From Dusk till Dawn reminds me very much of my battle with depression. The feeling of needing to just get through the darkness and everything will be alright, to not stop lest I be consumed by the darkness. The relief of the dawn, but with the reminder that the night is really over and gone forever. The ambiguity of the lyric feels that way too, can I explain what makes me feel that way? No. But here is how it feels.

That was really amazing. Thanks, professor. I agree with Jonathan about the intentionality of the ambiguous lyrics. They plan everything meticulously so this cannot be an exception. In my opinion, this fact actually adds more interest, some sort of mysticism if you want. About the theme, I believe that this is their nth iteration of the light and darkness allegory (although two years earlier)... starting by the song's tittle. And I'm in favor of "in the end"... because "in the end" the darkness disappear when a new day arrives ("The Sun also rises"). But this is art, so it's always open to interpretation and that's the coolest part. As you probably know, I'm not a native English speaker so, sometimes I activate the subtitles just to not get lost. And I can tell that they suck many times. Until next time!

I always enjoy your analysis of Babymetal, and this one is also a masterpiece! Thank you! I am a 74 year old Japanese living my 33rd year here in North America, and I did not know the word Yugen (幽玄) so learned a new word! Spot on. Also this song is one of my favorites, and in all of my 16 or so Babymetal Blurays, I do not have this song. I visited Japan this March and went straight to Fox God Metal and Rock Bar and asked the owner (ChiyoMetal) to play the 2021 Budokan performance. Saw it and I think I may have cried. It is definitely a Bluray I will seek in the future. I went to Fox God four more times before returning home. I had always thought the various lyrics on KZfaq was a little off, but having listened to your interpretation, I feel that I have found a deeper meaning. Your portrayal of this being in line with Haiku or abstract painting in the brain with music totally makes sense. For this I thank you! Many of Babymetal songs elevates one from a tough spot to a higher pro-active mentality. Count down to Oct.10!s

This is my second comment. After finishing the video now I have multiple ideas on its meanings. Others could be more than the others but I think it will be pretty interesting. I still got some videos to watch at this moment and probably have to type on a doc to post it here, but I think it will be fun. Here is one if the ideas they said could be is that it has no meaning but a feel, but I think it's a bit more than that, but idea can very much work. I will tie everything together in the next probably big comment. Babymetal has some very good meanings and have been in other communities who love games who have deep lore or just hearing history stories with meanings. Be back to type in the comments in about couple of hours or less. Thanks for anyone reading and hope anyone reading this has a better day.

My interpretation on this song is that it is conceived on the same story of Amore (and Syncopation). Su is the metal messiah and is spreading love around the earth flapping her wings and singing metal with her voice to bring fighting spirit to her Metal Resistance, that's the theme of the album. In this stage she is approaching the land of the dusk, America, and is going to the land of the dawn, Japan. She is in Japan in Syncopation. So somehow it's a calm night journey through the pacific like if she was the ISS. I always think the songs have several readings; sometimes mundane and about feelings and day to day worries and emotions, but you can also understand them in-lore if you look further among other layers. Read in-lore, From Dusk til Dawn, Amore and Syncopation would make a Trilogy of Love, when Su is spreading her wings around the blue star spreading love to her Metal Resistance (us, metalheads of the world united). But the song can also be understood on an emotional and personal way, like most of the people look for meaning in songs. It's a journey through our emotional night trying to reach the light again. As an example of the multiple readings you can make of the lyrics, here Moa and Yui/Momoko whispers would not be angel voices saying the messiah to stop sacrificing herself, but would make the role of the voices that tie us to the night and our dark stage (hard, no more, run away...). Until there is a point Su breaks it and continues on her road of resistance in the search of the light that's beyond the darkness of her night. Light and Darkness is also a theme in Babymetal that I have not put thought when it is about this song because I just realized (Dusk coming of darkness, Dawn coming of the light, liminal stages). But yeah, From Dusk til Dawn, just a chill journey through the night. It is nice to see a new Babymetal video from you Andrew, it seems soon they will give you some more work to do xD

I enjoyed your considered analysis and discussion on the cultural aspects of the song and music. However, Jonathan's insights into the psychological structure of Babymetal @53:20 finally answered why Babymetal is so important to me. Their impact on my life has been profound, more than any other organization. They are so empowering and a stabilizing force in the chaos of daily life.🤔🤘🦊 Adding to that impact is we only see the stage personae of Su-metal and Moametal. IMO "hiding" Suzuka and Moa's private lives (while disquieting to western fans) contributes to the power and influence of their performances. We're not distracted by daily challenges of their lives.🤨

