I am an 80s child (circa '73), & lived (and currently live again) 15 miles from the redwoods used as Endor! The cast stayed in my town, & locals were a lot of non-speaking stormtroopers; so this movie has a special place! The original movies were groundbreaking for special effects & production; & the soundtrack by John Williams for these original movies is legendary! ❤

The Jedi normally start training very young, and are called "younglings". When they graduate from their elementary schooling, they are assigned a master who trains them. At that point, they are called "Padawan", and are basically trainees... interns to a real Jedi. Luke missed almost all of this. He was never trained as a child. He trained a bit under Obi Wan Kenobi, then continued to study on his own for a while. Then he had a crash course under Yoda for a few months. Then he was again learning on his own for some time. After confronting Vader in this episode, he finally attained the rank of "Jedi Knight". But under the old system, there's no way he would stand up against a Knight. In the prequels, you'll see what a fully trained Knight or Master can actually do, and you'll realize how woefully inadequate Luke's training really was, and how reckless he was to think he could take on Vader or the emperor.

You wondered what 'Leia' was a princess of... that would be Alderaan, her home world which was destroyed in A NEW HOPE (by the first Death Star). 💥 She's also a Senator for the survivors which were offworld when the planet blew up... and she's a general in the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

There's a deleted scene where it shows that Luke actually went back to Obi-Wan's hut in the deserts of Tatooine, and that's were he found Obi-Wan's books and documents and he studied them in order to learn more about the Force and being a Jedi. That's also where he learned how to make a new lightsaber and where he found the spare parts to build it. A cool detail is that if you look at Luke's original blue lightsaber it looks similar to Vader's lightsaber because it used to be Anakin's before he went to the Dark Side of the Force, so Vader made and designed both of them. Luke's new green lightsaber, which he built based on Obi-Wan's schematics and parts, looks much more like Obi-Wan's lightsaber instead of like his old one or Vader's. Leia was adopted by the Alderaanian royal family as a baby, so she's the Princess of the planet Alderaan. You know, the one the Death Star blew up in the first movie when they interrogated her. As the princess she was also serving at the time as Alderaan's representative in the Imperial Senate and that's why her alibi when she got captured was that she was on a diplomatic mission, though Vader didn't buy it. So now she's just the Princess of the surviving Alderaanian diaspora, and being a high-ranking member of the Rebellion, she's pretty much a living symbol of the fight against the Empire.

Fun fact of the movie- Carrie Fisher complained about her long unflattering costumes in the other movies so they had her wear this skimpy outfit when she was Jabba’s slave. She didn’t like to use double sided tape to keep things in place so there was constant adjustments and some reshoots that had to happen.

I also grew up (in the '70s & '80s) in Southeast Iowa on a small farm (hay, cattle and pigs). (Alaska now). I've enjoyed watching the series with you and hope you continue. The iconic movie that I believe defined the genre of '70s Science-Fiction would have to be "Silent Running" with Bruce Dern. It encapsulates the sense of exploration in our a "real world" solar system, but with a cautionary "climate change" message to give it a progressive, environmental conservation, back-to-nature vibe. When Star Wars came along, the direction of the genre was changed completely and forever. I don't think that is a bad thing, but the earlier movies should not be forgotten nor thought of as inferior in any way. Just a different approach.

