Great stuff, this will be a fun series to follow you along with. You were absolutely right, this was their very first song (recorded at the end of October 2010 - Su was 12, Yui and Moa were both 11). The video was made on a shoestring budget nearly a year later ... they even had to borrow some of the clothes they used to make their own stage costumes. Well spotted with the little skeletons dancing along with them in the bedroom - there are 5 of them by the end of the video. Metal was quite big in Japan in the 80s and 90s (X Japan was the biggest and still revered - they sold out the Tokyo Dome 18 times, Loudness were a favourite of mine and one of the few who got any real popularity outside of Japan), but it was in a serious decline by 2010 when BABYMETAL started. You were right first time - BABYMETAL were doing something original and untried with their fusion of metal with the JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics - including the choreographed dancing of course ... and yes they were the originators and pioneers of Kawaii Metal. They did have two more songs and videos before 'Headbanger' (that was released in 2012). Their second release was 'Iine' (iine, not Line, but you probably knew that) and the third was 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai'. They played IDZ live before they released 'Iine', but maybe it was too much like straight metal and their producer Kobametal wanted to show they would not be limited to just one style of music so 'Iine' was released first.

Glad to see you check out my channel Grington! I've heard of X Japan, never heard of Loudness though, I'll have to eventually check them out on here! Headbanger, Iine, and IDZ are my next 3 videos I'll be doing for BM. Thanks for following my revisit down the Foxhole!

Really enjoyed your revisit, thanks! Yes, BABYMETAL are best enjoyed live, preferably in person. And It's quite an experience on a big format show in Japan. As you mentioned, they had no extra budged for the music video. I assume you already know their context at the time. Good job spotting the little skeletons, btw. Until next time! 🤘🦊

Great content, my man! I first heard Babymetal in early 2018 (unknown to me that things were in such disarray at the time), and it was "Gimme Chocolate" that kept showing up in the sidebar on KZfaq. When I finally was curious enough to click on it, I think I watched it three times be fore I was able to utter a word (especially as a life long metal head). I am 61 now, and I have never had such a good time listening to music! Heavy, cute, fun and inclusive for everyone! Took a five hour drive to see them in Boston last September, and it was awesome! I will be there with your Babymetal journey, and you most definitely earned a sub for this! Kitsune up, my friend!

It is also worth noting that BM is not only about their music and dance move. It is also about the members. They are considered "idol". And people in Japan, young or old, male or female have their own favorite idol. Each member already have their own fanbase even before forming BM.

Haha awesome man, glad to see a fellow Kitsune retreading the foxhole journey. I can be a pretty cynical and close minded person at times, and I didn’t have the greatest thing to say about Babymetal when I first heard Gimme Choco, then this song. A couple years later, I’ll be randomly doing house choirs and… “RING RING RING!!!” 🕺 Babymetal is an unstoppable force of awesomeness. And I’m glad I’m in the #notacult… I mean foxhole. 😂 🤘🦊

I discovered them late 2022 and became a giant fan, they became maybe my second favorite band (Dream Theater is my favorite so that says something about my musical requirements haha), my wife and I saw them back to back in Texas last year and I had built them up too much in my head. I understood this so I went into it expecting to be excited but kept expectations realistic. What I didn't expect was the emotional shock I got when they hit the stage. In Dallas we were maybe 6 feet from the stage (the payoff of going to one of their foreign shows, no giant production and stages, but you get very up close with them) and the personal crowd interaction they did was very very special and so fun. We got a smile and wave directly from Moa, she noticed the shiny shoulder armor (similar to their current outfits, my sweetheart of a wife made it for me) and was excited. They are a force to be reckoned with, the level of stage presence is almost something you can feel .. seeing the choreo, the entire choreo (videos of course only ever show snippets) live is mesmerizing, especially their newer dances which are a bit more adult and involves a lot of very precise quick movements I have no idea how they stay in sync, both shows both days they brought that relentless energy every song, it's inspiring! They make me laugh, smile, and feel young again, and they inspire others to go kick ass in life and work hard. Enjoy, don't feel like you need to rush through the catalogue (maybe you already have?) There are surprises around every corner!