Glad to see you back with another analysis of a Babymetal song and Jonathan was a great addition! FDTD is my number one Babymetal song for quite a while now, since it creates so many emotions in me and is kind of touching my soul every time I listen to it. The vocal performance of Su, whilst always amazing, is outstanding in this one and unmatched by any other artist. Especially the first lines of the song always make me question how she is even able to sing those (not to imply that she is lip syncing!). I already knew most of the lyrics but some takes from you and Jonathan made me rethink what I thought and heard and it makes perfect sense all things considered. You both were absolutely right about anything they do in their choreography is there to tell the story of the song and convey the meaning of the song to the audience despite some viewers may not be able to understand the lyrics. I think what makes this song even more interesting is the fact that there are not official lyrics, leaving space for everyone to interpret the song to their own meanings. Either way it is an outstanding masterpiece and in my opinion one of the best songs Babymetal has ever released. Kitsune up po 🔥🦊🤘

I agree. The emotion is often clear even if the specific circumstances which generate that emotion aren't. That's part of the appeal, I think, and why I'm comfortable leaving the final sense of what this song means open ended.

Hello from Japan. I can't even write a long sentence with my English ability, so I will write Japanese that has been automatically translated by Google. I am always impressed by your wonderful videos. In this From dsuk till dawn, there is a phrase that is very rooted in Japanese culture. it is a void( 虚空 ). The Japanese notation is "Kokuu". Kokuu means vague emptiness. In Japanese culture, when the sun sets in the western sky, it is said to "set in the void". It's too hard to grasp the meaning in English, so I rewrote it as follows. The sun melted into the air. I'll put it back in what the Japanese think is a poetic expression. Sun is going down in the are. I feel the background as above. Thank you.

I was at the Hollywood Palladium concert for the world premiere back in 2017. They really took this song to another level at Budokan for those two shows in 2021. I would have loved to witness one of those. There is one part where I hear: "In the air. Be aware." Which both rhymes and makes some sense. One of _many_ things I found very interesting in your excellent analysis and conversation was what you and Jonathan were talking about at the end. The combination of the directly cathartic, physiological effect on the listener of heavy metal (with the added somatic impact of the choreography, translating music into language of the body) , with the ethereal, transcendent vocals and positive messaging. It reminded me of something Ryan Mear said not long ago: "There's a type of universally appreciated melodic work going on but then you got this heavy stuff that draws you into it that you like too. So you get two things you really like in damn near every song and they're both really fucking good but they're both completely different things! (laughs) So there's got to be something dopamine-wise in your brain, you just get two different kinds of musical highs from the same song. The drummer's going a million miles an hour and there's like a really slow fucking ballad vocal going on... what is happening I love it! (laughs)

Great to see another video from you Andrew. I always find them interesting and thank you also Jonathan for providing another opinion. This is another favorite of mine. I gave up trying to figure out the lyrics. Apart from the great music I am just happy to hear how great Sue's voice sounds in this, especially at the start when she sings in that high voice, and before people start, I don't care whether that is her actual singing ability, or an effect they have put on her voice or a combination of effect and track. Unlike some, I enjoy the songs as they are, I know Sue is a great vocalist and if they add something to it that enhances the effect or feel then that's fine by me. I also like that for a larger than usual part of the lyrics, it is only Yui and Moa singing or just Moe depending on the time of the performance. I have noticed since Babymetal became only Sue and Moa that Moa is getting to sing longer solo spots that do not take away from sue and I love it, Moa has a great voice also.

Cooool, a new BM analysis! And with guest this time!! This worked very, very well, thank you :) There are a few places where I am not quite hearing what you guys are, but for the most part I think you've got it nailed. The most important point, for me, was one you made early on. This is a song, and what's more a Babymetal song, so the lyrics are going to be ambiguous and mysterious and might get twisted a bit to fit rhyme schemes/scansion etc., but there is absolutely no reason to believe the BM team would create a song with just BAD english, with grammar errors or just plain gibberish. Any transcribing that results in that kind of thing is just wrong on the face of it. In the end, it's got to make sense at least to a point where you could plausibly string the words together into coherent thoughts. And, for me, since the song is named From Dusk Till Dawn, and given the overall tone throughout the song, along with the dancing and the staging, it's got to at least on some level be translatable to a descent into a long dark night of the soul, with a dawning hope at the end. Nothing else would make sense to me. I'm sure there are a lot more levels to it than that, but I think at LEAST that must be present. To me, your lyrics satisfy both my conditions. Fascinating take. Also, that word, yugen I think it was? Beautiful concept, and one that seems to fit many Babymetal songs. I could be completely wrong about this but I always thought it was in part the very structure of the Japanese language that allowed them to attain that mysterious ambiguity. Perhaps the fact that this song in english is so hard to understand is their way to kind of capture that. Forcing the listener to feel the song rather than analyze it. *shrug* could be :) Any way, thank you for this, excellent as always!
@AndrewHartley