Oh, hey James! You finally got it passed the KZfaq Gods, eh? Cool! Okay... let's do this! 1:02 - A farm in Iowa... growing chickens.... Look, man, I *KNOW* you don't know much in the way of movies(and that's fine, I'll help you along where I can)..... but do us both a favor, and have some fun with it. When someone asks why you're not very versed in Star Wars, tell them this: "I grew up on a farm in Iowa, and I'm James T. Kirk's great, great, great, great, great grandfather. (That's a Star Trek reference... as HE was born like you, an Iowa farm boy). It will make a great ice breaker, and show that you have a sense of humour! Also- You should get into the Star Trek universe at some point, as well. There are 10 decent movies(From "The Motion Picture" to "Nemesis"), not counting the "reboots". As well as 5 TV series pre-2000 that are worth getting into. You don't have to do reactions for every episode of each series, but you should check them out for full context. Kinda like I told you with the Star Wars animated series(The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Rebels). But enough rambling.... 1:36 - Okay, let me pause this again for a second.... because I literally just laughed hard enough to make a cat jump off of the back of my chair. And no, I don't look down on "IT Nerds".... quite the opposite. But that I just finished typing a paragraph about Star Trek, and you said, "I work with Data".... I know you're not going to get why this is funny, right now.... Oh, Hell, character names aren't spoilers, right? There is a character in Star Trek: The Next Generation named "Data". He is a sentient android, and 3rd in command the USS Enterprise(NCC-1701-D). Okay, I think now you understand why I thought that was funny enough for a belly laugh. And trust me, I have a good sized belly. =D 5:00 - There's a deleted scene that shows Luke assembling his new green bladed lightsaber, but it was cut for time/pacing, as well as to keep the surprise. 7:23 - As I told another reactor recently; Luke knows that Jabba is a criminal, and the best option to start with, is to appeal to his vanity. That's why he used that tone in his message. 10:00 - Good guess! I'm sure you know how to play chess.... always put your pieces in place before you strike. That's what Luke has done here. He knew Jabba wouldn't go for it. 10:30 - Very minor continuity error here.... When Han was frozen, his arms were shackled. When he's released, they aren't. 11:30 - Some minor conjecture here: It's believed that Luke did NOT go back to Yoda prior to the events of this movie, but was using the rank of Jedi Knight on his own. We can gleam this from dialogue later on, "Then I *AM* a Jedi..." 15:44 - Yes. Boba Fett. Remember that name, there will be a test later. (half joking) 15:55 - "Yep, he's gone." Yoda- "So certain are you?" (that's a hint, not a spoiler) 17:17 - The "red guys" are Imperial Guards. 18:19 - Normally, I make a David Tennent / Dr. Who joke... but it would go so far over your head, you couldn't shoot it down with a rocket launcher. (no offense, man!) 18:55 - Right.... that's not exactly what Yoda is telling him, here. But to say more, would be handing out spoilers... and you know my policy. Let's just say that Luke is NOT the only Force User trained in the "light side/Jedi way", and leave it at that. Luke is, however, the only one capable of... how to put this....(three minute pause while I consider this)... capable of confronting the Emperor. 19:42 - Yes. Yoda has "transformed/merged" into the Force. Like Obi-Wan, he has learned to become "One with The Force". A "Light Side" ability discovered/learned during the Clone Wars animated series. Hence, why it's good to get caught up on that one. It gives a lot of back story to events you won't find elsewhere. 20:23 - Yeah..... we know... the "kiss" on Hoth during Empire..... but, to kinda explain that, Lucas was originally going to create a new character to be Luke's sibling, but felt it was "too late in the journey" to actually do so. That's why Leia was chosen to be his twin. 21:15 - Notice, in the schematic... the access tubes(vents) don't go directly to the Main Reactor. THAT was the weakness in the original Death Star. 21:30 - No.... as I said just above.... in the original Death Star, the vents led straight(no twists/turns) to the Main Reactor. That's why Luke's shot worked. This time, they actually have to fly INTO the superstructure to the reactor chamber. 22:40 - Speeder bikes. 24:26 - Leia is the Princess of (one of) Alderaan's royal family. Well, as you now know, "adoptive" daughter. She was raised by Alderaan's Senator Bail Organa and his wife. Remember, her "home planet" was blown up by the first Death Star? 26:35 - Okay, remember this part.... the Ewoks are about to cook, and eat "our heroes"(humans).... keep that in your mind for the end of the movie. 28:16 - No, the TIE fighters can't.... as they are cheaply made. X-Wings, Y-Wings, etc(on the Rebel side) can. 30:43 - Force Lightning. It's a Sith ability. 34:07 - That, is the biggest mistake Lucas made with this particular movie. Story wise, that's a "young" Anakin Skywalker. He was inserted over the actor who we saw unmasked in the earlier scene, which would have made more sense to keep in. The Young Anakin was added after the prequels were finished, for "continuity" sake, since the last time Anakin was actually a Jedi, was when he was younger. 34:55 - I see your point(and it's not wrong, either), however, you should also take into context WHEN this movie came out. It was still less than 10 years after the end of the Vietnam war, and is, in essence. a metaphor for that war. The Ewoks are basically the Viet-Cong, the technologically challenged vs the "big superior empire"(the US). Movies are, after all, a product of their time. So, always look for a historical context from when movies are released. And yes, the Ewoks WERE partially to sell toys. I won't deny that. 36:09 - Okay, the Sith(evil Jedi, for lack of a better term) operate under the "Rule of Two". A Master, and an Apprentice. There's a reason for that, but I won't get into it here. It is basically the duty of the Apprentice to kill their Master, after they've learned all they can from them, then go on to learn MORE. The Emperor wanted Luke to kill his father so that he would have a "more intact" Apprentice. You have to understand, we(the fans) knew that Vader could not live without that suit. You'll find out why later on. So, his abilities were diminished. The Emperor wanted a more powerful apprentice, to replace Vader. Or, worse come to worst, for Vader to have Luke as his apprentice. If Luke struck either of them down in anger, he would be headed down the path of the Dark Side, thus making the Sith more powerful in the long run. 36:32 - Empire is usually the "audience choice" for most popular film of the original three. Don't feel bad for thinking that way. Also, when Lucas wrote the original screen play, the Death Star wasn't really supposed to come into the picture until the 3rd movie, but in case it(the first one) "flopped", he put one in there, too. He wrote a story that was "too long", so took the "best parts" out of it to make Episode IV. That's why we have a second Death Star. That way, IF the first movie died in theaters, at least it would be a nice "self contained" story. Obviously, it didn't.... so he had to re-work the story a bit to make V and VI. We are often our own worst critics.... and Lucas is no exception to that rule. I know I'm mixing reality with story, but it seems kinda important to give a good detailed history of how this all came together. Again, Empire of Dreams is a great watch, and tells much of what I'm telling you here. Also, going back to the Ewoks..... remember the BBQ they were going to have with our heroes?.... Did you notice at the end that there were no Imperial guys standing around? Where do you think all the meat for that celebration came from...... (yeah, that's pretty dark, isn't it.) 36:50 - Yeah, but before you get to VII, VIII, and IX..... you need to watch I, II, and III.... THEN Solo(if you choose to, I like it, but it's not required viewing), but Rogue One is an absolute MUST VIEW! I swear, man... when I saw that movie in theaters... it took me right back to being the 10 year old kid that saw Star Wars in theaters back in 1977.

