The comic showcases very well that nothing obscures Azula's path to any sort of redemption more than her own pride, and the values that Ozai instilled on her, and that she embraced. Azula believes that power is the measure of how worthy you are, and she believes that failures are unacceptable. These are the major obstacles for Azula to understand and embrace the value of love instead of just fear, and to also admit once and for all her own vulnerabilities, her own insecurities, and all the bad things she has done. She doesn't want to be weak. Without giving spoilers, I'll say this: even when Azula actually does a good thing, she has to justify it to herself through her warped ideas of power, fear and weakness. Azula is a fascinating combination of contradictions. In some level, she knows how messed up her actions and beliefs, but she is (at least for now) too proud to entertain the idea of actually changing those beliefs, and recognize that she needs others too, and that she wants a loving relationship. She would rather blame others than face the truth. She is almost desperately clinging to a worldview that does nothing but keep pushing people away from her. In some level, she resents that she is a "monster", and also believes she is doomed to be like this. Ultimately, these values of power as the ultimate goal, and that any weakness deserves to be shunned, are burned so deep in Azula's psyche that it will be extraordinarily hard for her to change them. It's like Aaron Ehasz once said: any kind of redemption with Azula would be an ever harder and more tortuous arc that Zuko's was. It would be very different. This comic is really Azula Alone. This means that while the story doesn't make any huge change to her character (it would be extremely rushed if it did, imagine if Zuko had really changed who he was at the end of Zuko Alone, though the experience undoubtedly stuck with him for the future, and I think this comic subtly shows the same for Azula in its ending), it is a fantastic examination of who she is, with incredible nuance, all sides of the coin (Azula is neither 100% evil, she is a victim of Ozai, while she also is far from a helpless victim, she did a lot of terrible things that she must own up to, they are her responsibility, Ozai is not an excuse), and Azula having to face her dreams and fears. Faith Erin Hicks is amazing writing Azula's character, and I also loved Peter Wartman's art! The comic is a great foundation for Azula in future projects in Avatar Studios. Let's see how well Mike and Bryan will follow it eventually. Regardless of what they do though, the comic is an amazing character piece on its own. And it shows the mess of contradictions that Azula is. It will still displease some fans because that's unavoidable. The ones who think that Azula was just a victim who didn't do anything wrong are gonna be pissed, and the ones who think that Azula is 100% evil are also gonna be pissed. Some people will always disparage anything that doesn't fit their exact vision of the character.

I'd argue that Azula, till near the end of the series, actually does have one huge moral 'excuse', or at least mitigating factor. She was a child. A literal child. People forget that because of how powerful she was, but she was 14 during the series, barely older than Aang. Sure, all of those children grew and matured through out the series, but it's not really reasonable to expect a child to be able to do that all on their own, nonetheless while under the thumb (or at least power of) someone like Ozai. She's done things terrible enough that it's not a mitigating factor that would mean that much, but in an ideal world she would be put in a place where she could get help, and a lot of it. At the end of the series she was committed to an asylum, so bonus points for Zuko trying, but she needed more than just that given what issues she had and, at least from modern day perspective, what they understood about medical health is leagues behind modern stuff, and current understanding is honestly still pretty crappy and very poorly handled by most such places. Actually, in some ways her stay was probably better there given Zuko very much pitied her.

I love how this comic showcases so well the mess of contradictions and conflicted feelings that Azula really is.