Totally agree. And yes, I think people hear slightly different things (and the various versions not song may vary) but the core idea is as you said. And yes, 'Ryugen' is a really useful concept for this and some other BM songs. In fact, I'm convinced it's part of why non Japanese speakers connect with the songs despite not understanding them in the instant and visceral way we hear our own language.

It is going to be interesting to see what we get at restoration 100%. I suspect it will be a new single or a new album. If Yui comes back that would be great but if she doesn't and they fully fill her spot with someone new then I am ok with that, because it will finally mean that Yui is not coming back and the speculation can finally end. Like so many others I miss Yui very much, but if coming back while her health is still low means it could do her more harm then I don't want her to come back, it is not worth her taking the risk. IF, she is replaced then I hope that The One will welcome the new girl with open arms. I certainly will.

Thank you for bringing Jonathan in! The interaction between you two was something to behold. Dusk til Dawn had been under my radar for reasons I don't really understand, but that is definetly going to change. Takeaways: 1) Your suggested lyrics make a lot more sense to me than Google. O.K., that bar is pretty low, but getting anything out of that music/soundscape is no small feat. "Don't stop moving while the sun is going down" made me think of Rondo of a Nightmare, where it is "All I can do is run through the night/All I can do is fall through the night" 2) The final remarks about the psychological effects of music as well as about the perception of beauty suggest that it is probably O.K. or even the preferred aproach to not bother about the lyrics at all and just experience the performance with every sense you got. 3) Almost en passant you made it clearer than ever before what Babymetal as an artistic entity really is. 4) The talk about beauty as a process that happens when the audience and the object meet, but can not be put into words, reminded me a lot of the discussion about "quality" in Robert M. Pirsig's "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" .Which is probably totally natural as Pirsig was heavily influenced by asian philosophy. 5) The level of this conversation was stellar, even by the already high standards of this series. As Robert M. Pirsig crossed my mind, I remembered the expression he used for places of learning, discussion and thought: "Church of Reason". I can almost hear you protest that this is too big for your "little corner of the internet", as you once put it. Could we agree on "Wayside Shrine of Fringe Knowledge", maybe? Doesn't have the same ring to it, though. As always, professor, thanks a lot for making me love Babymetal a bit more every day.

Hmm I am about half way through this video and the thoughts I had about this song for about month now seems to me interesting on what I think it may mean. When I finish this video I will leave response on what I think it is when I finish comparing other videos. I have been for about year been trying to get the meanings of all these songs through KZfaq video info, subs, captions, reddit, and amazing creators like A.J., I think atleast for my culture it connects with me. If I figureout with all these info I will make an updated post to see what you guys think. I also tried searching this video to get info about month ago and was like oh so it is very confusing song for many. So I just translated as something else to make more sense for his bit info you took on this song for one of his videos. I will give more info after this video ends listening a bit more after to thos videos I think could give me atleast my idea of what it is, but I think it's sad, deep, emotional, and much more emotions. Hope anyone reading this is having a better day.

Long time no chat. Thanks AJ for another fine analysis. I like to break things like this 3 ways. Audio only, visual only and the two together. First time I listened to it I missed half the lyrics. I thought that it was electronic synthesizer. Odd choice for BM. A testament to quality of Su's voice. Watching the video I realized I was missing vocals. This one is going to take repeated listening to fully grasp. Mostly agree with your analysis. Side note, I want to thank you for being one of several reasons I am now planning a trip to Japan. Learning the language, culture and customs. I can absolutely, positively, 100% say I cannot "read the room". Just waiting for the 2023 schedule to try to catch BM live in Japan. Understanding how little I understand hopefully will prevent me from tripping over my own feet while there. Side note 2 after watching your reaction to Elevator Girl I now hear the theme to "Are You Being Served" whenever I hear the song. LOL. Thanks again.

