How to EQ a Kick Drum - #AscensionTechTuesday - EP042
This week, Chad shows the basics of Kick Drum EQ with basic starting points and concepts. He's using the Logic Pro X Channel EQ but these concepts can apply to most any DAW, Digital Mixer, and some Analog Mixers.

The low pass and high pass filters are essential to getting your instruments to sit well in the mix. Anything in between that is a personal choice dependent on the musical style that you are working with at that time.. But to keep your mixes clean defo look at the low pass and high pass filters first.

For attack, between about 2k to 5k usually does the job. For people that don’t know, for a live sound situation this gets added to your foh tops. As subs can’t reproduce these signals..

With a low pass filter on the kick sent to the foh of course.

love your vids bro. I have one q. What do you recommend instrument volumes should be before they are plugged into the mixer. Should they all be set halfway or at full volume then controlled via the mixer?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 7 жыл бұрын
Generally, I prefer the instrument be at full volume, (at least for soundcheck). That way you have the best signal to noise ratio and also you fully know where you headroom will be when setting gain. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Chad

Hi, Thank you for awesome video. By the way, for your analyzer why are you putting that on Post instead of Pre? Isn't it supposed to be pre to see the original eq of the sound and adjust it?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 7 жыл бұрын
It defaults to post so you can see the effect the EQ is having on the signal.

Which mic was the "OK" mic that you used for the kick drum?. The reason I ask is because I'm going to be using a Sennheiser e602 for my kick and I'm wondering if it's just going to be "OK" also. That's how it came off when we were test firing it anyway. It came off a little too clicky and boxy with not enough low end boom, but we still have to experiment with the bass drum tone and then the EQ to try and get it right
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 6 жыл бұрын
Looking back on it, I think this was a Sennheiser e602 or e902. Pretty sure it was a e602. At the time of making the video, I thought it was a kick mic from a cheap drum package. Now, I believe they had added this to the package to replace the stock kick mic. Not a bad mic by any means. The mic will only get you so far. The tuning, and deadening of the kick will make a huge difference in the tone and sustain. -Chad

I watched a few of your Drum Mixing videos ... especially the "How to EQ" various drums in a kit ... and it got me thinking. U are using EQ to isolate that specific drum sound from other drum sounds that might be being picked up by that drum mic (say the snare mic picking up toms or hi hat ... and EQ to limit the sound of that mic / input only to the snare). We use a Roland electronic drum kit with only Stereo out. We have All the Toms and the Kick Drum going to the Left side ... And all the cymbals, hi-hat and snare going Right. BUT this got me thinking ... couldn't I "Y" or multi split that stereo R and L send into 4 or 6 inputs on a digital mixer via 'Y" adapters ... and using EQ ... couldn't I then EQ each of the 4 or 6 channels so each channel / input only "hears" certain parts of the left or right send ... say one input being EQed only to hear the Kick, and another only to hear the snare ... etc ... kind of like simulating 4 or 6 mics and then mixing to taste. Seems like this might actually work giving us more than 2 channels (mics) of drum control as long as we didn't leave out any frequency or overlap too much in the EQ. Any thoughts?

Hey Michael! I love the idea unfortunately it's not a perfect solution. There's enough overlap where you wouldn't get true isolation. Instead, it would be worth investing in an upgrade to your electronic drum "brain". There are models out there that have 4 to 8+ outputs. If you'd like pricing options, please feel free to email me at TechTuesday@AscensionWorship.com Luckily, with electronic drums, a lot of the EQ has been done for you on the individual cymbals but it is definitely nice to have more control at the mixer :) Thanks for the comment. I do really like where you're going with this idea. -Chad

Well i got the new presonus SL 32 Series 3 monday and by Wed had the stereo R panned for cymbal/hh/snare and L panned for toms/kick (as we've had for years) but using Y cables i split those 2 channels into 4.. Played with the eq.... And while u are correct it's not perfect by any stretch, it actually worked better than I would have thought. Snare channel still had cymbals, but muffled, and Tom Channel still had kick but without the deep lows.... But the cymbal channel isolated almost perfectly... And the kick channel, with the fader panned mostly to the sub was awesome. I will throw on some compression and it should sound pretty decent. Mixed together the 4 channels give me a good sound with a whole bunch more control options than 2 channels . Overall I was pleased and pleasantly surprised at the outcome of this experiment... as a new brain would blow our budget right now. Nothing ventured, nothing gained ;-). Thanks for the tech talk videos.

My thought (not exactly an answer to your question) Would be would be to pound the drum set so that it’s natural. Either from the drummer’s perspective or from the audiences. I always do Drummer’s perspective. So HiHat is far left, first Tom is it about 9 o’clock, second tom is just a bit to the right, like 1 o’clock, etc., etc. This gives the listener a realistic impression of the music

By removing low mids that muddy up your EQ, you will generally get a cleaner, punchier sound. Also, by boosting some of those mids around 3k, you will get more cut in the mix. Also, check out our compression and gating videos as they will also help with what you are asking - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jsucererup3Wgn0.html -Chad

2 approaches: -1- Differentiate between attack and sustain. If your bass player uses long, sustaining notes, try emphasizing the low end of the bass and focus the kick more by emphasizing the hi mids (the attack). Depending on their playing style, this may be the other way around. -2- Invert your EQs. This can be similar to Approach #1 or it can be complementary. If you find yourself boosting certain frequencies on kick, cut that same frequency on the bass and vice versa. Make sure you aren't doing a lot of the same boosts on both instruments, especially in the low end, or else you will have a hard time creating clarity. Experiment with these and see where you get :) -Chad

What does it mean "two microphones on the kick"
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 6 жыл бұрын
It's pretty common to place 2, sometimes 3 or more mics on a kick drum. Often, a boundary mic will be placed inside of a kick drum near the batter head to pick up the attack of the kick, while a dynamic mic will be place just inside of the sound hole to pick up more of the body of the kick drum. -Chad

Why is it everyone promotes EQ'ing a kick so it sounds like someone is spitting in the mic? It's not what a well tuned kick sounds like.
