Thank you for watching our Semi-final match! What did you think?
@danielpayne1597

I think y'all clutched up in the biggest way! Those opponents were no joke, that amazing USSR T1 sure went pear-shaped quickly after that. Came down to the last battle, I watched with baited breath. I also think one of the only feasible ways to combat a Thorpe Thump (TM) is for Germany to win in Africa and blitz through UK territory, softening India's production and power projection. Then Japan can stave off the USA a bit easier and reinforce Asia just enough to maintain footing.

Excellent video. Your videos are always very well done and professional. If i may suggest - if you ever need ideas for content, it could be cool to see an actual history of the war done as an A&A game, perhaps in 6 month increments?

I appreciate your professionalism and ability to be clear and succinct. I’ve watched other A&A content where it’s a 15 minute on one country’s turn. There is no continuity where I can see the whole game. I also appreciate you staying on topic for the content I came for. Other channels are filled with bad jokes and stories that are off topic. This was my favorite A&A video other than your video on how to play all the rules in one turn.

I think Germany focusing too much on infantry is what cost them the game. A lot more firepower could have been brought onto Moscow with tanks.
@davidHellbound
@davidHellbound 6 ай бұрын
I was going over the German rounds again and I wonder if that strategy could use additional efficiency with their buys/placement. For example, in Turn 3, they bought 2 tanks for Karelia that eventually went to Moscow. INSTEAD, imagine they bought 2 Infantry for Karelia + 2 tanks placed in Berlin. With that, the 2 Berlin tanks would have made it to Moscow by turn 5 and so would the 2 infantry in Karelia. That gets 2 more units (Infantry) into the Moscow battle that they didn’t have in this game.

Exactly right. Axis played more of a traditional game. As soon as it was clear that the Allies were not going to Europe in round 2 or 3 the Axis should have bought more tanks and fighters. They would have the same 9 infantry for the assault on Moscow regardless. 2-3 extra fighters and 3-4 extra tanks make a huge difference in winning perctange for the Axis in that battle.
@NYCFenrir
@NYCFenrir 6 ай бұрын
@@Metaguy8443 The other thing I thought of would be for Germany to build a few transports to force UK to build in the UK rather than India.
@davidHellbound

Lots of mentions here about Germany. I think offering alternative strategies only goes so far since ‘we weren’t there.’ Instead, for learning, I’m going to accept their strategy but build off it. Like…, in Turn 3, they bought 10 Infantry & 2 tanks. Yes, we can debate all day an alternative purchase, but unit PLACEMENT is an excellent lesson here: They put 2 Tanks in Karelia that got to Moscow in Turn 5, & 10 Infantry in Berlin that maybe got to Karelia by Turn 5. INSTEAD, (love it or hate it) take the same buy, but place 2 Infantry in Karelia and then 2 tanks (+8 Infantry) placed in Berlin. With that, the 2 Berlin tanks would still make it to Moscow by turn 5, BUT so would the 2 infantry in Karelia! That gets 2 more units (Infantry) into the Moscow battle that they didn’t have in this game. That placement efficiency each round can net you many more units in the Moscow battle.

Looks very well played from both sides. As a new player, I am curious why Germany wouldn't make more tanks early (rather than their stacks of infantry) if the general situation is the game only going to round 5. It seems like this would alter the game drastically and especially with the allies focusing on japan you would want to be able to get all of your units to moscow by round 5. Is this simply a mistake is there a reason why this is not as strong as it looks?

Gary, this video series is sensational, arguably one of the best tournament reviews of A&A ever, and it will arguably become a top classic in the genre. 1942.2 is not my favorite (fighters moving from Moscow to Japan in a single swoop, c'mon), but this is much fun and understandable, given 5hr time constraint. The way you organize and edit your match reviews is definitely the best and will raise the bar in terms of A&A video making! Epic! Congratulations on your efforts, and thanks a lot!

