I disagree. I watched Jaws kinda recently and it looks old, and slow and very boring at times. It’s a great movie still and I loved it when I watched it many many years ago. I don’t know about back to the future because I have no desire to watch it again, but Jurassic Park, or the Indiana Jones movies, they still look perfect.

I have met someone like that. A friend of mine doesn't like it because there are too many plot holes. Which is ridiculous to me. Sure, there are plenty of plot holes, but this movie isn't trying to be scientifically accurate or some crap. This movie is a light-hearted but expertly crafted thrill right, and it does that with perfection. Sometimes it makes up the rules of this universe on the spot. And that's okay. Although it doesn't even do that often, because almost every single thing that happens has been alluded to before, was a Checkhov gun, or is a brick joke. This movie is self-referential to the point of insanity, and that only makes it better and more rewatchable. Every little thing comes back later. Every throwaway line is important. Every silly little detail. And that's part of why it's so amazing.

It's insane that Alan Silvestri (Predator, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Abyss, Young Guns 2, Judge Dredd, The Mummy Returns, Captain America, The Avengers, etc...) has only been nominated by the Oscars twice: Best Score for Forrest Gump & Best Song for "Believe" from The Polar Express. The nominees for Best Score in the 58th Academy Awards were Out of Africa, Agnes of God, The Color Purple, Silverado, & Witness. You mean to tell me that not a single one of those bunch is inferior to BTTF's music? BTW, I do remember people saying it was strange that Chris didn't review BTTF in October 2015 like most other KZfaq critics did. He must've been really busy for that to just slip his mind as a film enthusiast.

About the whole “parents didn’t recognize him“ thing: who says they didn’t? Let’s say they DID recognize him. What are they going to do? Walk up to their kid and say, “Hey, son, this may sound like a weird question, but... you wouldn’t happen to be a time traveler would you?“ His parents don’t even know that time travel exists, so they wouldn’t have a reason to suspect time travel. I’ve met different people all the time who looks similar, and I just know it’s a coincidence. My parents would never confront ME about looking too much like someone from 30 years ago. So yes, it’s very possible that they realized their kid looked similar to the guy they knew in the 50s. But I find it highly unlikely that they would ever come to any crazy conclusions about it.

I think they would come to SOME kind of conclusion, but knowing how asinine the whole theory is, they would just let it go as the phenomenon that it is. One day, Mary might just confess the whole thing and his parents would be like "you know.....we always kinda knew. We don't know how, but we did." And that's a fine thought for me. It works. I wouldn't even really call it a plot hole so much as a loose end that you leave to yourself to wonder about.

Well there’s that but also they’ve been living with him all his life, maybe when he was 12 they said “you look like this Marty guy”. Just cause it’s Martys first time seeing the parents in this timeline doesn’t mean it’s their first time seeing him
@kellyevenorth
@kellyevenorth 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know why so many people are bothered by the so-called “plot hole” where the parents don’t recognise Marty. I feel like it’s fair to say the following: 1. They knew him as a stranger for about a week, MANY years ago. 2. The details of his face would most likely be a blurred impression for them in later years, unable to be anchored by anything concrete - not a yearbook photo, not anything. He straight up disappeared without a trace. They would most likely remember broad ideas, like that he had brown hair, or skateboarded, or played bizarre music, or acted strangely. Exact details of facial features would be lost. 3. They would still legitimately be able to remember the mysterious stranger who impacted their lives, and name their third child “Marty.” This would obviously be in tribute to the guy who helped their early romance flourish, NOT because their INFANT resembles Michael J Fox. They would have named him as a BABY. 4. Marty grew up slowly as a child in front of his parents. His changes through puberty would be a bit more imperceptible for those living with him every day. Their “perceptual set”, or the tendency for people to see what they expect to see, would not easily be able to discern when exactly their young son stopped looking like a seven-year-old child and started resembling a teenage guy they met once thirty years ago. Even if one day they woke up thinking, “hey, Marty is starting to look an awful lot like that guy we met”, this would be impossible to verify without photographic reference and could easily be dismissed. Memory is reconstructive and is NOT an exact tape-recording of events. It is easily altered and reworked each time those neurons are fired. There are no plot holes in BTTF, end of discussion

For the “plot hole”, the family and Biff lived through Marty growing up looking exactly like Marty in the 50s, they could simply have commented and noted about it as new timeline Marty grew up as a teenager before 17-year-old Marty returned. It’d be weirder if they actually commented about Marty’s appearance the day he returned to 1985 i think!