Thanks for the replies, guys! Star Wars is one of the Sci-Fi franchises that I'm very passionate about. The original 1978 Battlestar Galactica is another, as is pre-2000 Star Trek, and the Planet of the Apes movies(minus that Marky Mark debacle). I actually enjoy seeing "new" fans being made with these movies, and it kinda takes me back to when they were all new. I very much remember the feelings I had when I first saw those movies in theaters. I remember the long waits between movies(3 years between movies in the Original Trilogy, then 16 years before we got Episode I). They have their flaws, but I don't care. I still enjoy them to this day. Also, there is so much hate in the world today, that I prefer to spread a little joy in the ways that I can. One way I can do that, is to post informative, friendly posts here on KZfaq, and help a new fan to grasp the massive universe that is Star Wars. There's just so much to take in, that it can be overwhelming.

A lot of different types of ships in this movie the massive Star Destroyer was a Executor-class Super Star Destroyer pretty much anything larger than the normal Imperial or Republic Star Destroyer would be classed as a Super Star Destroyer this being the only one we see in the movies. We also saw the B Wing the oddest-looking starfighter in the Rebellion one of my personal favourites. We also see the A Wing which is an Interceptor to counter the Empire's Tie interceptor one of my favourite ships love the overall design. Almost all of the large ships of the Rebellion are of Mon Calamari (fish looking people) design when they joined the Rebellion they brought alot of their ships with them. These ships actually act as Skyscrapers they point up from underwater making up their cities the large bumpy parts open up acting as windows. We also have the Nebulon B the ship with the skinny bit in the middle which Luke was on in the closing shot of Empire Strikes Back. This ship was built for the Empire but the Rebellion ended up stealing and buying a bunch of them which is very common within the Rebellion there ships and vehicles are taken from everywhere and anyone they can. I cannot wait for you to get into Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith (The Clone Wars Era) you'll love the ships of the Republic many of them being precursors to that of the Imperial and Rebel ships you see in the original movies such as the ARC 170 being the precursor to the X-Wing, V Wing being a precursor to the Tie Fighter, and of course one of my favourite ships the Venator-class Star Destroyer being the precursor to the Imperial Star Destroyer. We also have the nearly formed CIS faction who are made up from a wide range of species, planets, and companies who provided the CIS with vehicles, ships, droids, and weapons one of these factions being the Trade Federation from episode 1 who are not apart of the CIS but many members are which is why you'll see Trade ships in the next movie along with a lot of new ships, vehicles, and droids from the many factions within the CIS. The CIS is very much like the Rebellion in a way just wish the movies didn't make them out to be full on evil something the Clone Wars show dies deep into talking about how's the good and bad on each side the CIS main goal is to break away from the Republic as they feel that the Republic has overlooked them. Summed up you'll most likely be reminded of some ships from the original trilogy while watching Episode 2 and more so Episode 3. But yeah i agree 100% not my favourite of the movies wasn't a big fan of the 2nd Death Star should've just gave us something but it's still a fun movie just no where near Empire Strikes Back which was unexpected in every way possible opening with a ground battle on a snow planet in a series up to this point only known for its space battles to the Empire actually winning in the end and that I am your father moment.

