You might know this classic song from the final scene of Breaking Bad. Pete Ham wrote this and plays George Harrison's old Gibson SG (the same one George used on Revolver!) for the main electric guitar part
The guitar tone has a distinctive effect on it, which is tape flanging. Also known as Automatic Double Tracking, a technique developed at EMI with the Beatles. I'm recreating this tone with my Strymon Deco pedal!
The song is in the key of B, and the acoustic guitars play a G chord with the capo at the 4th fret. It's possible the electric guitar also had a capo here, but I assumed Pete played it normally. You can see in the music video for the song (it's actually a mimed TV performance) that Pete plays it without a capo very comfortably
Joey Molland, their lead guitarist most likely played the guitar solo, and the lead guitar closing the song. He either used his Gibson SG or Firebird. His guitar also has tape flanging on it
There's a difference in the tape flanging on the two electric guitars. Pete's main SG part has a longer delay time, while Joey's has a very short delay time. This short amount is called zero point flanging. You'll hear this on a lot of records, like Itchyoo Park by the Small Faces. It sounds like a jet plane. As opposed to Pete's which is more like a very short slapback delay
For Pete's flanging my Strymon Deco delay time knob is around 1-2 o'clock. For Joey's it is around 8 o'clock, at it's shortest delay setting
A cool part of the guitar solo that I discovered is at 2:31
After picking the high E note, instead of then picking the F sharp and bending to G sharp, he slides his fingers over to F sharp without picking. It almost sounds like a slide guitar, but with all of that overdrive and sustain he was able to forego picking the F sharp and slide with this left hand right from the E!
I'm playing my 1970 Gibson SG Special for the electric guitars. This is a real vintage Gibson, albeit with P90 single coils instead of the humbuckers in their SG's. It's plugged into my 1965 Fender Bassman amp
For Pete's SG i'm using an Analogman King of Tone on the drive side, into the Strymon Deco, into the Bassman. For Joey's SG it is the same, except I'm using a JHS Morning Glory V4 to boost into the King of Tone
There are two acoustic guitars on the song, panned left and right. The left acoustic is a 12 string, and the right a 6 string. For the 12 string, I'm using my 1967 Gibson B-25-12. And for 6 string, my 1969 Martin 00-18. Both are capo'd at the 4th fret

I enjoyed that saw them preform that at a local High school auditorium in my hood in 1971.Sitting 1st row ( Lincoln High, Yonkers NY) Their promoter Pete Bennett also Beatles PR man from my neighborhood worked with my band from time to time (he gave me lot's of Beatle fan club + promotion items that night awesome!.) They used 1 -200watt + 1 -100watt Hiwatt's and an Acoustic 360 bass amp + a Ludwig drum kit, It was almost like a up close private concert. Great job thx's 4 the memories, Rock on ArtyThan ☆♡☆

About 3/4's full They did the Straight Up lp + a few others, no tricks Straight Up in your face, Guitar's, Drums + Vocal's no effects cept some Reverb on the PA the way Rock was meant to be. Not everyone was hip to them yet, you know. Shortly after that I caught them in a different role, backing George Harrison on Acoustic's @ MSG for The Concert For Bangladesh Omg! that's another story ♡☆♡

Great job covering one of the best songs ever written! Badfinger was so under rated but I'm still listening to Badfinger, Mountain, early Deep Purple, old 3 Dog Night and I stand by the belief that the very best music was written in the 60's and 70's and NOTHING written these days even comes close!! Sure there are a few good songs scattered here and there but nothing like what it used to be!! I'm going on 64 years old now and have been a guitar player for almost 57 of those and I've seen and heard a LOT of guitar players over the years and I must say that I could tell your attention to little details in that song when it's played correctly made me listen to it 3 times!!! I can tell you don't seem like one of those guys who says "it's close enough" when learning and playing a cover song. I'm the same way my friend! I want it to sound as close to the original as possible and I'm also a stickler about the beginning and ending of a song too because I want people to recognize what song I'm playing by the third or fourth note into the song if not sooner. Keep up the great work and whatever you do, keep on rockin' for sure!!

Sam, i purchased a cadine tuner and I have it set at 450 freq. (The highest range on it) and it's close enough for this song. So now I can just tune to center scale on the tuner consititly.

at the time of release, everyone knew there was a Beatles connection but it was a few years before I found out Paul produced this band. Well done Sam!!! I recently watch the Abbey Road documentary and would love to see you do the acoustic "Blackbird" complete with toe tapping!

Fantastic job, as usual! I guess I’m in the camp that thinks the electric rhythm part also has a capo. You really can hear it on the opening B/Bsus4 (G, with capo at 4) as well as the F# chords played as a standard D shape with the capo. And also the rock cliche walk down C C/B etc which makes so much sense with a capo. Could they have worked up a no-capo version for their live performances after making the recording? Sure. FWIW, Rick Beato recently discussed this song on his channel and he was confident about the use of the capo. Whatever the truth is - you played it “the hard way”, perfectly. Bravo - looking forward to more!

Yeah it would make sense with the capo, especially the C B/G Am walkdown. My reasoning for not using a capo is that it's easier to do the palm muting stuff without one on those stacatto chords. I'll check out Beato's take!

Excellent. Although not 100 percent identical to how Badfinger recorded it, we can be certain Badfinger never played it the same way twice, either, just as my signature is not perfectly identical every time that I sign my name.