When you were speaking about the face/fake lines, and then also when you mentioned martial arts movements (fighting through the night) - I was surprised you didn’t connect in both cases to the Karate music video - which explicitly uses dual face imagery, and of course martial arts/fighting. As you noted, lots of themes in this song run throughout the cannon. - Randy, Reference Librarian, Babymetal Fan.

Nicely Done. Babymetal magic is what it is. Write a song about I know not what and it comes out and brilliant. Now add in the music to the song and the spell is cast. Total Metal Elf Magic. I think another possibility for the lyrics is that they have changes over the years. From the recording to the few live performances. Which would only make it harder to figure out what they actually sang. I loved the 10years of Babymetal shows. I think it was them showing a full display of everything they learned over the years. IMO Su has become so skilled she could sing the English alphabet and it would sound like an epic tale of old. And are dear Angel of love has become the Super Moa Chan she always wanted to be when she grew up. Kawaii, Mature Kawaii no longer matters they have surpassed such notions. Hi Professor Hartley, thanks for giving us a walk-through on FDTD. I think this is your best and, probably, worst video in your Babymetal series. The worst: because you and your wonderful guest, Jonathon, challenged every single thought I ever had on the lyrics of this song. The best: because you and your wonderful guest, Jonothan, challenged every thought I ever had on this song. There is so much to unpack from this that I don't even know where to start. I don't even know how to begin eating this elephant. However, what I will do is give you my thoughts on it, because, in my view, both you and Jonothan danced around the way I interpret FDTD, but never quite landed where my thoughts sit. I will keep it short (so you know that I will probably clock a thousand words or more haha). I agree with most of the heard lyrics, but I still put a slightly different interpretation to them. I feel they are meant to be sinister, dark, fearful, yet hopeful. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the brief given to the lyric writers when they were handed the music. I feel that both you and Jonathon were correct in implying that the song is a metaphor for a journey. Whether it is in a single night (from dusk, 'til dawn), or over an extended period from when the land fell into the darkness of despair and fear, through to the dawn, when glimpses of light appear on the horizon, and the hope of survival emerges. Or even a journey of self-reflection, personal struggle and the avoidance of negativity in your life. The lyrics fit several themes, just like any good Babymetal song does. However, I am going for a combination of the first two options. I feel that the song's 'presence' hints at an extended period of turmoil and pending defeat, where the only option is to flee and cross the border/borderlands. The border holds its own perils and is best navigated in darkness to stand any chance of survival. It is in the lyrics that the journey is on foot and there is the approach of night (dusk). The journey has been long (Never Ending Road; Walking There). I get a very strong feeling of homage to Chris de Burgh and his song Don't Pay The Ferryman in the next section where the lyrics point to their biggest danger, crossing the border (or getting to the other side, as in de Burgh's song). The lyrics "Don' Stop For Them", hints that to stop when directed would lead to peril, and Moa's "Sun Is Going Down" adds urgency to this thought (but hurry, we're losing the light): perhaps, the idea is don't stop, they will hurt you (and it is getting dark too, hurry). Su sings "On The Border, Don't Stop Walking" and Moa increases the urgency again by singing: "Sun Is Going Down" (Hurry). I feel this 'list' points to the purpose for the journey. They have woken to the need to flee in order to keep the dream alive, that the light is not yet extinguished. This is a very tangled call and response section and could have a several meanings. Then of course dawn comes, and they have successfully crossed, physically unscathed, if not emotionally unscarred. The key center changes and we get an overwhelming feeling that they are ok, that they live to fight another day. Perserverance, strength, belief and risk-taking prevails. I love this song and think it is one of my all-time favorite BM songs. From Dusk 'Til Dawn and Kagerou are probably my go-to's. Professor and Jonothan, thank you for such an in-depth analysis of this magnificent song. I marvel at how deep you guys go in pursuit of the meaning (no, I didn't miss the part where you digitally analyzed the audio; amazing commitment). Professor, I understand you taking a break from Babymetal videos for a while, I imagine these would be quite draining with the amount of work that must go into each these videos. I hope that someday Babymetal will complete their Restoration Project and give you some new material to dissect. Maybe, your Babymetal hiatus won't be as long as theirs. On a different subject, I note that it's heading into spooky season, I wonder if you have any Halloween thrills in store for us? I really enjoyed last year's installment. Thanks again for all the effort you put into your insightful and thought-provoking analyses. (Hmmm, under a thousand words, you got off cheap, hahaha)

