Havent played this since the 90's. Fun, but yes took forever. Often we didnt finish because of time. I remember once, I took my turn, had to leave for 2 hours for an errand (instructed another player to step in for me), and when I came back was surprised that I hadnt even missed my next turn 😂

I don't mean to bash the Axis player needlessly, they're better than average, but his play wasn't particularly high level: too many straight up mistakes and very questionable moves. There's at least a thousand players on 1 of the online versions of the game that are clearly better than them.
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation 4 ай бұрын
@@simon-pierrelussier2775 It is true that our opponent in Round 1 has a pretty rough game. Still, I wouldn't directly compare the best online players vs the best face-to-face players. It is a different set of skills. Of course, a rookie vs an expert in either direction would lead to the obvious outcome, but veteran player vs. veteran player is likely to have a significant advantage on their home turf (so to speak).

The format was great! The overarching board shots, coupled with the focused battle and battle board shots as well as the purchase stills, were excellent and beat shaky video that is often from a distance. The running commentary on what was occurring, as well as what you were trying to accomplish, was terrific and made for an easily understood watching experience. Well done. Oh, and I learned a few tactical tips as well!

Just finished watching, want to say this was an excellent presentation, one of if not the most watchable playthrough of a boardgame I've ever seen. Looking forward to watching the next games, and would love to see this strategy really put through its paces when the dice go another way. Also just wanted to ask if it's typical for the allies to wind up with a whole extra sub? That, along with taking out the German bomber in Ukraine to save the British fighter in Egypt seems absolutely devastating to Japan. I'm used to playing allies with weighing my prospects of going into SZ37 with 1 sub, 1 fighter, and 2 cruisers, not 2 subs, 2 fighters, and 2 cruisers. Completely different math there!
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation 6 ай бұрын
So glad you enjoyed it! This was the only time in this tournament we saw a bid of Allies +6. If you want to see the math go the other way, you are definitely going to want to watch the next games. We had some unbelievably bad rolls! Thanks for watching and the wonderful feedback!
@z000ey
@z000ey 6 ай бұрын
@@BoardGameNation truly, I don't see why one would bid to get Axis?!? Is it just due to the 5 hours rule? Cause a good Allied player should be able to consistently win over Axis (lose some games due to early bad rounds, else it is a win), and giving Allies 6 IPC over their start is crazy (as they're stronger even on a zero). Especially as that sub in India gives a possibility of a very strong hit on Japan prior to Japan being able to do anything (basically a Pearl Harbor reverse), and yes you had some luck but also lost both Borneo and New Guinea early that gave Japan some 15 IPC extra that he might likely not have at all.
@simonhibbs887
@simonhibbs887 6 ай бұрын
@@z000ey I suspect it's for the same reason it's easier to get games as Allies online than as Axis, because most players favour Axis. That's not because Axis is more likely to win per se, I think it's because Axis is easier to play. At high level play the game is well balanced, but for less experienced players Allies play is more complex strategically than Axis, so it takes longer term planning and it's easier to miss something or make a mistake as Allies.
@z000ey
@z000ey 6 ай бұрын
@@simonhibbs887 absolutely agree, playing UK is a whole level over other nations, and US is also easy to make a crucial mistake in transports going around. Still, as this was a World Championship I expected the more experienced players actually bidding to GET Allies, not Axis :D

Battle report couldn't be better - extremely clear about everything. That said, this sort of outcome is why despite A&A being my entry to wargaming in middle school, it almost never comes out. By the end of British turn 1 the IPC situation is so tilted Axis can just concede (unless they think they will have like three rounds of scorching dice). If the game were really easy to reset, fine (I guess...), but it's obviously not. I also cannot imagine why anyone thinks the Allies need any MORE stuff, let alone 6 IPCs plus adjustments on initial set-up - but then again I'm not playing at this level. Maybe they are disadvantaged that much.

I consider gary and doug friends, and have had the pleasure of winning an earlier iteration of this tournament in 2019 with doug as my teammate. We've spoken for years about moving b-gaming to a level more like e-gaming, where there are personalities, characters, stats, live broadcast games with commentary, tournaments, etc. Catan and Twilight Imperium have some of this content, and now so does Axis and Allies. Thanks to gary for making it happen; it remains on my bucket list to win a tournament with Gary as my teammate--axis and allies competitive play has introduced me to some of my best friends, and I often travel to see them.

nice video...some thoughts from me...not sure why the axis would give up a 6ipc bid on an already pretty well balanced board. I thought that was the first tactical error made by axis...also, i think it may have been better for germany to do a tank rush, as west russia was below average (normally have 6 or 7 inf surviving), which means a ukraine stack(8inf+6tanks...abandoning africa)+karelia mini stack (4inf+aagun), and baltic inf to belorussia...r2 ukraine counter attack would be a 50-50 battle that is profitable for axis (note: a 4 inf 2 tank buy would tip the odds in favour of soviets to around 75%... thats why you do this purchase...it deters a g1 ukraine stack). it also would force allies to choose caucus or west russia to defend, and possibly allowing germany to stack west russia on g2... going all 6 into sz7 is a good play if Germany does not build any planes on r1...don't want to risk losing them... i think attacking the uk destroyer in g2 was a mistake, those 2 fighters should have instead been used to attack ukraine (with battleship bombard+guys from italy and bulgaria), to make the west russia battle more dicey..i think he should have also ignored archangel, and made the west russia stack bigger... 13 ground is good r1 purchase for germany, as the 11 germans can reach moscow in a r5 attack (which could possibly be the last round of the game?).. save tanks for r2 and r3 and planes for r4...