"Oh... hello, Leia!" Yes, yes, yes. That's how all male fans of Star Wars reacted with 'bikini' Leia. If you've seen TV's Friends, that seems to be how Ross reacted to it as well. "Is that the bounty hunter that brought Han in?" Yes. Its Bobba Fett. Even with few or no lines in these original trilogy, he garnered a lot of fans -- too many that the producers capitalized on it in terms of toys and a backstory. There is a current TV series "The Book of Bobba Fett" which is a major part of the Star Wars universe now. But that's in the future of your reactions... there are so much more to learn/digest at this stage in your Star Wars journey...

1. Best guess is that Han was "Jabba's guest" for about a year and a half before the rescue. 2. Vader discovered Leia as Luke's sister because he could feel it in Luke. Luke didn't know that until just before then. 3. Luke's light sabre is green because he lost his old one along with his hand so they decided to make it green because it worked better in the desert background landscape. 4. Everybody is freaking out because Luke and Leia kissed mostly because she was trying to piss off Han. They didn't know they are related. 5. The "I love you. I know" was written into the script to get Leia the shot to say it to Han. 6. This was Warrick Davis'/Lead Ewok first acting gig. He was only 13. Willow is his lead with Val Kilmer and worth a first time/share. There's your Fantasy.😎 7. Obvious CGI with the race through the forest. Nobody in their right mind would go that fast. 8. Vader knew about Leia because he can read Luke's mind because of the dark side of the force.👿 9. A little cheese with Han's reaction to Leia telling him Luke is her brother. 10. This is the best of the original George Lucas Star Wars. After this he sold it to Disney and everything changed. Sadly

I was about 11 or 12, and my local cinema showed all three films back-to-back. Me and four of my friends went, and it was an insane day. I got through about 4 massive boxes of popcorn and probably 3 litres of Coke. There was like a 10 minute bathroom break in between each one, which was pointless. A 400-seater cinema, with only one gents and one ladies restroom: the math failed.

I remember when the first time I saw Episode III, that Anakin's Love for Family was stronger than His Hate. After all He became Darth Vader to try and save Padme and He turned back into Anakin to save Luke. Because when the choice was The Emperor or His Son, He chose His Boy. Love was simply something that Evil Manipulating, Megalomaniac, Sociopath of an Emperor couldn't understand. Who could blame Anakin for being Depressed and Lonely believing His Family was All Dead. Talk about taking His Pent Up Anger On Everyone in the meantime. Well He finally did something to make His Kids Proud Of Him. I can imagine Him Kicking Himself for not realising who Leia was, She's so much Like Her Mum. As soon as Leia learnt how talk to Him, I'd imagine plenty of Conversations between Anakin, Luke and Leia. Starting with the Twins asking "What was Mum like?"

This was my favorite of the Original trilogy for so many years. I liked the more mature Luke Skywalker, who had become well trained in the ways of the Force and I liked both Vader and the Emperor as the dual villains of the film. Finally, I loved how it was Luke's mission to redeem his father, not to kill him. Today, though it ranks second behind Empire Strikes Back.

Tie-fighters (the small ships of the Empire) can't go to hyperdrive, but the ones the rebels have are called X-wings and they do have hyperdrive. It's also possible the Tie-fighter that Vader had (it was a different shape) did also have hyperdrive. It's not really a matter of size but of cost. According to the fandom wiki a hyperdrive could be added to a regular Tie-fighter but it would cost more, add weight and slightly reduce performance both because the extra mass but also strain on the computer system.

