Star Wars: The Bad Batch is off to a strong start with a two-part premiere that further builds a bridge between the Clone Wars and Andor. In this video we talk about Dooku's loot, how it connects to the Clone Wars, sequel trilogy, and how this whole series is leading up to explaining the "somehow" in "somehow Palpatine returned."

So stoked to be back on this season, because I think this show is going to be an important bridge between the prequel trilogy and shows like Andor and Obi-wan Kenobi. Also, I felt like the first season ignored some of the Batch members, like Tech and Echo, so it's nice to see them get some attention in these first two episodes. Let me know what you thought of the episode in the comments, and now let’s get into this breakdown.
erent meanings. Most obviously, spoils of war refer to any prize the winner of a war can claim. For instance, after world war I, the allied powers imposed massive reparations on the central powers. Or, when the barbarians sacked Rome they carried off the gold and riches of that city, and so on.
So in this episode, the Empire, formerly the Republic, has recently defeated the separatists in the clone wars, so they’re lotting their planets for everything they can get. The thing is, the clone wars series gave us a much more nuanced view of the separatists. The movies only showed us the greedy guilds that were the power behind the movement. But the series showed us the planet Raxus, where ordinary people saw the confederacy as a chance to obtain greater freedom than the republic offered.
Doug: Ohhh, I might have to make a grievous was right video!
Hell yeah, high five.
Last season the bad batch even traveled to Raxus and defended their former enemies-and that character growth is continuing in these first two episodes.
The other meaning of Spoils of War is a bit more literal-war has literally spoiled the planet of serrano.
Doug: yeah, what is this stuff about Dooku being like a king or something? I thought he was a Jedi.
Okay, so all of that is explained in the audio novel Dooku: Jedi Lost, but let’s give you a quick summary. We also went over this in our tales of the Jedi easter egg videos, if you want to check that one out. So Dooku was born into royalty on planet Serrano.
Doug: The guy who worships Jobu? [clip]
No, no that’s Pedro Serrano from major league, this is planet Serrano. So Dooku was born into this royal family, but when he was a kid and they discovered he was force sensitive, his dad wanted him taken away because he didn't trust the Jedi voodoo magic. Dooku became a distinguished Jedi, while his brother Count Ramil ruled over the planet. Very long story short, Dooku became disillusioned by the Jedi order, like we saw in tales of the Jedi. Dooku’s brother became like crazy evil and abused the people of the planet. So Dooku was forced to kill his brother, making him the new count of serrano.
He decided to serve his people instead of the Jedi order, so he resigned from the order. But, he remained on good terms with the Jedi, still visiting the temple, which is why he was there during the events of the phantom menace like we saw in tales of the Jedi [clip]. And of course, he turns evil, joins Sidious, funds the confederacy, etc.

I think Cpt Wilco's name is also referencing the military radio callout wilco, short for "will comply". He's a clone who's still serving under the empire, despite other regs having already questioned their actions. The fact that he refuses to falsify an official report reinforces this strict compliance (to procedure).

Wilco is essentially short for Will Comply particularly when speaking over military radio channels. It foreshadows that he will follow orders even when the Empire orders him not to. Even when it means Rampart will kill him. Its a great name that is right up there with Ima-Gun Di.

I really liked the first 2 episodes. We got a nice history lesson on count Dooku and soreno, and I feel like it neatly covers the rest of the important things to know about Dooku that were never explicitly talked about on screen before; a great pairing to the backstory that was covered in tales of the jedi. And it also doesn't feel forced or out of place, because naturally Dooku's huge wealth would be a primary target for the empire to collect after winning the war, and for pirates to go after. And as mentioned in the video I also like that we get some good character moments from echo, tech, and omega of course. When there's a large number of episodes each season, I don't think it makes sense to push the overarching plot forward every episode, because you'd quickly run out of story to tell (there's only so much they can actually do against the empire 18 years before ANH). So I think it's important to slow down and take the time to create the motivation that the characters need to drive the overall story forward while going on these smaller sub-stories about other topics. That's what these first 2 episodes do with these character moments, especially with echo stating his thoughts out loud. And remember, although it's obviously serialised, it's clearly intended to be somewhat episodic, much like the clone wars and rebels, where most of the time you can watch any individual arc and get a whole complete story. So I think some people need to give it some slack when they go off on a new mission most episodes - that's part of the structure of the show. You'll get your big overarching story points, just be patient.