Back to the Future is my all time favourite movie, and a lot of it has to do with how tight the script is. There really isn't a wasted moment in it. Everything ties together. I'm also a big fan of the potential jokes when you have are jumping through time, since this movie has a lot of humour revolved around giving the punchline in 1985 and then setting up the actual joke later in 1955, so it's full of all those "aha!" moments. It's also just exceptionally well acted, the pacing is perfect, it appeals to fans of multiple genres, and never really gets old for me. I've seen it easily a hundred times in my life and I still love it just as much as I did the first time I saw it. I think it's the definition of a perfect fun movie. This movie is...Awesometacular!

Gonna date myself, but I was 17 the summer that Back to the Future came out. I went on a date with my first serious girlfriend and chose this movie for that date. We both came out of the theater totally amazed at every single bit of this movie. I've easily seen this movie 100 times since then, five of those times were in the theaters before it was pulled as 1985 came to an end. I don't think of my date that night so much as just the feeling I got when seeing this movie for the first time in the theaters. It was only the second movie that did that to me. The first was Star Wars when I was 9 and my dad took me to see it in the theaters.

I feel the same way! The first film I ever saw as a kid was E.T. It blew my mind! I had never seen anything like it. My mom took me and my brother in 1985....when it had been re-released and we saw previews for Back to the Future! I was born in 1980. Then...my mom took me to see Back to the Future..and even as a kid..the one scene that stuck out to me was the skateboard chase. I was mesmerized. I got to see both of those classics that summer! For me....the 80's and early 90's were the peak for movies. Indiana Jones, Back to the Future Trilogy, E.T, Empire/Jedi, Die Hard, Gremlins, Goonies, Jurassic Park, movies today pale in comparison.

My theory on the ending - the movie becomes intentionally spoofy after Marty arrives back in 1985. The last scene where Doc comes back with the Delorean to whisk Marty to the future was meant to be a joke ending - remember there was never going to be a sequel. Therefore the makers took a no rules approach and had some fun at the end of the movie.

@ 8:25 - This is something the screen-writers likely just overlooked but, thinking about it realistically, Chris is probably right that it would be HIGHLY unlikely for Lorraine and George to clearly recall the face of someone they knew in High School for one week, especially considering they had no photos of Marty from 1955. They might vaguely recall his face and notice a similarity, but too much time would have passed for them to be certain that 1985 Marty was a ringer for 1955 Marry,

In time travel, there are always paradoxes. The last time I watched this I decided that Marty and Doc know each other because Doc remembers Marty from 1955. I don't know what had to go down for them to be reacquainted in the 80s but that's neither here nor there. This is also the reason Doc has the confidence and drive to keep working on the time machine for 30 years until he succeeds: Marty's visit to 1955 proves it works and that he can do it. I've heard that this movie's screenplay is often held up in film schools as the example of "perfect." Loved your review.

This movie has been my favorite since I was a kid. There was a stretch when I watched it everyday after school for a long time. Brilliant from start to finish. From the opening scene of the automated dog feeder and the mega amp blowing Marty out of his shoes, to “Where we’re going we don’t need roads.” So many great scenes. Jumping over Biff’s car to land on the skateboard. Playing Johnny Be Good, jumping up from almost disappearing. The whole catching the lighting bolt at the clock tower scene. And everything in between. Also everything is so quotable and/or memorable. This held my number one spot until the matrix. Now they are tied lol

I love this movie, but the soundtrack to this movie is perfect. Every effect, every theme and motif is amazing. When I heard Silvestri’s “twinkle” effect while standing in line, from someone’s phone reminding them of an incoming text message, I genuinely got excited and nostalgic

I'm so glad Chris reviewed this, even if it was super late and kinda random! I was 7 years old when this hit the theaters. I vividly remember seeing it at the theater with my sister and her friend, who were both 10. Just us kids, got dropped off at the theater! No parental supervision or nothin! Those were the days. I remember looooving this movie so much. In fact, my sister and her friend were crushing so hard on Michael J. Fox that this was the 2nd or 3rd time they saw it! It became an instant favorite, although I do recall being scared when the music got creepy just before the Libyans turned on their headlights in the parking lot. Then, when they were growling and snarling at Doc and shooting- really freaked me out! Fast forward, when this came out on VHS the following year (back in the 80s, it took forever for movies to hit video stores, you really had to wait!) I was watching it with the family and was getting all anxious cuz I knew the scary Libyan part was coming up but I couldn't recall exactly when, so I just kinda braced myself! Needless to say, I was an anxious kid (and am still that way today in many ways!!!) Sigh, such wonderful times the 80s were. I know some of that is just my age and perspective (everyone tends to think the era they grew up in was the best, or the most innocent or what have you). But damn, the 80s DID give us some awesome movies. And TV shows. AND music. Oh, and let's not forget Garbage Pail Kids! Okay, now I'm just rambling. Back to the Future is definitely in my Top 5 favorite movies of all time!!!! Thanks Chris for your review and for being a great commentator and content creator.
