Why did the US not land their fighters in Hawaii for the last round? Would likely have been able to defend the crucial VC in return for losing the useless fleet.

Love these videos overall - and I hope in later tournaments, there is an opportunity for longer videos with more of the strategy. I understand keeping it short, and the live Q&A later to discuss more - but there might be an appetite for longer videos with the audience.

Wait, scrolling through your channel this seems to be the first play-by-play series? It's incredibly well made! I was invested for both games and even seem to have understood most of what happened even though i never played axis and allies. I hope something like this can become a regular format but if I had to guess it was a lot of work. Still, it's crazy that we can just watch incredibly deep discussions of a board game with such a high production value on yt. Some things about living in this time and reality are really not so bad after all :D

In a weird way, that initial hammering in Russia helped you I think. It made the Allies shift to try for a Germany first plan, but then they split their focus with Britain and the US which was not a good move. What you said in the round 1 video about focussing on one direction really hit home here. The Allies just kept splitting their focus, causing failure of action.

I got A&A in 1984. Me and my friends played endless hours for many years. I still have my original game. This video popped today and all my old memory's came back to those days. I new they made newer versions but didn't realize all the new units and land changes they made. I may need to drag out my old game and play with my kids. Maybe get an upgrade. Thanks for a great video.

That missing fighter is very frustrating. This is why judges (and discretion) is important, instead of dumb letter of the law. It's like starting a chess game, and after 2 moves you realize you're missing a rook. Obviously you place the piece, and anyone with a modicum of sportsmanship would allow it to be placed. You had far more grace than I would have had.
@hoosierflatty6435

Ya those other dudes just should've let it on there. Maybe the rule should be that all players have to check and sign off on the pieces prior to bidding.

While I understand the frustration, don't forget that the players who were playing the Axis, checked the troops of the Axis. As such, they had a chance to catch and fix the mistake. It this particular case, I'm 100% on board with letter of the law. If it had been a case is which the Allied players checked the Axis troops, then I would agree that putting the plane on the board was the correct move.

Love the continuation. Love how this showed that initial challenges with bad (even disastrous) rolls CAN be overcome (sometimes) with strong strategy. Looking forward to the next edition. After the quality of the Russian opening round, I feel the Allies missed a golden opportunity to capitalize and go all-in on crushing Germany. U.S. waited too long to mobilize and should have gone heavy into Germany instead of Africa when they did. The U.K. player didn't seem to have an overall strategy other than turtling in India, and honestly, the Allies' last round makes no sense. It's as though they didn't know what the victory conditions were at the end of the last round of play
@BoardGameNation

I agree. Russia should have went for the juggular. The allied players should never be invited to this again as they seemed completely lost on how to play. I wouldn't trust them to play a normal game much less this tournament format.

Great video. What I learned 1. Check everything in preparation. Then recheck and crosscheck. Sometimes you do need accountants. No point in having a great bid only to lose it all by not checking initial placement. 2. Be prepared to switch strategy. If crushing India isn't working because India is overdefended then the Calcutta crush IS working but move to their other weak spot now they have shored up this weak spot. Was it 'division of forces' Napoleon called it. 3. Reduce redundancy of units. Buy it to use it. Everything an aircraft kills points or a tank picks,up free cash it is paying for itself. If it sits somewhere doing nothing it isn't earning any interest on the investment

I’ve just started watching these videos and they bring me back to my childhood playing this game. I am a little dusty on the rules, but I have a question. For the British final turn, wouldn’t it have made more sense to throw all of their air power against the German troops in France? Couldn’t they have significantly softened France for an American landing? Sure they would’ve lost all their planes, but they weren’t getting another turn anyways.

It looks like they are playing a more long term strategy, something for a 10-12 hour game instead of 5 hours. Yes, that is a mistake, but it is likely what they are more familiar with. The MMA has a great saying for this. "Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face." The full impact of this means, that people go in with a plan, but if things don't follow the plan, they typically fall back on what they know best and are most familiar with. The military version of this is, "No plan survives contact with the enemy."

Brilliant analysis and coverage again guys. Im so glad I found this channel and these videos. Your explanations and graphics are top notch guys. I am also very pleased that you were able to overcome the unlucky battle in Sovient Round 1 and the missed Japanese fighter (I actually think your opponents were a spot mean not letting you have the fighter but rules are rules I guess). Thanks again, Wes.

I wonder why on UK 5 the British airforce didn't attack France to try and soften it up for the USA 5 attack? The attack on the German navy seems unnecessary since the game would be ending at the end of the fifth turn. Thanks so much for these videos. The tournament rules provide a very open, mobile game, as opposed to big stacks circling each other on the Eastern front.

There was ZERO push across the channel and tanks still suck as artillery/men are better as 2 units instead of 1 using exact same transport. Mirroring reality in WWII, artillery, infantry, airpower, and submarines won WWII with a helping hand from the code cracker boys... oh yea and the utter insanity of a few nations declaring war against the #1, #2, #3, #4 largest countries in the world... I mean what the HELL did they expect to happen? @@winoodlesnoodles1984

Amazing job you guys! Your A&A 2023 World Championships coverage series has earned you a sub from me. When I first played A&A decades ago, I loved it (partly due to being interested in WWII). The game was a pain to set up, so there were not many chances to play against people willing to take the time with it. Anyway, I began to play both sides to see what the best moves may be, and react to the moves with the next "player." I never thought you could calculate winning percentages on a battle. When the game first came out, they did not have artillery, destroyers, or cruisers. Battleships were the kings at 4,4 then. I believe there was only one winning condition for the allies then, to take Berlin and Tokyo, and hold both until the end of the turn. I am certain the rules have changed a bit also. Just watching you guys plan out your victory and remain in positions where you could counterattack was impressive. My heart sank for you when I saw the end of Russia's first incredible move. Given a start like that, the allies should have kept full pressure on Germany and keep you guys from dictating the game. The UK did not do enough on the western front to help pinch the situation and set the table for America. Dont know what was going on with America. They seemed satisfied with watching the game instead of playing it. They did nothing until they realized Hawaii was in danger. Kudos to both of you for advancing to the semi finals.

i'm glad that you were able to win, even with an additional -10 handicap. there is an example from a recent top-tier chess tournament, where magnus's opponent was 3 min late in a short time control game. of course the clock starts running. that's completely fair. what does magnus do? he sits on his first move for 3 min. that's sportsmanship. it's clear that the allied players here did not "have their eye on the ball". there is a VICTORY condition, and a short time control. the americans MUST be able to prepare a turn 5 punch. they didn't. all of your analysis is spot on.

Will you be making more opening strategy videos? I'd probably make a UK video next (skipping Germany at first) and have it branch like chess openings. Depending on Russia's opening and how it went (and Germany's probable reaction to it), perhaps discuss two main lines and a couple of general ideas. Next make a Germany video which basically becomes defensive/conservative Germany and aggressive Germany. You can then discuss both it's first turn (reaction to Russia) but especially Germany's second turn and overal idea keeping both main scenarios in mind. The following video's for Japan and USA can follow this common structure. Mostly reactive to the previous turns but with a general idea in mind. It would be nice for these videos to find one or more top online players, and maybe find good openings and much seen ideas for either beginners and experts.
