@@strobeynot fair to make that assessment from that one time, a long time ago… being in bands is really hard. Especially hard at that level, musicians with so much skill, talent, drive and dedication to their passion, having some notoriety, but still fighting hard to stand on firm ground with your career. Trying to keep a record deal, which in itself is a nauseating thought of how much the business sucks… Members having falling outs, not to mention their own personal issues, which start affecting the livelihoods of your band mates as well. Feeling get hurt, people say shit… anyway, I could on and on, but I won’t. If you’ve been there, or still there, you can totally understand where I’m coming from.

I went to that show too and it is one of (if not the) best shows I have ever seen! Tesla was the headliner in Detroit (Palace of Auburn Hills), they were at the top of their game and great as always. Great White was at their pinnacle and put on a great show. Badlands opened and were amazing. They set the bar high and the others had to pull out all the stops to compete! An aside to how great the music scene was back then was that Mr. Big was playing at a rock bar (Ritz in Roseville, MI) the same night as this show. We considered going after the concert, but did not.

Although Badlands created only 3 albums, they remain my second favorite band, only behind the almighty Zeppelin. I was introduced to Greg Chaisson by my guitar salesman friend at Scottsdale (Arizona) Guitar Center. He told me about the third album, Dusk. It took a few listens for it to grow on me but now I think it’s better than Voodoo Highway. After a couple more conversations with Greg at Guitar Center, I was invited to his home and he shared with me, the stories behind most of the songs on Dusk. BTW this third album was mixed much better in that, Greg’s bass playing is more prominent and it absolutely Rocks. This band deserved MUCH more recognition, respect and success than they got.

Paul O’ Neil was also the producer of Savatage and Omen’s Escape to Nowhere album from 1988. The latter of which was a shit show for the most part save for a few songs (The album opener “It’s Not Easy” most notably). He did manage to revive Savatage’s career though after the commercial failure of their Fight For The Rock album in 1986. He produced their 87’ comeback album Hall of the Mountain King which should have been HUGE in the US but never even went gold.
