Welcome back to the Foxhole. They're celebrating 10 years anniversary of the first album and recently released a Gimme Chocolate!! challenge on social media. This was the first "Babymetal Death" version with MomoMetal as an official member and it was a come back song after December 2017 iirc. They did Babymetal Death Shin Version at Budokan 2021 but it's a way different version. Next month is coming Legend MM celebrating MomoMetal special birthday in Yokohama. I was at this show in the crowd screaming "Death! Death! Death!" and jump up and down like a maniac. Babymetal Death is the first song from the first album and also serves as the show opener for most of their live performances. The song serves as an introduction, which is why they spell out the name of the band, and the members of the group say their names; they are literally introducing themselves to the crowd. This performance was also Momometal's first night as an official member of Babymetal, so the crowd cheered particularly loudly whenever she said "Momometal desu!". The crowd blocks are always set up like this at Babymetal shows in Japan. The do it in order to get the crowd into the arena in manageable groups and also to keep them organized by ticket category. There is also an alternate version of Babymetal Death called the "Shin version" that is worth a listen. It might be the single heaviest thing in their entire catalogue.

Fun Babymetal fact: on Su-metal's 16th birthday, in the middle of the song, she was crucified, and ceremonly abandons her mortal form to be reborn a goddess. And detractors thought they were not metal 😂❤️🦊🤘

Although they now use this as an opener to their gigs it's worth watching the definitive version of this song from LEGEND 1997 - it's much darker and more theatrical - much darker !

For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉 OTFGK but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity: Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase. Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL. The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show. 🦊 🦊 🦊 🖖 ❤

Great reaction and yes, this song is normally used as an opener (up to 2017). This concert was from their first show after the pandemic and Japan was again open for live shows. If want to see what's considered the best performance of this song, then the concert "Legend 1997" (the 1997 refers to Su's birth year) and was from 2013 when she turned 16 (the other two were 14) on Dec. 20th of that year and the concert was on Dec. 21st. - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jatddql50b-1dWQ.html

Funny you mention As I Lay Dying as Ryan Neff the bassist has played in BABYMETAL's western Kami Band when Clint Tustin is unavailable. But not at this show. If you don't already know the western musicians behind BABYMETAL then who they are and what other bands they play in may surprise you.

In reality you would write it Babymetal Desu, but since it sounds cooler if they use Babymetal Death. This is their traditionelle Intro song. And it was originally made for them since they work with stage personas and this song helps them into their chosen Personas. But they couldn't really use it since 2017, but since Momo joined offically since April 2023 it is a Tradition again.

They had not played it live since 2017 because it is an intro song and they are introducing themselves by name, but they couldn't really use it with just two official members and the original third member Yuimetal didn't appear at all after October 2017 and officially announced she was leaving the band in October 2018. This performance was on 2nd April 2023 - the first concert with Momometal as an official member, so 'BABYMETAL Death' was back ... I don't know if you heard the crowd cheer particularly loudly when she introduced herself as "Momometal desu". The whole song is based on a pun. The English word death sounds to a Japanese speaker like the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means to be - as in I am, we are, it is etc. Basically the lyrics for this song are: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" ... "I am Su-metal", "I am Moametal", "I am Momometal" "We are BABYMETAL" ... "Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death". You got a hint of the sort of thing they do and the theatrics at the start of this performance when they play 'BABYMETAL Death' ... I suspect you would be blown away by the Legend 1997 performance where they were celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday. Being an introduction song they would normally play it right at the start of the concerts (it is a great way to get the crowd hyped and joining in straight away), but that was one of the special occasions where they played it later in the show - for that one it was the finale.