It's always fun to go back to the start and see where it all started. If you're interested, the very first Babymetal performance ever is actually on KZfaq. It's from the Sakura Gakuin Festival 2010, which was their first ever appearance where they performed Doki Doki Morning for the first time - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9eddd1nq6ndYZs.html They were even younger at that performance than they were in this video, which was shot in 2011. Kawaii in the context that it is used by Babymetal is actually more than just the word "cute". In Japanese pop culture Kawaii is an entire aesthetic and fashion style. In addition to their blending of musical genres, Babymetal has also always been about blending fashion influences. A lot of their early outfits are in inspired by the Visual Kei metal subculture that was big in Japan in the late 90's and early 2000's. Babymetal have often cited X Japan, the most famous of the Visual Kei bands, and one of their main influences. Their stage outfits are a big part of their performance and often get overlooked as being important, which is a shame because clearly a huge amount of thought and effort goes into designing them. If you get a chance, watch the 2023 Babymetal Returns performance of DDM, it has a special surprise in it. You're absolutely right about the crowd interaction being a core part of Babymetal's performance. I've seen them live numerous times and the extent to which the crowd participates impacts the experience of the show tremendously. That's why Babymetal is always best in Japan, because the home fans are the most passionate and knowledgeable and know exactly what to do for every song, which elevates the energy of the whole thing. Conversely, when they go to some festivals or tour shows where the crowd isn't as knowledgeable or familiar with them, the energy isn't quite the same. DDM, by virtue of how quirky it is, is something of an acquired taste that isn't for everyone. It tends to be a favourite of the hardcore fans because of it's importance in Babymetal history and how cute it is, but people who are new to Babymetal are sometimes a bit taken aback by how different it is. It's kind of similar to how fans feel about Gimme Chocolate.

Wow, what an excellent informative comment, thanks for taking the time! Another mention of X Japan, I certainly need to check them out! I've seen the funny Nendo test videos from SG but not sure if I've seen the original DDM performance. I'm really hoping they tour in the US in 2025 so I can see them for the first time live, of course the dream is to see them in Japan one day!

BABYMETAL's live audience makes the songs 120% great. The acoustics are poor in small overseas venues and the quality is low. In smaller venues overseas, the acoustics are poor. However, I envy them because of the proximity to the girls. There are more than 50 sub-genres of metal music, and BABYMETAL is both the name of the group and the name of the sub-genre. BABYMETAL is both a group name and a subgenre name, signifying a newly created genre. BABYMETAL Guide 4:54 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/naqemJOp3NTNhJs.htmlsi=e9JK79kj2Y9h3YRQ

Just a piece of advice: if you really like crowd interaction, you should maybe avoid the Budokan 2021 shows. Since it was during Covid times, it had a lot of restrictions, including double masks for everyone attending, and crowd could only clap or jump: no singin and no chanting allowed. All the crowd ound you heard was on a backtrack, taht BM recorded from previous shows to keep the same atmosphere. THe stage though were awesome, and the girls did give the best they could!!

⚡ 💀 💕 / 💓 ⏰ Your memory is pretty good. “Ima nanji” means “What time is it now.” “Ima” is the “now” part. And let me add a vote for Loudness. I don’t know if you’ve heard Asterism yet, but their (very young) guitarist switched from drums to guitar because of their music. And she (HAL-CA) is phenomenal. Asterism will be the guest band for METALVERSE at the FOX_FEST that BABYMETAL is organizing in Japan.

Close. Baby Metal IS the name of the genre. It does not refer to the girls ages as most people assume, but rather the 'birth' of this new genre. Also, they started 14 years ago in 2010, not 10 years ago.
