John Henry Giles (Harry Lennix), a legendary jazz musician with ALS, is brought in to be treated by Foreman for pneumonia. House's attempt to prove that he doesn't really have ALS causes John Henry to suffer respiratory failure. House intubates him in violation of his DNR and tries to keep him on life support using a legal technicality. Cameron notices a blood clot, which is removed, and MRI reveals an Arteriovenous malformation which is operated on restoring his ability to walk. Meanwhile, Foreman receives a lucrative job offer from John Henry's doctor, his former mentor.

That was such a stupid answer. Trivializing and downplaying the fact that we all have different experiences and experience the same ones differently as well. There are people who are barely able to hold on, and there are people who live happy and carelessly without a worry in the world. You can't just say "don't we all feel pain", smh. That's not how life works. That's like telling House, a cripple, to stop being a pansy and run like a man cause everybody gets tired but they run anyway. I mean wtf? Sorry for going out on a limb here but as a survivor of (thankfully now past) chronic depression (talking about a decade of absolute hell) that really rubbed me the wrong way, especially since people can be assholes IRL just like this. The worst part is, this wasn't even malevolent or patronizing, he literally thought there's nothing wrong with his statement. Everybody is so convinced that they're right and that they have it the worst. And since they can't walk in your shoes there's no arguing them... That's a bit tragic.

I remember this episode. It was awesome. Looking back at it, I can understand House's point of view when it comes to his doctors, so it makes sense to be brutally honest to them instead of sugarcoating things. If you screw up, and someone just glosses over that fact it doesn't help as you feel it is ok if it's only once or twice, but with House he wants you to know that you screwed up that's not ok. There's no rewind if your patient dies or you cause irreparable harm to them, but he praises you when you deserve it and that's when you feel accomplished.

@@tanujkumar1576 yeah, I like the last half seasons but, if you think about it, it looked like a spin-off of the first seasons. The first three (the original team) made you empathize with the patient story and it was very cathartic when they made the diagnosis. I mean, this episode and the other one of the 3rd season where they cured another paralysed man (Dx Addison disease) made you feel really good about him. Since 4th season, the diagnosis was just "well, that's it, House diagnosed. I learn a new rare disease". Even the clinic duties was really good and creative and it was lost in the last seasons.

I’m with House on this one. If something is my fault, I know it is. I don’t feel better if someone tells me it isn’t; that just makes me think they’re too dumb to figure out the truth, or too willing to be dishonest. Likewise, if I did something brilliant, congratulations doesn’t really mean anything to me - although I’ve learned that it means a lot to others to both receive and to give it so I tolerate it for their sake. What I actually appreciate are other people who also can see *why* it was brilliant.

You misunderstood him. It's not that a doctor shouldn't sleep well when he makes a mistake, it's that he should acknowledge the mistake. "It isn't your fault" js wrong. "You fucked up, it happens, learn from it" is what should be
@hadracks

Maybe, maybe not. Doctor's make dozens of decisions every day and if they lost sleep over every bad decision they would be worse the next day and make even worse decisions. You can learn without making yourself feel terrible.

@@COTC_Community it's not. I've been seeing my father as a doctor all my life. I've seen him predict heartattacks , essentially saving people . but there were times he predicted death too. and that happens as well. by now he's been a doctor for more than 30 years and it all still makes him lose sleep. and if it's someone like house... well, you lose more people than you save . that's gotta have a psychological effect

House was very right in his monologue. His style practice is the classic case of giving to charity to look good vs caring about the cause - he doesn’t really care about the patient and their wellbeing, he only cares about finding out what’s wrong with them. Whether it’s curable or not, he will 100% find out what’s wrong with you and give you an answer, even if it’s not about saving your life and making you happy. For most doctors, caring about people would outweigh their pure curiosity for the unknown, but House has been through a lot.