Despite how things turned out, I believe the correct play after the first four turns of the game would have been to transition from a kill Japan to kill Germany strategy. Doug seemed to suffer from the same flaw that so many great Generals have in the past, which is falling in love with your initial "perfect" strategy, causing you to become inflexible to change when opportunities present themselves (or when enemy actions necessitate that you reconsider). Even with the U.S./U.K. outplaying Japan in the Pacific (the positioning of naval units at end of Japan 3 was a massive blunder), if Germany had made a better purchase in round 3 with more mobile offensive units, they would have had a serious chance of taking Moscow on the final turn. On a side note, for the final match I think it would be informative for you to show the overall shifts in income for each faction alongside material losses at the end of each round. Showing IPC loss of units without the gains/losses in income paints an incomplete picture, especially in the early rounds when income is so relevant. In this game for example, it seems like the Allies were trading poorly for most of the game, when in reality they (the UK in particular) were strong enough economically that they could afford the losses. Overall great content. Appreciate the work that goes in to these videos, and looking forward to the finals

There are many great comments in the chat concerning Germany’s infantry purchases and unit placement. In addition, I think that Germany giving up on Africa and sacrificing its transports was critical, because it allowed the UK to bankroll an expensive air force and swing into Asia, without having to divert any resources to protect their African cash cow. Tactically, I believe Japan blundered by prematurely shuttling their navy to the Philippines, which allowed the allied 1-2 punch to easily sink them. Had they hung back and built up for a turn more, they could have potentially swooped in to counter, or at least been able to reinforce the mainland. I also believe Doug and Gary deserve praise for sticking to their strategy of going after Japan, despite the setbacks they had in the Pacific in T1. You guys understood that the synergy between the Allies is greater there and put on a clinic in Asian warfare! All in all, some really top notch content from the BGN team and a tough fight by their opponents. These games keep getting better and better. And remember kids: when in doubt, submerge it out.
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation 6 ай бұрын
All good thoughts. I think our opponents played really well against a tough strategy in a challenging environment. However, with perfect hindsight, if the Axis would have played with a greater focus on efficiency, they could have brought more to the fight in Moscow. Certainly enough to have forced the Allies to mount a greater defense. Enough to win? Maybe, maybe not. Thanks for watching!

This was so exciting to hear recapped. Every turn is nail baiting. I think the only way to beat this is if you see Britain's buys go hard offense in India Japan needs to put a manufacturing center in Manchuria, skip the transports (and the navy) and do a 1-2 punch of land units in China with fighter support being produced on the Japanese mainland. You expect to lose the phillapines, but you plan on holding Asia and perhaps cleaning up Moscow after an unopposed Germany buys a little more optimized with the Turn 5 slam in mind. I'd love to see what you two come up with to defend against this strat in the future!

To avoid moving the same unit twice, my friends and I implemented a rule where moved units MUST be layed on their sides. Aircraft are out upside down. Since we’ve done that there have been no more double moves! At the end of the turn, the moved units are put back up.

I’ve been watching you guys for some time, and it feels good to see you guys finally starting to get some long overdue recognition! Your videos are of a very good quality and deserve way more views. Couple of questions: with the announcement of the anniversary edition being reprinted do you plan to do some similar content with that version or is 1942 your favorite? Also, this format seems to be doing really well! Do you think you’ll continue to do these “battle reports” for axis and Allies games? If they take too long to be sustainable, you could maybe do battle reports on the online version? Lastly, I think we’d all like to see you and Doug have a game against each other!

Thank you for your support! I love all those ideas! I would love to do some content on Anniversary. I don't own it (yet). So, I have only played it a handful of times. Doug, on the other hand, is a beast at the game. We will definitely keep making A&A content, but I am wondering. Any other games you be interested to see in this format? Thanks again for watching and all the support!

Great game guys! Way to roll with the punches and not panic. Germany recovered well after some bad luck but really seeled their fate by first not using their sub against the transport and destroyer. He lost a critical fighter and didn't take out the transport (which cost him critical end game units later). Then, there is a bad purchase on turn 3. I feel after you can comfortable hold one of Russia's industrial sites you really need to pump artillery or tanks out it. My preference on artillery. I find a lot of good players under utilize artillery. I know my planning has gone well if by the time I am invading Moscow 2/3 of my infantry is paired with an artillery. In my opinion the rest of purchase turn 3 should of been tanks.

Great commentary! Question: Is there no Japanese strategy where they build a factory in china? I'm not up to date with the rules, but in the classic game it was a feasible strategy that freed up the transports to go island-hopping while still putting 3 land units a turn into mainland china.

Building industrial complexes in the version is allowed. They cost 15 IPCs and have the some limitations are the original complexes. However, in tournament play, they are a bit to slow and they become big targets for the enemy. A complex in Manchuria can be taken by the Soviets or the Americans. That become really hard to recover from. Now... building a complex in Manilla.... 🤔 Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and subscribing!

