We're now familiar with the Vanquish Products VS4-10 Phoenix Portal 1/10 RC Rock Crawler. In the review, this impressive work of engineering goodness managed to conquer 4 of the 6 test problems. During the build, we used the wider wheel adapters on the front and the narrow adapters on the rear. The thinking was this may have been a mistake!
So, today we've swapped out the wider adapters in the front for the narrow ones. Now front and rear of the vehicle have the same, more narrow track. Can the Phoenix finish all 6 problems now?
Let's test!
In this series:
Part 1 - Introducing the VS4-10: • Let's Test! Vanquish P...
Part 2 - I Made It Worse: • Aw Snap! Vanquish VS4-... (this video)
Part 3 - Fixing the Track: • Better Crawling for $0...
See our write-up for more detail: rc-tnt.com/rc-crawler-reviews...
In Part 3 we'll look at wider track in both front and rear. Will the VS4-10 find redemption with the bigger gap? I can't wait to see how it goes, personally! I really want to see this thing go well!

This is Part 2. It may not be the most elegant of driving examples on this channel, but as a test of Before and After, consistency is what matters. Don't miss Part 3 where we test wider track front and rear with clear results! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9-UZ7Oh3LiaZ6s.html

It's also obvious that it suffers from a high CG....failing to right itself is evidence of this. Perhaps a droop setup and/or taller shock towers would eliminate a few of it's short comings. I'd go for the low hanging fruit and try wider 4.75's with metal bead locks to start with. Great investigative series this will be and will no doubt help out people purchasing this rig, who would have otherwise been puzzled as to it's lack of climbing prowess. Great work as always Craig - sort this rig!! haha

Only changed the track! That's all! The tyres could be better, yes, but track change alone made it worse. Next time, I'll go the other way - wide at each end. It'll be an interesting follow-up to this one!

I wasn't just about to buy one, but when I saw the videos I did think it was fantastic! I'll see if I can watch a couple other videos with it, see if I can get some sort of fair impression of it. Oh I could feel that frustration. I start breathing like that and I need to step away and take a break. I'm sure you'll get this thing dialed in. You probably already have and we have to wait for the next videos :). I appreciate that you're working to make the supplied parts work well (like you did before with the other trucks' supplied tires). Like others have said, it feels like a combination of the cg and foams/tires are holding this truck back for your course. Really curious what a decent set of tires with some aluminum or steel beadlocks would do for the Phoenix, but we'll see how the track width changes its performance! 👍 At least your paint job still looks cool underneath the lexan 😅

narrowing or widening isn't going to help it rock crawl like you want. its sold as a trial truck, so your gonna need to do the regular mods to bring the cog down. just like a trx4 or an axial scx
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 жыл бұрын
We'll see :) Next video drops tonight. I agree with you in part, about the COG bit. I've been through this with many trucks before over many years and I like to start with just the machine itself, before any money is spent. But sold as a trail truck? This design screams rock crawler: solid, locked, live axles. Single speed. Low gearing. Overdrive. DIG. These are all rock crawling-biased elements. A trail truck might have IFS at least, unlocked axles, two speed transmission, or at least higher gearing, etc. So, the plan is to see how far we get with configuration first. What's there to lose with experimenting? Thanks for tagging along, I'm actually excited to see how far we get with it before another dollar is spent. Cheers!

Tires are next, you bet. If you look through the scores of vehicles we've tested on these same problems this year, you may have shared my expectation for better performance. I very much agree, the tires are poor! Good call - that's what we'll play with next, in January. Thanks for watching!

Maybe cut your foams or use softer ones. The tires seem like they are causing this by not conforming to the surface and just letting go when they start to get traction. Larger diameter isn't always an answer if the tire can't function like it's supposed to. If they're too firm and can't compress to actually use the traction, that's what's happening. That thing should hold on just fine with good rubber.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That won't be next video but tire modification is Coming Soon (TM). Thanks for the thoughts, I think you're spot on here.
@danweiss4928
@danweiss4928 2 жыл бұрын
Watching in a video most looks like it could benefit from 10 mm longer shocks. Just before it flips when it hits the center pan the tires are trying to reach out. That gets a little momentum and just flips quick. I would say it was a very good test. Because it really showed some of its shortcomings. Well just like all rc truck things can be worked out by spending money on aftermarket parts. Ouch!!!

That was... frustrating, to say the least. I was totally sharing your groaning and moaning as you struggled on each part. I'm also 100% with you on wanting this to work, for all the great technical features it has. It should perform better than this... yet it struggles on every part, and I can't really point my finger to one clear single issue, from where I'm standing. To try to lower that CoG, I'd say, maybe remove the overdrive servo and lock it on 6,5%? I really think removing at least one of the tranny's servos can really make a difference for pure performance and the CoG. But then again, I think the icing on the cake of this rig is just being able to switch on that tranny... so I'd be a bit baffled too. I sincerely hope the wider rear and/or an alternative set of tires (I'd start with Element's General Grabbers to get a known, great performer you already have and can easily test) bring it back to where we all hoped it should be. Impatient for the next video. This series has left more than one of us on a cliffhanger! :D PS: that Problem 5 music made me think of a more a more determined and hopeful mood of things to come... (sadly wasn't the case) The music reminded me a lot of Tangerine Dream's music for the movie Risky Business.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yes, agreed on several points there. Fwiw, I have removed the front servo and locked it at 6% already. Haven't got to mentioning it yet in the videos as I'm still working my way over the rig. But rest assured, we'll make progress on this thing. Just gonna take some experimentation to get there!

I take your point, but I tried slow (see previous video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erRhjNad2pm8o58.html). The big difference between our experiences may well be the brass and Hyrax you're running. Try the stock wheels and tires on the same problems you're currently conquering and I suspect you'll find that 'slow' is just not effective with this setup. (If it helps to know, I've got a follow up video coming with wide track front and rear and from there I think we will have more in common!) @@aalmuhairi the problems need to be hard so that we can get useful comparison between vehicles. I've put maybe 30 different vehicles over it in 2021 and that gives an idea of relative capability, which is useful to those of us evaluating which crawlers to consider for builds, comps, drives, etc. We'll see how far we can get the VS4-10 without spending money on it first. Still some things to try yet! Thanks for your thoughts :)