The Anakin we see in this replaced the old version, George Lucas did re-edits (you know about this, added CGI and stuff, just to fully complete his vision) For some reason, he added Hayden Christiansan (anakin in the prequels) as a force ghost instead of keeping the original actor for Darth Vader under the mask And it's very confusing starting with 4-6 and seeing the young Anakin. Also, in a story sense, showing him as he appeared when he turned to the dark side and not him when he died, like all other force ghosts.. it's just not my favorite edit from George

I can see the substitution of Haden making sense for both the audience, and story reasons. Originally, the actor was Sebastian Shaw in both cases, he played Vader for the death scene, and comes back later looking like his Jedi compatriots and joining them in their goodbye / thank you to Luke. It signifies that on some level, even if the rest of the galaxy won't know or recognise it, Anakin found some level of redemption before, during, or after his death. However there is a problem, most viewers could originally make the association that the third ghost to appear would be Anakin at the time of release, but there was still some confusion especially since Sebastian Shaw as Anakin looked dramatically different then he did when he died, and the audience had never seen him before he became Vader (yet). This would actually get worse over time, as Shaw died in 1994, so much of the future audience might never see him in other roles to recognize him, and thus not associate the ghost to the dying Vader since they might have only ever seen the actor in the one previous scene. With the release of the prequels, the audience would have an idea of what Anakin was supposed to look-like pre-Vader, so it made sense to replace the ghost in the next re-release of the movie. Many would have preferred that there was no changes at all or the original version of the movie was easily accessible in some form, but with regard to the "we want to fix it up and re-release it" mindset Lucas got into, I see updating the ghost as a reasonable change. Aside from clearing up some confusion for the audience (who have, or will see the prequels) there is a decent lore reason for the change as well. Vader was "born" after Anakin was nearly killed, and much of him was damaged and / or replaced with robotics (Obi-Wan brings this up in this movie: "More machine now than Man"), so Anakin himself might not have an idea how he looked (or was repulsed by it) and so in a situation where he might have some control over how he looked, he would return to looking like he did before he became Vader. Others have suggested it could also be metaphorical (and fall in line with Obi-Wan's point of view speech) that in giving up his anger, hatred, and other emotional anchors that bound him to the dark side and the emperor, he was "reverted/restored" back to the form he had before he made the fateful decisions that led him to be the Emperors slave. Summary: He's a ghost, he can look like whatever he wants, and nobody wants to see wrinkled up life-support Anakin-husk again if there is another option. In the original movie he looks like the healthy version of actor that played him, after the edit, he looked like how the audience and anyone who knew him last saw him by being portayed by the actor in the later made movies. There are good reasons to leave the original, but quite a few good ones to make the switch, so they did, and it makes it "fit" better with the other movies, although leaving it as-was would not really have been a problem either.

One of my all time favorite fantasy novels has 17 books but is still being written. It's call "The Dresden Files" by Jim Butcher. He plans for there to be 22 books I believe with the last three being the apocalypse. If you enjoy reading fantasy at all please check them out. Dresden is an amazing character. The first couple of books are a little slow but by the third one oooohhh buddy you are in for the ride of your life. Dresden is a fully fledged Wizard and he actually is advertised in the yellow pages as such. The world doesn't believe in magic but it exists. FYI, if you're an audiobook fan, the voice of Dresden is being played by Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He does an amazing job. The great news, most of these books/audiobooks can be found at your local libraries. He very popular! 6.5 Million copies sold! The books included things like (Vampires, Angels, Biblical Characters, Werewolves, Gods) you get it. I'm rambling. sorry

He has also written for Marvel and is the first guy to find Thor's hammer in Thor. B5 ran for five seasons, in the Nineties and has several tv movies, and a rabid fanbase. Strazinski, conceived of the series as books on film. Each season is a book and structured that way. The pilot movie and first season are good but rough, however, season two hits the ground running.

@@AwesomeUSMovies Disney bought the rights to the Star Wars ip. from Lucas and then they created the ST (sequel trilogy) without any input from him. They went in a completely different direction than Lucas admitted he would have gone. So in essence the ST was never supposed to happen (at least not the way it did). Another thing about the ST is that the ep. 7 and 9 were written and detected by a different person than ep. 8, who later admitted that the ST would probably turned out to different (/better?) if they had a plan from the start.

I think they should have kept it not Hayden Christensen; but the original actor in the original scene. Governments don't topple that easy as I doubt the people the Emperor put in power would give it up so willingly and quickly; which is why the Rogue Squadron Books make more sense with Imperial Intelligence still controlling the main planet of Coruscant. Also, when there was no music playing, the audio was still left muted much of the time. And, although editing can be a bitch, cutting out the conversation between Luke & Leia was unfortunate. Also, as Darth Vader was Luke’s father, so was Anakin. That’s who you see with Obi-Wan & Yoda @ the end. Lastly, if you could raise the film audio would be great! I have to raise it to hear what’s going on, but when you speak, it’s blasting. Hopefully, in future reactions, you work out these kinks. Stay well &... MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU 💫⭐️🌟✨⚡️
