Cameron and Forman goes through the trouble of telling newborn parents some bad news.

Season 1 Episode 4 "Maternity"
After overhearing a conversation about a sick baby, House investigates the maternity ward and predicts an epidemic. After realizing the severity of the disease, Cuddy quarantines the maternity ward. In an effort to discover the source of the epidemic, House begins treating the children. However, when the kidneys of two of the children shut down, House is forced to test which drug caused the failure, resulting in one of the babies dying. Following an autopsy, the team discovers the presence of echovirus 11, CMV, and parvovirus B19 antibodies. They test the mothers and decide the cause of the epidemic is the Echovirus. Using an experimental anti-virus, they successfully cure the remaining babies. House, determined to find the entry point of the virus, finds an elderly hospital volunteer coughing and wiping her nose as she pushes around a cart of baby toys and blankets and makes the connection.

To be honest I would much rather be given the terrible news at face value to prepare for it than to be given false hope than have it stripped away. This doctor thinks she’s giving her patients mercy, but in reality she’s just making the job easier on herself and making her patients go through an even crueler emotional ringer

This is a no-no in nursing. The only thing we can tell patients are irrefutable facts, or possibilities. Saying “everything’s gonna be alright” is a taboo, simply because it risks destroying patient-medical professional trust.

Exactly, far better to be upfront with them and give them no false hope in case the worst does happen, then it's less painful, however slight that may be since a child dying is still painful whatever happens. If the child survives, then it's an elated moment snatched from the brink of death, that much more precious a gift. Instead, Cameron here puts them at ease and gives them no sense that their baby is in very real danger of dying., so as Wilson says, if the baby does dye it's like suddenly pushing them off a cliff, they're blindsided because they never saw it coming.

"if their baby dies tomorrow they arent gonna care what i said to them" oh i think they will, my step brother was in a car accident when i was younger guy treated me like he knew me since i was born even though he was already an adult with his own family when i was a kid the doctor said he could be fine even though he knew a metal rod had gone through his lung...he died in surgery so yeah people do care what doctors say, cause god knows i wanted to rip that doctor's throat out for giving us "wishful thinking" instead of the facts would i have been depressed if he said "your brother's probably gonna die"? of course!! would it have been better than saying "he might be fine, we're doing our best" absolutely!!

Cameron really thought she knew better about giving the bad news better than Wilson. Just because her husband died. It's worse. There's an episode where House says to Cameron "You're like my father" and he wasn't wrong.

Sorry Cameron, everyone else is right on this one. It does matter what you say. If you don't let people prepare they can be traumatized for the rest of their lives. Giving them time to prepare for the worst helps everyone except the doctor (in cases where the parents yell/scream/curse at you, etc), and if the baby comes out alright, then they will treasure their child and the doctors who saved the child that much more. Being in this position must suck :/

I hated Cameron because she was over dramatic and just so over bearing. She had a crush on house and that was the only reason she ever listened to him. Slow buildup to trauma is always better than one boom 'he is dead'. If the child lives great. Doctors need to tell truth

Those few hours of hope absolutely can translate to a pain a thousandfold sharper than one that was tempered and presented to them rather than thrusted upon them. This kind of delivery of information should absolutely result in termination.

Exactly. You can deliver bad news without having to be cold or heartless. In this case a better idea would be to explain that there is a high likelyhood their baby won't survive, they'll do everything they can but the parents should prepare themselves for the worst. Even if you (the doctor) know that the likelyhood is closer to definite at least you've given them time to process.

Sometimes people won't believe logic and reasoning on emotional subjects, until they see the effects of their beliefs in action. We're all emotional beings, we're not completely logical and letting her try her way once, and then making her tell the parents afterwards is bad for the parents in the story, but better to let her learn it once, than to let her continue to not fully inform thousands of future paitents. ❤

This also should have touched more on the deathphobic nature of American society. Doctors literally cannot stomach saying "you're dying" and it confuses patients. Doctors should be able to kindly but bluntly say the word. Cameron brilliantly illustrates this inability.

Cameron really was the worst. Chase and Foreman made a couple of really bad mistakes, killed one or two patients. But they took risks and had specific areas where they excelled at. Cameron's whole personality revolved around her being really nice and ethical, not so much a brilliant doctor.

@Leonardo Di Kennedy Unfortunately as you say often people choose to see what they want to see. They prefer a beautiful lie than an ugly truth but I still believe that you need to tell someone the truth even if that someone is gonna hate you for it

@Leonardo Di Kennedy Especially then. If it is your significant other then it means you must trust each other and trust is not only about happiness but it is also (and especially) about sorrow. I would never wish for my significant other to hide the truth from me. If that person knew something terrible and yet didn't tell me then I would feel he doesn't trust me wholeheartedly. I'd say it is even more important to tell your significant other the whole truth

If the Oncologist tells you that you broke bad news wrong, you did it wrong. Cameron thinks she’s helping the parents it she’s only helping herself. They need to hope for the best, but they also need to expect the worst. She hurt them way worse by not being forthright from the beginning.

I always felt weird about Cameron's view here about watching people die. Yeah, she has a point that it can be hard to watch. But with the case of her first husband, she knew what she was getting into. He was terminal, and she married him to sooth her martyr complex, it wasn't like he sprung it on her all of a sudden. She can't complain how hard it was when she did it to herself, she chose to marry a terminally ill man.

Oh boy... If you knew what MRI machines REALLY sounded like.. You'd have night terrors, wake up in a cold sweat screaming, and then pray for just the nightmares to come back.. Lol the fuckin things are vicious.. Imagine being shrunk down to tiny size, given hearing that's 100 times more powerful than the average humans, and then being trapped inside an old school dial up modem.

This is some of the toughest stuff for me to watch....I will never forget that sick feeling in my stomach when the doctor at two weeks of age told us our son had heart issues. Nothing can compare.

When the nurse wouldn't let me speak with my wife about our twins I knew, but I hoped, it wasn't as bad as I feared. I only got 15 minutes of reprieve while driving until my wife told me they were both gone. Hope does die.

True that too is important however giving false hope for the sakes of bright side is not the best move either. One must be prepared for the worst. I for ecample wouldn't want these "few hours of hope" if I didn't know the worst case scenario and I would hate if someone didn't tell me the whole truth just to give me hope. One has the right to know. Of course not all people react to bad news the same way but I believe it is better to tell the whole terrible truth than half good truth.

It’s 100% matters that you don’t give people false hope. My partner is in the icu. They gave me false hope that he was doing great then boom he had to be sedated again. I couldn’t get out of bed and my mom had to come get me and my daughter.

In med school we learn about good antibiotic stewardship. Basically it’s this mind blowing scary race where bacteria evolve and mutate and our drug regimens become less likely to cover the newer strains of bacteria. So for now it’s MRSA but I can’t imagine what’s next 😬

I’m not a religious person but when my sister was pregnant with my niblings I prayed that the pregnancy would go smoothly and both babies would be happy and healthy. My niece is now 3 years old and my nephew is one, both are cheeky little adorable mischief makers who are adored by my family and are happy and healthy

This show could never be made today. If it gets rebooted, they will W O K E the heck out of it. (Actually, they started down that road in Season 8). I recently rewatched this series on a channel in Canada and at the beginning of almost every episode they had a warning stating, View Discretion Is Advised. Season 7 had most of these warnings. Season 8 had only three...because S8 was a toned down P O S.