Hi, here is my fourth post to describe what I think it means unless people ask in the comments. The fifth post will be on what the lyrics could be. Here are all the ideas I got and will be numbered. 1. The song has no exact meaning. It’s mostly a vague interpretation song expressing it with the feeling of the dance moves and song's atmosphere. Andrew Hartley said this specifically in a video that I don’t remember but wrote down and others online believe also with this statement and may be the most popular interpretation of it. However, for me I think it's a bit more deep and still has other meanings that can be taken away from it, while also fitting this statement. 2. From Andrew’s video with the guest Jonathan they thought the song can be interpreted partly as the lives of Babymetal being hidden or mysterious. This could make people feel confused if it is really them performing in a sense of identity. I could see this but, not so much as but partial meaning of the song. This leads into the third idea. 3. Andrew and Jonathon also stated that it could be a journey. I do believe it is a lot. I believe this is one of the biggest meanings of the song. I think it could be about life or the meaning of life. From the beginning of the day and to the very end. This leads into idea four. 4. The song could not be only talking about the meaning of life but specifically the struggles of it. The Light vs Dark. As mentioned by Andrew and Jonathon within the video the song seems Dark in feeling in the beginning but in the end the Light appears bright. The visuals also show this too. Babymetal is well known for this too. This leads into idea five. 5. The feelings of the song specifically. This part will be long on what it feels. This will lead into the fifth post of what the lyrics mean and what I think it means from all the info. Hope anyone enjoys these long posts lol. The song feels mysterious with slight eeriness within the beginning with light taps of sound to draw you in but not scare you. Like a mysterious welcome in like feel. After, the electric sounds come in with the drums to get more energy with that same feeling before. Sounds are very comforting to the ears like a cloud-like feeling. The song then breaks in with a choir-like sound and quickly into the rush of the music. Then, out of nowhere it gets calmer again in harmony with a cloud-like feeling with also “light lines electric sounds going straight down each time,” as best way to describe it. The drums come in soon after slowly. The vocals then harmonize very much together into all the instruments again with high emotion. You hear now the choir vocalization throughout the background that is probably Moametal singing with Sumetal singing powerfully bright with the instruments back a bit with more lightly. It gets quieter again but not fully with Moametal singing and Sumetal coming back into compliment both vocal harmonies. The instruments are now gone with Sumetal and Moametal saying certain important words after each other with light sounds in the background. The song next goes into Sumetal singing at a slightly faster rate like a rap like flow. The instruments come in and then the instruments start going very hard with the sounds with electrical sounds doing the same feeling with the instruments. Now this next part seems like the song is about to end and is coming to a conclusion with Sumetal singing a bit slow with high bright vocals. Finally the end part comes in where we are at the destination with all the happiness of finally getting there. The instruments are calmer and slower with Moametal singing more choir like again with Sumetal singing very high vocals brightly. The song ends with a calming feeling like the end of the movie with slight uneasiness that the journey may not be fully over, but will go through it once again another day, but for now can rest and sleep without worrying. Next info on comment 5.

Well worth waiting for, thank you. If I may make a comment about the Kami Band's role in this song, which I consider a trademark of many Babymetal songs. Sir George Solti long time conductor of the Chicago Orchestra, which was regarded as having the best brass section in the orchestral world, was reported to have said "Never look at the brass section encouragingly". For me that is a good description of the Kami band, no matter the the overall feel of the song when the band gets their "encouraging look" (Break section in 3/4-5/4) they deliver the goods as few other band can.

Glad that you're still doing these. In your discussion about how Babymetal are so enigmatic and always stay in character and never give the fans a sense of who they really, it reminds me a lot of a concept in professional wrestling known as "kayfabe". In wrestling, kayfabe means "maintaining the illusion" (of realism), and involves wrestlers always appearing as their characters and never letting the audience see them as their real selves. I think that while the idea of keeping Babymetal hidden when not in character started as a way to protect the girls when they were young from all the weirdness that comes with fame, over time it has evolved into an artistic choice that fits with the mystical and otherworldly quality that has been cultivated around them with all the Fox God lore. It works (as much as it might frustrate fans) because Babymetal are a performance art project as much as they are band, and weaving the narrative around and through their performances and appearances works to make them more unique as an act.

Very interesting summary. I know sometimes Japanese will use an English word for its visual aesthetic which may have nothing to do with the actual meaning or similary the sound of a word, that is a thought or feeling can be conveyed not through the word meaning itself but by it's sound or appearance. Bit like an abstract painting or the rhythm of a poem used to convey an image rather than just the meaning of the words.