The clone pilot helmet may not be a 327th Legion helmet. Some clone pilots did have markings matching the color of their legion, but "generic" gunship pilots in TCW occasionally had similar yellow markings (while fighter pilots were usually entirely unpainted)

“Reg” is not how clones refer to each other, it’s what Clone Force 99 (and presumably other special clones - ARC Troopers, Commandos) call the “regular” Troopers. It starts in the first episode of Season One when Hunter tells Tech and Echo to “go talk to the Reg Captain” about why they attached their Jedi master when Order 66 was issued. Tech also states that Echo is a “reg,” which makes Omega the fifth of the remaining five special clones.

I think that Wilco was a good character, but I see his last scene differently - he didn't want to falsify the report not because he follows the law to the letter, but because of loyalty. Wilco's loyal to the Empire and he won't betray it (as he saw and knew that BB is a real danger for the imperial intrests) just for some shitbag of a officer not to get in trouble, because he messed up. As we saw in CW, clones don't have a problem with breaking the rules when necessery but they can't stand treason, especially when that's for selfish reasons (like Krell, or that clone trooper from early seasones that was spying for separatists because he wanted to desert and get some money). In conclusion: I think that Wilco would never falsify such important report neither for the Empire nor for the Republic.

Wilco is an aviation communications term, a contraction of "Will comply" to indicate that a radio instruction will be followed (akin to "Roger" which means "understood"). "Roger wilco" isn't standard communications terminology, but was often heard in old movies to mean "understood, will comply" to acknowledge a radio message.

I don't think Echo is resentful or jealous of Omega, I think we're like this because of Omega it means we helped her cos she needed help and we should continue to fight to help other people.

it is a mando style helmet, but its a clone helmet that looks like a mando helmet-and the clone helmet is a shuttle pilot helmet, they all have yellow on it, not down right from 327

That Old yeller joke reminds me how I watch the movie blow. I get up to the point where they're all having a pool party in their mansion still selling weed having fun and then I shut it off.

As far as I remember Clone Troopers don't call each other Regs, the Bad Batch call them that because to them they are "regular" troopers.

If Tech can actually walk with a broken femur, then he is the ultimate UberChad. Femur are the hardest bone to break and hurts the worst.

The clone pilot helmet is not from the 327th legion, pilot helmets had yellow as the standard. Also, in canon the 187th legion have maroon markings, not purple (as you can tell at 5:22).

Captian Wilco got a name. Does the fact that he has a name give him some plot armor? Will we see him again?

12:09 That and the phrase "Roger Wilco" by pilots or the actual game Space quest with a character by that name. (Roger Wilco) Funny enough there are a lot of star wars references in it, like Gonks, and a Vader name drop.

I wouldn't say this is an easter egg because i'm not really sure what qualifies as an easter egg, but Tech being injured in this premiere makes him the final member of the bad Batch to be injured (not fatally) in the show. I'm not counting the injuries from the training exercise because Tech was winded and Wrecker got shot in the armor by the look of it. Wrecker gets shot by Crosshair. Hunter gets shot by Cad Bane Echo (got blown up so I think he's excused from this XD) Omega hurts her ankle escaping from Cad Bane and Fennac Shand (not serious but enough that she was limping) And Tech gets a broken leg from a crate falling. Somehow I think it's rather fitting for Tech to be injured in an accident and not by doing something reckless like running out in front of enemies with guns without ducking.

Wilco is also a military and radio brevity code for will comply. So the fact that the clone commander Wilco is trained to follow and comply orders than stepping out to not comply is a big deal