I disagree about tank rushing in tournament play. A tank rush gets Caucuses incom/IV and rolls Moscow, but not fast enough for it to matter in a tournament . Germany’s only focus is to hold France/Italy/Karelia/Berlin. To that end it needs to push away the Allies navy with air and stack infantry.

Showing the IPC value of unit losses as well as the territory net gain/loss IPCs in each player phase was very helpful in understanding the final outcome. Is this review about you & Doug playing as a team together or a critique of another teams play? Sorry if I missed that important tidbit of info.

Great stuff! I used to play this game, many times, back when it was a very simple risk like game. Obviously, many changes/updates have been implemented. I suppose though, it's like fighting as the Confederacy/Union in the Civil War, barring some unforeseen catastrophic upset....history loses/wins respectively! The Axis can not win the war in 1942, without a tremendous stroke of luck. I imagine it is considered the "high water mark"... Anyways, great series, looking forward to the next episode. All the best. Cheers.

Very cool. Glad to see it. Surprised to see an introductory edition being used but w/ time being a huge obstacle it's a fair compromise. Knowing most A&A die hard enthusiasts tend to play more complex versions that require more time I was curious how they would handle time @ a convention & the introductory edition is a shorter edition. Kudos!

This video is well done. I played some A&A back in the 80s-90s and enjoyed it for what it was. Sadly this video shows the real downside of very light strategic war games like this in that it just takes one terrible bout of dice rolls and you can essentially end a game that took a while to break out and set up. You just don’t have the ability to absorb an awful turn and be able to bounce back from it many times as you could in an even slightly heavier game system. This can lead to frustration from new players and I remember just having friends quit games because they saw no point in continuing and then they just never really wanted to play it again.

Thanks for replying. I used to be a massive fan of HP as well. Until he banned me, from his comments section on his channel. For saying Low Luck is better than dice, bc dice make bad strategies look better than they are. Or make great strategies look worse than they really are. I also said that the young generations don’t know how to make things like our forefathers did. I would include myself in with the younger generations. And Hilltop got upset with me about that, I told him he’s gone PC mad and we had a little argument. Nothing that bad was said, nothing personal and no swearing. I did say that he should take criticism on board like a real man and learn from it, no matter how disagreeable and distasteful it is for the recipient. Those were my actual words and then he started threatening me with banning, which is like waving a red flag to bull. I told him I’m not one of his pupils that he can manipulate and bully and I said, “What are you going to do? Cane me over the game board, I expect you’d like that?” And that was it, he banned me and made a snotty little video called Please be nice, the Crybaby. 😭🏞 Anyway if you know him please tell that I promise to be nice from now on. Ty.

As the germans we always build a factory turn 1 as far east as possible. Followed by 10 infantry each round for the rest of the game and using spare change to buy fighters. We also build a Japan factory or mainland round 1 and pump tanks into russia While using the navy to slow and stall. Made it near impossible for us to beat the axis.

I agree, in silver and gold play I often see US send it's Atlantic units to attack Europe or Africa even in a KJF. You won't see it in high gold or platinum though. Moving the US Atlantic fleet to the pacific is a key move in a KJF, otherwise the US is burning IPCs on transports, and if the Atlantic US transports are staying in the Atlantic that probably means they're dumping the starting eastern US land units into Europe and Africa. That means US has to build more land units for the pacific as well. That drastically reduces naval pressure on Japan.

The classic is a great game! For folks with attention issues, I suggest starting with the 1941 version. It has a more compact map, fewer units, and plays in a couple of hours. I play an old AAA edition with family around twice a year. Regularly with four players, we just take our time and make a day of it. Usual theatres do the usual thing, Germany trying to strangle the USSR, the USSR pumping infantry and needing the US and UK to divert German resources. Japan working itself in Asia and trying to delay US focus into Europe, or capitalizing om a distracted US when opportunity hits. We have a lot of fun, the randomness of the dice changing success and failure enough to keep it interesting. Love this video, thank you.

I think the high random variation in the game is a plus personally. The first turn is like a random scenario generator for the rest of the game. You're never in the same situation at the start of turn2 two games in a row even if both sides try to employ the exact same strategies.

A very enjoyable video for Axis/Allies gamers. Do more! It is a shame, however, that the roll of the dice so favoured the allies that the war was virtually decided in the first round. And that naval battle by Britain against Japan in the second round was totally devastating. This game can be very frustrating when the dice throws destroy your heavy pieces early on. (Of course, the same thing happened to Japan in the real war at Midway in 1942, when the Americans destroyed the Japanese carrier fleet in one encounter, so I guess art imitates life.)
