That downspout dumping water from the main roof really did a number on that window. I'm sure you are going to reroute that to avoid future problems.

Matt, you operate that little track loader like it's an extension of your arm. It's obvious that you've used it a lot and it shows. You will be so glad that the dirt was tamped around the exterior wall as much as you did. When our home was built in 2001 the builders just pushed the dirt into the hole and let mother nature do the compacting. We purchased the home with raised flower beds at an extra cost and within 18 months all 24" of extra dirt was below grade and we had to add 4-6 yards of dirt around the home over the next couple of years just to keep it above grade so that the water flowed away from the home and not into it, which it did for our first summer. We had a similar rotting issue on our home as you found in that corner and I would bet that a lot of the water came from the downspout which most likely overwhelmed the gutters in that area. That's a lot of water from both roofs channeled into that one small section of the gutters. Looking forward to the follow-on videos.

Backfilling is so satisfying to have done, like you said, not having a big hole to work around. Coming along nicely.

Making lots of progress. The backfill went very smoothly. Always a bit of unsettling anticipation, tearing into an older house--who knows what you'll find? The water ingress you found is very minor, I think. Looks like you can re-use almost all of that original Mira-TEC siding.

Miratec is good stuff if you prime and paint all sides. Never had an issue with it.

The basement entry bit felt like a first person video game!

i would have used the skid loader and dug a ramp in to the ditch and fill it with it. It would also help with the compacting. the water was clearly coming from poor guttering or clogged gutters. the upper roof has a down spout right above the rotten corner.

I'm removing Weyerhaeuser OSB based siding and going back with concrete fiber board. AKA, Hardie Plant. Oh yeah removing the styrofoam insulation and going back with rigid foam board.

Hypothesis on the water damage: where the (garage?) roof butts into the 2nd floor is probably not properly flashed, and that gutter probably has a history of holding debris. In fact, in the outro you can see a bunch of leaves caught in the valley above. So rain flows into the gutter and from there overflows into the corner of the wall. Figuring out the water damage is going to be the difference in how long before the addition needs repair.

Have Donovan build you a shop for the sawmill, telehandler, skid steer, and the log trailer. You use some of the boards you cut from your sawmill as siding for the shop.

24:01 The amount of water hitting that corner window from the addition roof slope and the 2nd floor down spout really accelerated the corner rot below the window..

I designed a set of concrete form for a cast in place window well for egress windows. Other types of window wells have high transportation costs requiring them to be manufactured close to the final destination. They also frequently get damaged during backfilling and transportation. Windows wells cast integral to the walls eliminate a lot of those issues. Of course aluminum forms wouldn’t work in this ICF situation.

Matt: I almost panicked when you were showing pictures on the video of the window and door purchase that you had already done the framing. Now I see that you are doing it in sequence. I am in my 70's and can't do it myself any more but watching you is great. Sorry about the rot in the corner.

I can’t believe we’re not seeing at least a cameo of Lindsey checking on progress.

I would have put up as much of the framing as possible before stripping to minimize the amount its exposed to weather. Just cut a recess strip through the siding with a circular saw. Put the framing up. Then You can always put a tarp over the 2nd floor joists for rain. Once it's weathered in enough, you can strip the rest of the siding.

Seeing that rot in the corner I'll be interested in your strategies to avoid further water intrusion. I eagerly await your next installment. This is more interesting than watching wood dry. 😁

Part of the water rot over the window problem is the down pipe feeding the dead end gutter on the roof next to it. 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍

I was kinda wondering when you put the spray foam under the icf blocks, is the foam a "non expanding" type or something like that? I would have thought the spray foam would lift the blocks up screwing with your critical height and levelness of the blocks... Cant wait for you to saw a hole in the old basement to cut a door into the new area!

The "workmanship" over the door in the corner is what we call over here in Yorkshire "a "tuppence ha'penny job" (two and a half pence) which is another way to say it's a cheap job but, specifically lazy workmanship.

You should have moistened the backfilled soil to achieve a 90%+ compaction Your 6 inch lifts were appropriate

Something wrong with the carb on that plate tamper it should not serge like that at all under power. Get it checked out. It will run better and give more power.

The rotted trim is not Miratec, it looks more like LP Smart Side. Miratec doesn’t won’t absorb water and swell like that. Regardless a good lesson, keep water away and let the building be able to dry out when it does.

26:51. That water damage was caused by the gutter drainage design from what I've seen so far. gutters get filled with leaves and water overflows and gushes down and into window. This will be the worse water damage of the entire house.

That seems like an awful lot of work (and expense) to gain a small amout of extra utility etc. Watching Donovan work it's blatantly obvious he knows his stuff as he makes it look easy. Good catch on the water damage.

I'm surprised at seeing that Miratec Siding - years ago we thought it was the cat's ass and would throw a chunk in the water and it wouldn't absorb water even after two weeks of soaking. The problem with THAT corner where the window is, is that your upper-story downspout is not draining (diverting) directly (elbowed) into the lower-story gutter - so any excess, especially in torrential downpours - overwhelms the lower gutter (especially if your gutters need cleaning and are clogged or slow to drain* - and the most common part of your gutters to clog is at the 1st elbow of any downspout). You're essentially getting 2-stories of roof water on that poor little corner. Another clue you gave was that that side of the house never gets any sun so it never dries out - many times you'll see algae grow on the North side of the houses. . . So those two factors would make that corner a problem that MOST LIKELY the rest of the windows on your lower level will not experience. Oh, and btw, Tyvek rots or disintegrates just as commonly. Love your Content btw. * one more factor in slow draining gutters is improper installation (improperly pitched). This you can check yourself by taking a garden hose up there and see what it does (also checking for drainage) - and take a 6-foot level too as you want at least a 1/4-inch Slope for every 10 feet. Installers get that wrong more that you think.

Brad nails? I remember in a home construction class in high school hand nailing in the siding on a house we worked on. Nailing through siding sucks, it might as well be steel sheeting.