Yes. Usually when they (and other bands) do that, it's a brief moment of 'cool' or foreign color. I think part of what makes this song unusual is that the whole lyric is English, so the language has to function as more than auditory collage. But yes, I think you are right.

Thanks to anyone who reads it and thanks Andrew if you read it and your amazing thoughts with Jonathon. Hope you like my main final idea in the very end of all the info. Hi, this will be my Third Comment and will describe what I know and what I used to get to my conclusions. The fourth comment will describe what I think are the meanings. Hope you like the idea of how I tried to bring the vocals and overall performance out more on my end to try figuring it all out. I took the time to review certain KZfaqrs' translations, non-translation videos, the older performance, Budokan 2021 version, and think about what I hear on these lyrics. Here is first the stuff I used to review the song before all the info to help me get the lyrics out more in different ways. First, I used the Fiio M17 Dac. The Fiio M17 DAC is the best most movable “Digital Audio Converter” at the moment, from many creators' perspectives and has some neat features that allow for more details to be brought out like the vocals and to work well with more high end headphones. I connected this to one of the newer MacBook Pro models with USB DAC Mode and also used it on its own, “size of a big phone and acts a bit like a phone that runs on android.” I don't know which model from the pro except that it was the last one to have the scroll touch at the very top of the keyboard. For the Fiio M17 settings I used “All To DSD” that is another format to listen to music from what I understand to make the song feel much warmer and comfort feel to not hurt your ears overtime when listening to music. This usually makes the Fiio M17 very hot so I have to use a fan since this format of listening hasn’t been fully optimized for phones to handle but only specific to DAC’s like the Fiio M17 that still needs lots of cooling. Then, I turned on “Enhanced Over-ear headphone mode” where it makes the “Gain” of the song louder or the sound louder specifically and to allow headphones to help clear up the space feel of the instruments and vocals at least to a certain extent. This also helps higher end headphones to run better, especially if they are hard to drive. My headphones that I am using are the Focal Clear Open Back. Open Back headphones allow you to feel like there is more space around you like at a more concert feel. These Focal Clear headphones are the original model since the newer ones are slightly different in sound. This specific headphone is known to make the vocals and sounds brighter. This means I can hear the vocals way more in detail than other headphones and with the other things turned on it can allow me to get closer to what the lyrics may be and sounds that were more accurate. The Focal Clear Original is also very well liked by the headphones community, at least around top 10 headphones in the world and are not hard to drive, so my device will work fine. I will also be using a special equalizer app that uses another headphone specialists' exact equalizer to maximize, specifically this headphone model to fix its other things missing on the headphone like the timbre quality maybe being off. Finally, I will have PO Balance Output and have a fast roll-off,linear phase filter to be more accurate sounds. For the English language it is my first language so help a bit more on what I think the lyrics may be. Thanks for reading on what I am using to get the more vocals out.

One of my thoughts on this song is that, just like Ijime Dame Zettai is an anti-bullying song, I feel this is an anti-suicide song. I may be completely wrong, but music and lyrics are subjective to the listener, are they not?

Interesting. I do think that there is a general pattern in a lot of BM songs about moving through the darkness and isolation toward morning (Brand New Day is an obvious one), and I think that while it's not expressly about suicide/depression, the general idea and feel suits it well. Somewhere official like a copywrite archive. So if you really wanna know and you are up for some light breaking and entering you could know definitively 100%. It is pointless waiting for an official lyric sheet as I'm sure Koba thinks people trying and failing to decipher the lyrics is hilarious. Anyway! A brave attempt guys. Yes, that's a good point. I also know singers who will deliberately change up a well known song in live performances so that the audience can't just sing along, and have to listen to it fresh. Love what you do, and the discussions, but I do think this song is purposfully ambiguous and intended to be and I don't know the right word here, but for each person to partake in the experience. I recall when Su in an interview was asked to describe Babymetal in one word and she responded "Don't think, feel". And I feel this song is the epitome of that ethos.

Yeah, I don't disagree. My brain needs something concrete to hold onto, an outline for the sound to color in, maybe, but I agree that that feeling/color is the most important part of a song like this. That said, I think Su's comment is about her own performance and audience response which assumes a basic grasp on what is being said. Most actors would say the same, but they still have to know what they are saying before they can focus on the feeling.
