes. They were following orders based on intel given to them by Miles. They thought they were in the right. Miles is a humans first person & HATES knowing good men/women good soldiers were killed especially by Jake who was one of their own. A fellow Marine. His motives throughout the film are tied to his humans first beliefs & even a brief amount of fighting with the knowledge that he's now in a Recom body. His constant need to 1 up Jake is a driving force too. Which by the way he accomplishes without much issues. His taming of the banshee was way better than Jake's, he whooped Jake's ass 1v1 & only lost due to outside intervention. Hell even human Miles beat Jake who needed saving from his girl (whose name I won't try spelling). It's disappointing the hostile tone you take towards Miles & the RDA storyline even though it adds plenty. There's better reasons for Human/Na'vi war in the fact that Earth is dying & this age stopping whale oil stuff. Which will get more fleshed out in the future. I mean the only generic person I saw was the fishing captain who even he has purpose. He's acting just like the whalers of old do. Hell even modern whalers (by that I mean the whale hunters) act like that guy a lot of the time. They make "the hunt" a game or challenge for sport. Sometimes to take the edge out of the horrible killing & sometimes because it's just how they feel. Hell event the added fact that the whale brain oil stuff stops aging gives a good reason for human hunting. There's no animals rights movement on earth that'd stop us from harvesting whale brain fluid if it could really stop us from aging. Hell I'd be on board with that too cause I'd (along with others) would want my family to not have to age. The only real issue I have with this film is the human military tactics in combat are still unrealistically poor. Dog, MODERN right now humanity could wipe the shit out of the Na'vi with our modern tech & there wouldn't be a damn thing they could do to stop us. Even if they could it's as simple as dropping a nuke on 1 part of the planet in a proximity close enough for the Na'vi to witness the power & then threatening to drop more if they don't settle down. That and I'm annoyed the glass on the new choppers still aren't strong enough to stop the bow & arrow trick. And yes, Miles will be a character in EVERY movie going forward. He's here for the long haul. That's not news dude, we already knew that. His character is going to grow as we go. Not in a "he'll turn good" way either. What's likely to happen is he realizes RDA are sabotaging Earth (as explained in extended lore) & he'll turn on them because he's a humanity first person. Not a RDA first person. When he realizes the RDA are hindering Humanity rather than helping he'll turn on them. Not turn on them & suddenly love Na'vi & Jake or anything. It's all about humanity as a whole for Miles. EDIT: Well I feel i didn't add enough positive. I did like the reaction overall, I just had strong thoughts on nitpicks & what not. I did enjoy though

50:00 2 things, one is that humans as many as there are of them they cant take on all of the Navi atleast not without a heavy casulty so do it step by step and two is that Jake is a Toruk Makto pretty much he is like a Navi war saint if he goes to the tribe and call them to arms the clans will answer, so by killing him you remove the posibility of your enemy to group together and alone tribes are easy picking

That last battle is so much worse of a situation than Titanic. So much worse. I remember yelling in the theater when the boat sank, “SOMEBODY, HELP!!!”

No Spiders just terrified of Netiryi and knows hes not family to him.

A very worthy reaction 💪 I watched this movie four times in theaters and I have to say that my opinion of it changed a bit every time. I also found out that my own state of mind during that day affected A LOT how I perceived the movie 🤔 And I have to say that I actually liked the Spider character quite a bit. He’s a very layered one.

I do find your reactions throughout the film kinda curious. You initially discuss how basic or simple the story beats are, but when wrenches are thrown into the mix by a kids, one of whom was basically family-less, you despise only one for it. The bulk ll of the story was propelled by the kids in the film, and all around them adults thought they were making mistakes. I think you've misread Spider, and I wonder if that in part is due to Neytiri.

Spider is literally a child tho… Neytiri did not take him into their family, even Jake calls him a stray cat so it’s really unfair to hate on him when Spider just wants a family and Quaritch is his father so he kinda got that for a sec.. he never betrayed the Sullys (never told them anything even when they tortured him and he had to follow along with them or else he would be tortured more…) he came back for Sullys and said the biggest fuck you to Quaritch by leaving him all alone with the rest of his squad dead. I hate this Spider slander…