I just love this "max 5-rounds" concept for the tournament. What prevented me from playing before was the time it consumes to complete a game and this immediately alleviates that. It also prevents "slow" play, which can drag out a game into a real slog, with too many dice at the end, when everyone is tired of having played the game for hours. I really wish the community would push this "max 5-rounds" style of play. Get the online version of the game to embrace the concept, as it makes the game much more fun. Two humble comments on the now infamous "Thorpe Thump" strategy. As UK: Without the extra units, usually gained by bidding, that initial UK attack to get the Japanese Battleship coming from Australia and India with everything is SUPER RISKY. You might win 60% of the time, but that 40% failure can be devastating. Without extra units, I find I need to spend money on naval units on turn 1, just to have "backup" navy protection, should that 40% come to pass. I wish I could afford to be as aggressive as UK is in these videos. As Russia: It's a cruel, cruel ride as Russia. I have yet to see the optimal play for Russia in this strategy truly outlined. Buying things like tanks and fighters on turn 1 to send east to China, is a luxury I can rarely afford. I try to maintain pressure from the north using the "mighty 7" amalgamation in eastern Russia, but inevitably, I sometimes wish those units were in Moscow by turn 4. It's fun to talk about how US can arrogantly buy Bombers every round, but I wish you guys focused on just how difficult it is to keep Russia alive in the Thorpe Thump strategy. Love these videos, some of the best A&A videos out there, please keep up the great work and know you are drawing new fans and rekindling old fans of the game with that hard work. I hope that makes you guys smile, I hope part of the reason you do this, is a love for the game and a desire to see it thrive. If that is the case, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

This was great! I love these. I know this takes a lot of work to recreate for the videos, but it's awesome to watch. I am not sure how to stop the Thorpe Thump. I'm inclined to say they should have gotten more land units onto continental Asia or even tried to press that initial set of luck they had there. But that is risky and may not have worked. Ultimately their best chance to win would have been being more aggressive against Russia. Buying less infantry and more planes, as well as not losing that fighter to the destroyer (which was a useless move) could have made the difference in the last battle. I can't wait for the final round video!

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and subscribing!

It is no problem at all. We have definitely made mistakes. So, I appreciate folks out there double-checking the work! No electronic devices are allowed table side that would assist the players in the game in any way. We can bring written notes and use notepads to do math. We can use our phones to take pictures, set timers, whatever, but no calculators. Doing the math table side is the single biggest difference between online and face-to-face play. Looking at the board, counting the units on both sides, and making a decision while the clock is running, your opponents are sitting right there, and the world championship trophy is just a few steps away is a very different experience when compared to online play with 24 hours to make move from the couch. I like playing the game both ways, but I don't think people understand just how different they are. Hope to see you there!

Lol at the double moving Japanese infantry in SE Asia! Glad to see that we aren't the only ones who have things like that happen. Very interesting how the game changes with the tournament rules. The submarine duel! Lol 😄 The Germans bailing out of Africa at the outset, really aided the British in allowing them to turn their full attention on the Japanese, IMHO. I love the Thorpe Thump! At a cursory glance, it's real obvious that the Germans getting to Moscow in 5 rounds would be the counter balance. I also think the Germans being able to hurt the British economy in Africa and the middle east would serve two functions. Namely boosting the German income to go after Moscow, while at the same time cutting the UK budget on what they can spend on putting pieces in India and/or flying from Britain across Africa to the battle in asia.

Exceptional play all around. I think the German player made ONE mistake that mattered--the infantry purchase T3. To get into Moscow T5, you must secure West Russia or Archangel and hold it T4, and follow that up with sufficient panzers & planes. That 30% chance of success could have been closer to a coin flip, or forced the Allies to deploy the USSR units differently to give Japan some breathing room. Wondering if Japan buying a transport T1 instead of the 2x CV would have served it better in the long run. That makes the US fleet scarier earlier, though.

Glad you are enjoying the series! Most of what we have been talking about can be effective in casual play. The only adaptation for the Thorpe Thump specifically would be this; the US can slow down by about one round. They can build for another round before setting out for the Japanese victory cities. The extra time can give them the opportunity to truly press the Allied economic advantage over the Japanese. We also talk more about this in the live streams. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

You had close-to-1:1 trades in the early rounds, but Allies produce more I think. So the evaluation of a 1:1 trade comes down to, how far have Axis come so far.
